Factories already rely on millions of industrial robots, while humanoids remain a much smaller, early-stage category. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) counted 4,664,000 industrial robots in operational use worldwide in 2024. It separately reported about 7,000 full-size humanoids sold globally in 2025—a different measure, and not a count of autonomous factory workers.
What robots are already running factories?
The established factory workforce of robots is mostly specialized industrial machinery, not humanoids. These systems are built around particular production tasks and applications; their scale is best understood through installations during a year and the operational stock in use, rather than by counting humanoid sales.

IFR’s 2025 World Robotics summary reported 542,000 industrial robot installations worldwide in calendar year 2024 and an estimated 4,664,000 industrial robots in operational use at year-end. Installations are the new units deployed during that year; operational stock is the accumulated number estimated to be in use. They are not interchangeable measures.

IFR President Takayuki Ito described 2024 as the second-highest annual installation count on record, only 2% below the all-time high two years earlier.

Where are industrial robots being installed?
Deployment is concentrated in Asia. In 2024, Asia represented 74% of new industrial robot installations, Europe 16%, and the Americas 9%, according to IFR. China alone installed 295,000 units—54% of the global total—and its operational stock exceeded two million.
For a U.S. reference point, IFR reported 34,200 industrial robot installations in the United States in 2024 and an operational stock of 393,700 robots working in U.S. factories. The first figure is that year’s new installations; the second is the estimated stock in use. IFR also notes that the United States imports most robot hardware from Japan and Europe, while domestic system integrators implement automation solutions.

These figures are compiled from data supplied by nearly all industrial robot suppliers, directly or through national robotics associations, across roughly 40 countries. IFR estimates year-end operational stock; the totals are not a physical census of every factory.
Why are humanoids attracting attention?
A humanoid’s human-like body suggests it could work in spaces designed for people, which helps explain its appeal. IFR describes humanoids as intended for human-centric environments and says recent advances have enabled impressive pilot projects. But a familiar shape is not proof of flexible, reliable or independent production work.

IFR’s current humanoid page reports about 7,000 full-size humanoids—defined there as taller than 140 cm—sold globally in 2025. That is a sales figure for a particular category and year. It should not be compared as if it were the same kind of measure as the 2024 operational stock or annual installations of industrial robots.
How mature are humanoids for factory work?
The evidence supports a contrast in maturity, not a claim that humanoids have no factory role. IFR says most current humanoid applications remain specialized and often require human teleoperation. The reported pilots and sales do not establish how many units are running sustained autonomous production, how many hours they operate, or how their productivity and reliability compare with existing factory systems.

For now, the practical distinction is between an established industrial robot base measured in millions of operational units and a newer humanoid category receiving attention for its potential in human-designed environments. A humanoid’s form alone does not establish task flexibility or autonomy; those capabilities need to be demonstrated for the specific system and job.

What comes next for industrial robot adoption?
In 2026, IFR forecast 655,000 industrial robot installations globally in 2026 and 806,000 in 2029. These are forecasts, not observed deployment totals. IFR cited manufacturing relocation, labor shortages, demographic change, AI, machine vision, sensing, easier programming and system integration among the conditions and capability drivers shaping the outlook.

The forecast concerns industrial robots broadly; it is not a prediction of humanoid sales or autonomous humanoid workers. The useful takeaway is that conventional industrial automation remains on a large and growing trajectory even as humanoids draw attention.
