1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is a smartphone for people who want to keep a device longer and are willing to trade some performance, camera ability and value for repairability. Its strongest case is practical: Fairphone says owners can replace up to 12 parts, and the company lists software support through 2033. It is not the obvious choice for gaming, photography or maximum specifications per dollar.
Some reviewers call it the Fairphone 6 Plus; Fairphone’s official name is Fairphone (Gen. 6+). This review weighs the repair and support proposition against the compromises reported by independent reviewers.

What makes the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) different?
Most phones make repairs a specialist job. Fairphone instead designs the Gen. 6+ around modular parts that owners can replace, including the battery, display, cameras, USB-C port, speaker and earpiece. Fairphone says up to 12 parts are user-replaceable, and identifies a Torx T5 screwdriver as the tool needed for repairs. The company’s product page lists the components and replacement parts.
That changes the ownership proposition: a damaged screen or worn battery need not automatically mean replacing the whole phone. It does not, by itself, establish that every repair will be cheaper than a repair on another model; costs depend on the part, shipping, availability and whether you do the work yourself or pay for service.

How easy and costly is it to repair?

Repair cost estimates are models, not typical-buyer results
Fairphone’s US page gives an illustrative five-year comparison of $1,394 in average industry cost versus $798.85 for Fairphone. These are company estimates, not observed spending by a representative group of owners. They depend on assumptions about the initial purchase, battery degradation, and the incidence of screen and USB-port replacement. Fairphone says its industry repair-cost comparison uses official quotes from three flagship-brand competitors gathered in July 2025; it is not an independent market-wide study.
What does the Gen. 6+ add over the Gen. 6?
The Plus model is primarily a component upgrade. Fairphone’s comparison lists a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor and 12GB of RAM for the Gen. 6+, versus a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and 8GB of RAM for the Gen. 6. The company says the other specifications listed in its comparison are identical.
| Model | Processor | RAM | Displayed Fairphone price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fairphone (Gen. 6+) | Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 | 12GB | €649 in Fairphone’s comparison, accessed in 2026 |
| Fairphone (Gen. 6) | Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 | 8GB | €599 in Fairphone’s comparison, accessed in 2026 |
Fairphone says the Gen. 6+ can deliver up to 24% faster app loading and switching, and up to 20% less system RAM reservation time, compared with its predecessor. These are manufacturer claims, not independent benchmark results. The $649.99 US price displayed on Fairphone’s US page was marked out of stock when accessed on October 9, 2026. TechRadar reported an August 2026 launch in Europe and the US and listed $649.99 / £569. Prices and stock can change, so check the official listing for your country before buying.

How does it perform in everyday use?
The Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and 12GB of RAM are an improvement on the Gen. 6’s components, but that upgrade does not make the phone a performance leader. TechRadar’s review says rivals outperform it in performance and notes that the price premium over the Gen. 6 is difficult to justify for the changes. These are reviewer judgments, not benchmark results presented as a direct, controlled comparison.

For messaging, browsing and ordinary apps, the more relevant question may be whether the phone is responsive enough for your daily use and whether repairability is worth more to you than peak speed. If your priority is demanding games or the strongest performance for the money, the available review evidence points toward comparing other phones first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are the cameras good enough?
The hardware includes a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP front camera. Those numbers describe resolution, not image quality. TechRadar and WIRED both judge the camera experience to be behind competing phones. That makes the Gen. 6+ a less convincing option for buyers who put photography or video quality near the top of their list.

The available reviews do not provide a controlled, same-scene camera test that would support a precise ranking against a specific rival. If camera quality is decisive, compare recent sample photos and video from the models you are considering rather than choosing by megapixel count.
How long does the battery last?
The removable battery is rated at 4,415mAh. Fairphone advertises up to two days of use, while TechRadar reports roughly one day of average use in its review. The former is a manufacturer claim and the latter a reviewer’s experience; neither guarantees the runtime an individual buyer will see. TechRadar also reports 30W wired charging and no wireless or reverse charging.
How long will Fairphone support it?
Fairphone lists software support through 2033 for the Gen. 6+. Its announcement says Android 16 is installed out of the box and promises six OS upgrades. These are distinct claims: the upgrade promise concerns Android versions, while support through 2033 is the stated software-support horizon. Do not treat the end date as a promise of a particular update schedule or infer a security-patch cadence from it.
Fairphone’s software longevity page records an August 2026 release, QREL.16.104.0, with issue fixes, an improved security patch level, mobile-network usability improvements and general UI improvements. One release entry shows that an update was issued; it does not establish the frequency of future updates.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Camera and gaming priorities: TechRadar and WIRED say the camera experience trails competitors, and TechRadar advises gaming-focused buyers to look elsewhere.
- Price versus conventional specifications: TechRadar considers the premium over the Gen. 6 hard to justify given the relatively limited changes. Fairphone’s strengths are repairability and support, not a claim to lead on conventional performance-per-dollar measures.
- Battery expectations: Fairphone’s “up to two days” claim is more optimistic than TechRadar’s report of about a day of average use.
- Build and protection: WIRED describes a plasticky feel and flags the lack of waterproofing. The phone’s stated IP55 rating is not an immersion rating.
- US carrier compatibility: WIRED reports that Verizon is unsupported and notes caveats with other carriers. Compatibility can depend on the exact carrier, market and plan; check with both Fairphone and your carrier before purchase.
Who should buy the Fairphone (Gen. 6+)?
It makes sense if
- You expect to keep a phone for years and value replacing worn or damaged components.
- You are comfortable using a screwdriver for straightforward repairs, or value having a modular design even if you use repair services.
- You prefer the stated software-support horizon and upgrade promise over leading-edge performance.
- You want expandable storage and a replaceable battery.
Compare alternatives first if
- You mainly want high-end gaming performance or the best camera experience for the price.
- You expect wireless charging or need stronger water protection than IP55.
- You are buying in the US and have not confirmed carrier compatibility.
- You are deciding between the Gen. 6 and Gen. 6+: compare the current local price difference with the processor and RAM upgrade, since Fairphone says the other listed specifications are identical.
When comparing it with another phone, weigh more than a headline spec or purchase price: check parts availability and cost, the separate OS-upgrade and security-support promises, comparable camera and performance reviews, battery runtime and charging, and regional network compatibility.
