To spot a counterfeit DualShock 3, check the seller and rear label, compare the controller’s physical details, inspect its LEDs and shell, then test wireless pairing and pressure-sensitive inputs. No single clue proves a controller is fake: Sony warns that counterfeit PS3 wireless controllers can look practically identical to genuine ones. Treat several independent mismatches as a reason to investigate further, not as a definitive verdict.
1. Check the seller, packaging, and rear label together
Start with where the controller came from. Sony advises caution when buying from uncertain sources because the quality, reliability, and safety of counterfeit products are uncertain. A convincing Sony logo or model marking is not proof of authenticity, and a genuine controller may have a worn or replaced label.

Look at the rear label in context: does it sit neatly in its molded area, and does its material and printing seem consistent with a genuine controller of the same region and revision? The specialist PS3 Developer Wiki reference lists a simple paper label, poor alignment, and an extra screw concealed beneath the rear sticker as possible counterfeit clues. These are indicators, not an official Sony authentication checklist; regional and production differences matter.
Packaging can add context, but dated examples should not be treated as universal rules. A 2017 UK guide from the Anti-Counterfeiting Group, in a section attributed to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, noted poor blister-pack finishing, off-color packaging, and spelling errors as warning signs, and contrasted those packs with UK cardboard-box packaging. That is historical UK-specific guidance, not a current worldwide packaging standard.

2. Compare the logo, buttons, seams, and finish
If possible, compare the suspected controller with a known genuine unit of the same color and regional revision. The specialist reference flags several details worth checking together:
- A SONY logo that appears misaligned.
- Face buttons that sit unusually high or have dull-looking colors.
- A central PS button that looks darker than expected.
- Sharp seams on the underside, below the analog sticks.
Wear, lighting, camera quality, repairs, and revision differences can all change how a controller looks. One odd detail is weak evidence; a cluster of mismatches across different areas is more meaningful and should prompt additional checks.

3. Inspect the player LEDs and shell in ordinary light
Check whether the player indicator LEDs appear to protrude from the shell, and whether their flashing light seems to shine through the surrounding plastic. The specialist reference lists both as possible counterfeit clues, but also notes an important exception: genuine red and pink controllers can show light through the shell.
So, light visible through the shell does not by itself mean the controller is fake. Visual inspection has limits: Sony says counterfeit PS3 wireless controllers may be practically identical in appearance to genuine ones.

4. Test pairing and pressure-sensitive inputs
Try ordinary use rather than relying only on appearance. Repeated trouble syncing wirelessly and missing pressure-sensitive button behavior are possible signs that a controller is not equivalent to a genuine DualShock 3. If available, test pressure sensitivity in a game that uses it or with a controller-test utility; one game or tool cannot guarantee authentication.
A failed test can also result from a depleted battery, a controller fault, a console issue, or setup problems. Check the basics and, if possible, repeat the test on another compatible setup before drawing a conclusion.

Sony’s 2012 manual documents the DUALSHOCK 3 model CECHZC2E, compatible with PS3 system software version 2.50 or later, with vibration and motion-sensor functions. That gives a useful baseline for that model documentation, not a claim that every revision or every counterfeit will behave identically. The manual also describes a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery and an A-to-Mini-B USB cable for connection or charging; the cable is not included with the controller.

How to decide what to do with a suspected controller
- Weigh the evidence: Consider seller provenance, the number of independent physical mismatches, and whether expected functions work. A single unusual feature is not a verdict.
- Consider your recourse: If the seller is uncertain or several clues agree, use any available return protection rather than relying on appearance alone.
- Choose knowingly: If you want an original, look for a Sony DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller for PS3 and verify the seller identity, condition, regional model, and return terms. An explicitly third-party controller is not automatically counterfeit just because it is unlicensed.
Sony warns that counterfeit products may be dangerous in some cases, could ignite or explode, and may stop functioning after system software updates. Those cautions concern counterfeit products; they should not be generalized to every third-party controller. The controller is an older product, and current stock or the authenticity of any particular marketplace listing is not established here.
