The Minecraft message “Failed to verify username” means the server could not confirm your account with the game’s authentication service. It usually indicates an expired login session, an authentication outage, a connection or security-software problem, or an account that the server cannot verify—not that your username is banned or already taken.

For a player, close Minecraft and the launcher completely, sign out and back in, and check status.mojang.com before making deeper changes. Server owners should first determine whether one player or every player is affected, then inspect the authentication path and any proxy configuration.

What “failed to verify username” means
When you join a multiplayer server, the server checks that your launcher session belongs to a valid Minecraft account. In an online-authenticated server, that check is part of the connection process. The error appears when the server cannot complete that verification.
The wording is easy to misread. It does not, by itself, say that Mojang or Microsoft has banned your username, that another player has claimed it, or that you need to choose a different name. It says that the server did not receive a verification result it could trust at that moment.

Several different failures can produce the same message. Your launcher may be holding an expired token; the authentication service may be unavailable; a VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus product, or unstable connection may interrupt the check; or the account may not have a purchased Java Edition profile that an online-mode server can validate. On a network that uses a Velocity or BungeeCord proxy, a proxy setting can also break authentication for otherwise valid accounts.
The steps below follow the remedies consistently reported by third-party Minecraft troubleshooting guides. They are practical community guidance rather than a quoted Mojang or Microsoft support procedure. Use the official status page to distinguish a service outage from a problem on your computer or server.

First, determine who is affected
Before changing settings, ask whether the failure is limited to your account or affects the whole server. This single observation often tells you which side of the connection needs attention.

Why the error happens
1. An old or invalid launcher session
Leaving the launcher open for a long time, switching Microsoft accounts, or changing the Microsoft account password can leave the launcher holding a session token that is no longer valid. The game may still open normally, but the server-side check rejects the stale credentials. A complete restart and a fresh sign-in address this class of failure without changing server settings.
2. An authentication outage
Login and session services can become unavailable or fail intermittently. If the service cannot answer verification requests, a correctly configured computer will show the same error as a misconfigured one. A local reinstall cannot repair an outage, so check the service status before spending time on advanced changes.

3. An account the server cannot verify
Public servers normally run with online authentication enabled. They expect a player to connect with a purchased Java Edition account whose profile can be matched by the authentication service. An unofficial or non-premium launcher cannot supply a verifiable purchased profile, so an online-mode server rejects the connection.

4. Network or security-software interference
A VPN or proxy can change the route or identity seen by the authentication service. A restrictive firewall or antivirus product can block the launcher or Java process from reaching the required service. Packet loss and an unstable connection can have the same visible result. These problems may affect one network but disappear when you try another connection.
5. A proxy configuration error
On a network using Velocity or BungeeCord, the proxy normally performs the external authentication and passes the player identity to backend servers. If the proxy mode, forwarding settings, or recent network changes are inconsistent, a backend can report a username-verification failure even though the player’s account is legitimate. This is a server-operator problem rather than something a player can repair by reinstalling the launcher.
Player fix: use this order
Work through these steps in sequence. Stop when the error is resolved; changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to identify.
- Close both the game and the launcher. Quit Minecraft, then exit the launcher itself rather than leaving it minimized in the background. Wait a few seconds and open the launcher again. Start the game and retry the server. This refreshes an in-memory session that may have expired while the launcher was open.
- Sign out and sign back in. In the launcher, open the account or profile menu, choose the sign-out option, close and reopen the launcher if it requests that, and authenticate with the Microsoft account that owns the Java Edition purchase. Select that account explicitly if more than one account is saved. Retry the connection only after the launcher shows the fresh signed-in session.
- Check for an authentication outage. Open status.mojang.com in a browser. If the page reports a Minecraft or account-service incident, wait for service restoration instead of repeatedly changing your installation. A status page that is clear does not prove your computer is healthy, but an active incident explains why many players can fail simultaneously.
- Confirm the account is eligible for the server. Make sure you are using the purchased Java Edition account, not a demo, cracked, or unofficial launcher profile. An online-mode server is designed to reject accounts that cannot be matched to a purchased profile. If you recently switched accounts, sign out again and select the account that actually owns Java Edition.
- Test the network without a VPN or unusual proxy. Temporarily disconnect from a VPN and remove any manually configured proxy used by the launcher or operating system. Restart the router, then try joining again. If possible, test through another trusted connection, such as a phone hotspot. A result that changes with the network points to routing, filtering, or instability rather than a bad username.
- Bring the launcher and Java installation up to date. Install available updates for the Minecraft launcher and the Java runtime used by your installation. Use Java from Oracle’s official site rather than an unknown third-party download when you need to install or replace the runtime. Restart the launcher after updating and test again.
- Test firewall or antivirus interference carefully. Temporarily pause the relevant protection only long enough to make one connection test, and do so on a trusted network. If the error disappears, turn protection back on immediately and create an exception for the Minecraft launcher and the Java process instead of leaving security disabled. If pausing protection changes nothing, restore the original settings and continue troubleshooting.
How to interpret the result
The restart or sign-in fixed it
Your previous launcher session was probably stale or invalid. Keep the launcher session current, especially after changing accounts or a Microsoft password. There is no reason to alter the server’s online-mode setting for a client-side session problem.

