What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The “notcomp.com” case was most consistent with Microsoft Edge browser notifications that had been allowed by a user—not proof that Windows 10 contained a virus or Trojan. Remove the site’s notification permission first, then scan the computer and investigate further only if symptoms or security findings remain.
What the pop-up probably is
Several different alerts can appear in Windows’ lower-right corner, and they do not have the same cause:
- Browser push notification: It usually shows a browser name or icon, may mention a website, and can continue after the original tab is closed because the browser is still running in the background.
- Windows Security notification: It comes from Windows Security or Microsoft Defender and can be verified by opening Windows Security directly and checking Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
- Web-page pop-up: It is contained inside a browser tab and normally disappears when that tab or browser closes.
- Installed-app or adware notification: A third-party program, extension, startup item, or scheduled task may be generating it.
A message naming an unfamiliar domain such as notcomp.com, demanding a phone call, claiming a subscription expired, or instructing you to install a “cleaner” is suspicious. Do not click it simply to find out more.
What happened in the original notcomp.com case
The BleepingComputer thread began on April 29, 2022. Its submitted log described Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2, build 19044.1682, with Microsoft Edge as the default browser. The log contained an Edge permission entry labeled Edge Notifications: Profile 1 -> hxxps://notcomp.com. The helper’s FRST fix removed that notification entry, and the topic starter later said a family member had enabled Edge notifications.

That evidence applies to that computer. It does not establish that every alert from the domain, or every similar-looking notification, is caused by the same mechanism. The case is documented at BleepingComputer.
Do this before investigating
- Do not click the advertisement, call its number, or grant remote access.
- Do not download an antivirus, cleaner, browser extension, or support tool offered by the alert.
- Close the browser. If it will not close, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the browser in Task Manager, and choose End task.
- Revoke the website’s notification permission.
- Run a legitimate security scan. If you entered credentials or payment information, protect those accounts as described below.
Remove the notification in Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more (…).
- Choose Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.
- Select Notifications.
- Under Allow, locate the unfamiliar site.
- Open the three-dot menu beside it and choose Remove or Block.
Edge labels can differ by release, language, or organization policy. You can go directly to edge://settings/content/notifications and inspect the Allow list. Removing permission stops that site from sending browser notifications; it does not delete an installed program or prove that credentials are safe.
If Edge does not list the site
Check every browser installed on the computer. Chrome and Firefox have equivalent site-notification permission lists in their privacy or site-settings pages. Also:

- Consider a browser reset only after noting that it can remove extensions, preferences, and site data.
If notifications continue, possibilities include another allowed website, browser synchronization, a malicious extension, a potentially unwanted application (PUA), a startup task, or a web page being reopened by another process. Scan before manually deleting registry keys or scheduled tasks.

Scan Windows safely
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection and install any available security-intelligence updates.
- Choose Scan options > Full scan.
- If the behavior persists, save your work and run Microsoft Defender Offline scan; it restarts Windows and scans outside the normal session.
- After restarting, review Protection history and apply the recommended action.
Microsoft distinguishes PUAs from malware, although PUAs can show unexpected advertising or install additional unwanted software. Microsoft’s guidance is available at Protect your PC from unwanted software.
On Windows 10, PUA controls are under Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection settings. Enable blocking for apps and downloads where available. Download blocking specifically applies to Microsoft Edge; app blocking can detect a PUA that is already downloaded or installed. See Microsoft’s potentially unwanted applications guidance and its explanation of default PUA blocking.

When notification cleanup is not enough
Seek deeper remediation if alerts return after permissions are removed, the home page or search engine changes without consent, searches redirect, new programs or extensions appear, security software cannot update, unknown remote-access software is installed, or Defender reports an actual detection. A downloaded crack, key generator, unsolicited support tool, or entered one-time code raises the risk substantially.
For a suspected active compromise, disconnect the computer from sensitive accounts or the network as appropriate. From a known-clean device, change passwords, revoke active sessions and tokens, and enable multifactor authentication. Contact banks or payment providers if financial details were exposed. Professional malware-removal help or a clean Windows installation may be appropriate for high-confidence recovery.

Should you use FRST?
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is an expert diagnostic tool. A trained helper creates a machine-specific fixlist.txt, often after making a restore point, and reviews the resulting Fixlog.txt. The historical case used FRST to remove the Edge entry and perform other tailored actions; that does not make its script suitable for general reuse.

- Download FRST only from a reputable, specialist source.
- Create a backup or restore point first and do not run malware-removal scripts without expert review.
- Do not stack multiple real-time antivirus products.
The case also included ipconfig /flushdns and netsh int ip reset. These are optional network-reset troubleshooting commands, not the primary fix for browser notifications.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 continues to run, but Microsoft ended standard free security updates and technical support on October 14, 2025. Where hardware qualifies, Microsoft recommends Windows 11; eligible users who must remain on Windows 10 can review the applicable Consumer Extended Security Updates options. Neither an upgrade nor ESU removes a browser notification permission or cleans malware. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
What to do if you entered information
- Change the exposed password from a clean device and change it anywhere it was reused.
- Revoke active sessions, recovery methods, and app tokens where the service supports it.
- Contact your bank or card issuer immediately if payment details were supplied.
- Never disclose passwords, payment details, recovery codes, or multifactor-authentication codes to a pop-up caller.
FAQ
Is notcomp.com itself proven to be a virus?
No. The historical evidence shows it as an allowed Edge notification source on one computer. It does not establish that the domain itself, or every alert from it, installed malware.

Can a browser notification appear when the browser window is closed?
Yes. A browser can remain running in the background and deliver notifications after all visible tabs are closed. Removing the site permission stops that delivery.
How can I verify a Microsoft alert?
Open Windows Security from the Start menu, not from the alert, and check Virus & threat protection > Protection history. An unfamiliar website, phone number, or demand for remote access is not a trustworthy verification method.
Do I need to reinstall Windows?
Not for an isolated notification permission. Consider professional help or a clean installation when there is confirmed malware, unauthorized remote access, persistent tampering, or no reliable way to regain confidence in the system.
Is Microsoft Defender enough?
Start with its updated full scan and Offline scan. A reputable second-opinion scanner can be considered when symptoms persist or a detection is found, but installing multiple real-time antivirus products can cause conflicts.
