Getting a Massive Amount of Annoying Pop-Ups? Find the Cause and Stop Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A flood of pop-ups does not automatically mean your device has a virus. The interruptions may be ordinary website advertising, browser notification permission, a bad extension, an unwanted application, or malware. First, avoid the alert itself; then identify which kind of pop-up you are seeing and apply the matching fix.

Never click “your computer is infected,” call a number shown in the alert, pay for a repair, download a cleaner, or grant remote access. Fake alerts use scare tactics and fake close buttons. See the FTC’s malware guidance and Apple’s Safari safety advice.

Identify what is actually popping up

What you see Most likely cause First action
New tabs or windows appear only on one website That site’s pop-ups or aggressive advertising Leave the site and check the browser’s pop-up setting
Alerts appear in the Windows or macOS notification area, sometimes after the browser is closed Website notification permission Revoke that site’s notification permission
Pop-ups occur on unrelated websites Suspicious extension, adware, unwanted app, or malware Disable extensions, remove recent software, and scan
Your homepage or search engine changes, or pages redirect Browser hijacking or unwanted software Remove the cause and reset browser settings if necessary
A message pretends to be Microsoft, Apple, or an antivirus and demands a call, payment, or download Scareware or phishing Do not interact; close the browser with normal system controls
The problem began after a free app, codec, download, or extension Bundled adware or another unwanted program Uninstall the recent item and run a security scan

The FTC lists excessive pop-ups, redirects, changed homepages, new toolbars, slowdowns, and repeated errors as possible malware signs. They are warning signs, not proof by themselves.

Stop the barrage safely right now

  1. Do not click inside the warning. A fake “X” may open another malicious page.
  2. Close the tab or browser window using its normal close control. If the browser asks to restore the previous session, decline and reopen without restoring suspicious tabs.
  3. If the screen seems locked, use Windows’ or macOS’ normal app-closing controls rather than the on-screen instructions.
  4. Do not install a “cleaner” advertised by the pop-up. Obtain security software only by visiting the vendor’s official site yourself.

If you entered a password or payment detail, or allowed remote access, stop banking and other sensitive logins on that device. From a different trusted device, change exposed passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and contact your bank or payment provider about financial information. Report suspected scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Revoke website notification permissions

Notifications are different from pop-up windows. For example, Edge website notifications can appear in Windows’ notification center even after Edge is closed. Blocking ordinary pop-ups will not revoke a permission already granted to a site.

Microsoft Edge on Windows or Mac

  1. Open Edge and select Settings and more.
  2. Go to Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All sites.
  3. Select the suspicious site, find Notifications, and choose Block.

Alternatively, open the site, select the site-information icon to the left of the address, then choose Permissions for this site → Notifications → Block. Microsoft’s instructions are at Manage website notifications in Microsoft Edge.

Google Chrome on desktop

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
  2. Review Notifications and remove or block unfamiliar sites.
  3. Review Pop-ups and redirects and Intrusive ads settings.

Chrome’s complete cleanup guidance covers permissions, unwanted programs, extensions, and reset settings: Remove unwanted ads, pop-ups and malware.

If pop-ups appear on many websites

Remove only extensions you do not trust

  • Remove extensions you do not recognize or that were installed just before the problem began.
  • Be cautious with unknown “free download,” coupon, codec, search-enhancement, or “security” extensions.
  • Restart the browser after removal.
  • If an extension returns, inspect installed desktop software and browser policies. A work- or school-managed device may enforce extensions; do not bypass organizational controls.

Do not delete every extension indiscriminately: password managers, accessibility tools, privacy tools, and workplace extensions may be legitimate.

Uninstall recent or suspicious applications

  • Windows: Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and sort by install date when available.
  • macOS: Check the Applications folder and Safari’s Extensions settings.
  • Remove obvious adware, fake cleaners, toolbars, download managers, or unknown “security” products installed around the time symptoms began.
  • Restart afterward.

Microsoft explains that potentially unwanted applications can display unexpected advertising or install additional software in its PUA guidance. Do not remove a legitimate antivirus merely because it displays normal security notifications; verify its publisher and wording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scan the device

Windows 10 or Windows 11

  1. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection.
  2. Install the latest security intelligence updates.
  3. Run a Quick scan.
  4. If symptoms continue, choose Scan options → Full scan.
  5. For suspected persistent malware, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan when available; the PC restarts to scan outside normal Windows.
  6. Open Protection history and apply the recommended action. A detected potentially unwanted app may remain until you choose to remove or quarantine it.

Windows Security also includes Custom and Offline scans. Its controls are documented by Microsoft at Virus & threat protection. Reputation-based protection is under App & browser control; Smart App Control availability differs by Windows edition, and it is not available in Windows 10. See Microsoft’s App & browser control documentation.

macOS

Update macOS, restart the Mac, inspect Applications for software you do not recognize, and remove unnecessary or suspicious Safari extensions. macOS includes a restart-time tool that removes known malware, but that is not a guarantee against every adware infection. Apple’s guidance is at About pop-up ads and windows in Safari.

Android

Notification and pop-up controls vary by Android version, device manufacturer, browser, and app. Review notification permissions for the browser and suspicious apps, then use that browser’s current site settings. If the issue persists across apps or sites, uninstall recently added software and use the device’s built-in security scan.

Reset the browser only when settings keep changing

Resetting is appropriate when the homepage or search engine repeatedly changes, redirects continue after permissions and extension cleanup, or unknown toolbars return. Record any settings you need first. A reset can change startup pages, search settings, pinned tabs, permissions, and extensions; it does not necessarily remove an unwanted desktop application. Chrome’s reset process is included in Google’s cleanup guidance.

Do not clear every cookie as your first move. That signs you out of websites and may leave notification abuse, a malicious extension, or installed adware untouched.

Prevent the problem from returning

  • Keep the operating system and browser updated.
  • Deny notification permission to unfamiliar sites; allow it only when you understand why you need the alerts.
  • Download software and extensions from official sources and review the publisher before installing.
  • Review installed extensions periodically and remove ones you no longer use.
  • Use an ad blocker if appropriate, understanding that it can break site functions and does not replace malware scanning.
  • Allow pop-ups selectively for trusted banking, payment, medical, government, education, or work sites that genuinely require them. Edge’s legitimate-exception guidance is at Microsoft’s pop-up blocker page; Safari documents site-specific controls at Apple’s Safari settings page.

When to get professional help

Use a device manufacturer, reputable repair shop, or trusted support professional if pop-ups return after cleanup, scans cannot complete, or you granted remote access. Choose the provider independently—not through a phone number or download offered by the alert. Built-in browser and operating-system controls are the appropriate first step; buying a paid product in response to scareware is not.