The status page showed an incident
Wait for the authentication service to recover and retry later. Local changes cannot make a remote service answer. If the service is reported operational but only one server remains inaccessible, give the server owner the server address, your account name, and the approximate time of each attempt.
A different connection or disabling the VPN fixed it
The original route or tunnel was interfering with the authentication request. Leave the VPN off for Minecraft or choose a route that allows the launcher and Java traffic. If you need the VPN for other work, ask its administrator about Minecraft traffic rather than permanently weakening firewall protection.
Only disabling security software helped
Restore the firewall or antivirus immediately and add a narrow application exception for the launcher and Java. Do not treat a permanently disabled firewall as a solution; it removes protection while leaving the underlying rule unclear.
Nothing on the player checklist changed the result
Ask whether other players can join the same server. If they can, the account or local network remains the likely fault domain. If everyone fails, the owner needs to inspect the server or proxy, and a wider authentication outage is still possible even if the status page has not yet updated.

Server operators should collect two facts before editing configuration: the number of affected players and whether those players can join other servers. Preserve the exact console message and timestamp as you test, because authentication incidents can be intermittent.

When one player is affected
If other players join normally, your server is completing authentication for at least some accounts. Ask the affected player to perform the restart, sign-out/sign-in, account-eligibility, and network checks above. Do not disable online authentication to accommodate one account; that would change the security model for everyone.
Check whether the player is using an unofficial launcher or a non-premium account. An online-mode server cannot validate an account that has no purchased Java Edition profile, so the rejection is expected rather than a server bug.
When everyone is affected
First check status.mojang.com. If no outage is reported, inspect the server host’s outbound connectivity to the authentication and session services, local firewall rules, DNS or routing changes, and any deployment made immediately before the failures began. A host that can accept TCP connections from players may still be unable to reach the external service needed for account verification.

Avoid making broad changes on the live server while an outage is suspected; a rollback of the most recent network or proxy change is safer than unrelated configuration edits.
When a Velocity or BungeeCord proxy is involved
The proxy is the authentication boundary in a proxied network. Verify that the proxy and backend agree on the intended forwarding and authentication arrangement, that the proxy can reach the external services, and that a recent proxy update or configuration change did not leave backends expecting a different identity format. Test one account through the proxy and, where your architecture permits, compare the result with a controlled backend test. Keep backend servers inaccessible from the public internet unless your design explicitly requires otherwise; exposing them to bypass the proxy can create a separate security problem.
Because proxy settings vary by software version and deployment, use the documentation for the exact Velocity or BungeeCord release rather than copying a configuration fragment from an unrelated setup. The important diagnostic question is whether the proxy completes authentication and forwards a consistent verified identity to the backend.
Do not switch off online-mode as a quick fix
Changing a public standalone server to offline authentication may make the message disappear, but it also removes the verification that distinguishes a purchased account from an unverified connection. Guides warn that this allows unpaid or impersonated accounts to join. It is not a repair for an outage, stale client session, blocked connection, or proxy mistake. If an offline network is intentionally required for a private test, isolate it, document the risk, and never present that temporary arrangement as a fix for a public server.

Some troubleshooting guides list hosts-file edits as an advanced option. Treat this as a last-resort diagnostic, not a routine fix. A stale or incorrect entry can redirect authentication traffic, create failures that affect every player on the machine, and survive after the original incident is over. Before touching the file, make a backup, record the original contents, and involve someone who understands the operating system’s name-resolution order. Remove a test entry and restore the backup if the change does not produce a clear, repeatable improvement. Never copy an address from an untrusted forum post simply because it appears to solve the error for someone else.
A practical decision path
Use this compact path when you need to decide what to do next:
- One player, one server: have that player restart, sign in again, confirm the purchased Java account, and test without a VPN.
- One player, every server: focus on the launcher session, account selection, Java/launcher updates, and local firewall or antivirus rules.
- Many players, one server: the owner should inspect outbound authentication access, recent server changes, and the proxy path.
- Many players, many servers: check status.mojang.com before making local or server configuration changes.
- A proxy network fails while a controlled direct test works: investigate proxy authentication and identity forwarding rather than player accounts.
What to record when asking for help
A useful report lets another person separate an account issue from a service or server issue. Include:
- The exact error text and whether it appears in the launcher, game window, or server console.
- Whether one account, several accounts, or every player is affected.
- Whether the same account can join another server.
- The launcher type, Minecraft version, and Java version in use.
- Whether you recently changed Microsoft accounts, changed a password, enabled a VPN, updated security software, or changed server/proxy configuration.
- The approximate UTC time of the failure and whether status.mojang.com showed an incident.
Do not post passwords, access tokens, full authentication logs containing private identifiers, or unredacted account recovery information. Server owners should also avoid publishing proxy credentials or private backend addresses.

Preventing repeat failures
- Close and reopen the launcher after switching accounts or changing a Microsoft password so the next connection starts with a fresh session.
- Keep the launcher and Java runtime maintained from reputable sources, and review firewall exceptions after major updates.
- Document proxy and authentication changes so an outage can be correlated with a deployment instead of guessed at.
- Keep public servers in the intended online-authentication mode and test configuration changes in an isolated environment first.
- When a failure begins suddenly for many players, check the service-status page before editing hosts files, reinstalling Java, or changing account settings.
