Microsoft Edge Resource Controls: How to Limit RAM and Reduce Memory Use

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Edge’s Resource controls lets you set a browser-memory target so Edge has less room to compete with games and other applications. It is not a hard RAM cap: when the target is reached, Edge may sleep or discard tabs, and usage can temporarily exceed the selected value. The benefit is lower browser pressure; the cost can be more reloads and slower tab returns.

What Edge Resource controls does

Resource controls is a manual control for how much memory Edge should try to use. Microsoft introduced it in Edge Beta 125 in May 2024, initially to help reserve memory for PC games. Microsoft’s current description is available at its Resource controls feature page.

When Edge approaches the selected target, it can put more background tabs to sleep or discard their page contents. A discarded tab reloads when you return to it. This can reduce pressure on a low-memory PC, but it may interrupt web apps, forms, document editors, video calls or other sessions that do not preserve state well.

The target is not a guaranteed allocation or process-wide ceiling. Edge says it attempts to stay below the chosen value, but memory shown in Edge can temporarily exceed it. The setting also does not reduce Windows’ total memory use by the same amount; other applications, extensions and system processes continue to consume RAM.

Availability, versions and platform limits

Microsoft’s consumer page warns that availability can vary by device type, market and browser version. The feature was announced before the current enterprise policy matrix: the Microsoft Learn policy page, updated May 22, 2026, lists policy support for Windows Edge version 143 or later. That entry describes administrative-policy support, not a claim that Edge 143 was the feature’s first release.

The same policy documentation lists macOS, Android and iOS as unsupported for the policy. A consumer installation may also differ because of staged interface changes or rollout status. On an organization-managed PC, an administrator can remove access to the control.

How to turn on Resource controls

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more (…) .
  2. Select Settings, then open System and performance.
  3. Find Performance or Manage your performance.
  4. Turn on Resource controls (the label may appear as Enable resource controls).
  5. Choose the memory target and when it should apply. If Edge requests a relaunch, restart the browser.

Microsoft also summarizes the path as Settings > System and performance > Resource controls. Before troubleshooting a missing control, open edge://settings/help, let Edge check for updates, and relaunch after an update is installed.

Choose when the limit applies

  • Only when PC gaming: Edge applies the control while you are gaming, limiting disruption during normal browsing.
  • Always: Edge applies the behavior during ordinary browsing as well. This is more suitable when the whole computer regularly runs short of memory.

How to choose a sensible memory target

Do not begin with the lowest slider value. Set the target high enough for the tabs, extensions, video, web apps and games you actually use, then observe reloads and responsiveness. Microsoft does not publish one universally correct limit, and the available range or increments can change between Edge builds.

Gaming PCs

Use Only when PC gaming when your main goal is to reserve memory for a demanding game. Close unneeded video, chat and web-app tabs before launching it. If tabs you need repeatedly reload, raise the target rather than assuming the lowest value is best.

8 GB Windows laptops

Start conservatively and keep sleeping tabs enabled. Trim unnecessary extensions and background applications, then test your normal video calls, document editing, streaming, banking and password-manager workflows. Frequent reloads indicate that the target is too aggressive; raise it or turn off Always.

16 GB or larger systems

If you have ample RAM, sleeping tabs and extension cleanup may provide a better balance. Resource controls is most useful when you run memory-intensive games, development tools, virtual machines, creative software or dozens of tabs.

How to check whether it is helping

Browser essentials

  1. Select Settings and more (…).
  2. Select Browser essentials.
  3. Review the memory section for Edge’s reported browser usage and, when enabled, the configured target.

Browser essentials can show usage above the selected target; that alone does not prove the feature failed.

Edge and Windows diagnostics

Use Edge’s browser task-management tools, where available, to identify an individual tab, extension or process consuming unusual resources. In Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, choose Processes, and sort by Memory. Task Manager reports separate Edge browser, renderer, GPU, utility and extension processes, so its totals will not necessarily match Browser essentials. It also shows only Windows process usage, not a promise about the Resource controls target.

For general Windows resource advice, see Microsoft’s PC performance guidance.

Resource controls compared with other Edge features

Feature What controls it Main benefit Typical trade-off
Resource controls You select a browser-memory target. Deliberately reserves memory for games or other applications. More sleeping, discarded tabs, reloads or slower switching when the target is low.
Sleeping tabs Edge automatically pauses inactive background tabs. Reduces idle CPU and memory use with relatively low disruption. A sleeping tab may need a moment to reactivate.
Discarded tabs Edge removes page contents under memory pressure. Reclaims more memory than simply pausing a tab. The page must reload, and unsaved state may be lost.
Energy saver Edge reduces power and background activity, including shorter inactive-tab sleep intervals. Longer battery life and lower background use. Browsing can feel less smooth; it is not a manual RAM ceiling.
Performance detector Edge identifies high-resource background tabs and offers actions such as sleeping or closing them. Finds a specific offender instead of constraining the whole browser. Requires you to review and act on individual tabs.
Startup boost Edge keeps limited processes ready to launch faster. Shorter startup time. It is not a RAM cap and retains background processes; see Microsoft’s Startup boost support page.

Windows Task Manager’s Efficiency mode is also separate: Windows applies it to a process or process group when high CPU use is detected, while Edge’s controls operate inside the browser. Microsoft explains these distinctions in its Edge performance features guide.

Troubleshooting Resource controls

The setting is missing

  • Check the Edge build at edge://settings/help and install available updates.
  • Confirm that you are using a supported Windows installation; the current policy matrix does not support macOS, Android or iOS policy deployment.
  • Look for alternate labels such as Manage your performance because the interface can change.
  • On a work or school device, ask whether policy RAMResourceControlsEnabled has been disabled.

A missing toggle can therefore reflect version, platform, management or rollout differences rather than a browser defect.

Tabs reload too often or web apps lose state

The target is probably too low for your workload. Raise it, switch from Always to Only when PC gaming, or turn Resource controls off and retest. Save work before experimenting with a strict target, especially in forms, administration consoles and document editors.

Edge still uses substantial RAM

Check the target in Browser essentials, then inspect Edge processes in Task Manager. A multi-process browser can show significant renderer, GPU, utility and extension memory even when tab sleeping is working. Also inspect other applications: games, virtual machines, Electron apps, sync clients and Windows services can be the larger source of system pressure.

One tab or extension is abnormal

Use Edge’s browser task-management or Performance detector tools to locate the tab or extension. Close the offending page, disable the extension temporarily, and test again. A memory leak in a site or extension is not repaired by Resource controls; the feature only causes more pressure-management actions.

Edge freezes or crashes

Close unnecessary tabs, extensions and applications, then retry with Resource controls disabled or with a higher target. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance covers low-memory recovery. If the whole PC remains short of RAM, investigate Windows processes rather than treating Edge as the sole cause.

For administrators

The Microsoft Learn policy documentation names RAMResourceControlsEnabled as the mandatory policy that controls whether users can access RAM Resource controls. It is documented under Administrative Templates → Microsoft Edge → Performance, with registry location SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge and a REG_DWORD value of the same name. Microsoft also names TotalMemoryLimitMb for setting a specific memory limit.

The current support matrix lists Windows Edge 143 or later for this policy. Validate the current ADMX package and policy page before deployment because support versions and configuration details can change: Microsoft Learn RAM Resource controls policy.

What Resource controls does not do

  • It does not guarantee that Edge never exceeds the selected number.
  • It does not free a fixed number of gigabytes or control non-Edge applications.
  • It does not prevent memory leaks, replace sleeping-tab settings or make every workload faster.
  • It is not a privacy feature and does not stop tracking or data collection. Diagnostic-data choices are documented separately by Microsoft at its Edge diagnostic-data page.

Use Resource controls when you need a deliberate browser-memory target, especially during gaming or on a constrained Windows PC. Prefer sleeping tabs when automatic savings with fewer reloads matter more. If the limit makes Edge disruptive, raise it or disable it and isolate the individual tab, extension or application causing the pressure.
