Facebook restored the 2019 “Storm Area 51” event after removing it for an alleged community-standards violation. The platform later characterized the removal as a mistake, according to a contemporaneous report by Futurism. This was a past event-page reversal, not a current announcement or authorization to enter the Nevada installation.
Why Facebook removed the event—and restored it
Mathew Roberts created the Facebook event in 2019. Futurism reported on August 8 that Roberts received a notice saying the event violated Facebook’s community standards. Facebook subsequently restored the page, and a spokesperson described its removal as a “mistake,” as reported by Futurism.

The report does not identify the spokesperson or provide further detail about how the decision was made. The account is of a platform moderation reversal; it offers no evidence of anything involving extraterrestrials.

What “Storm Area 51” meant
The event’s tongue-in-cheek description, quoted by Futurism, was: “Let’s see them aliens.” It called on people to storm the Air Force base in Nevada, but the framing was satirical and meme-oriented—not an authorized visit, a way to gain access, or a credible plan for entering the installation.

Futurism reported in 2019 that more than 2 million Facebook users had joined the event before it was removed. That is a historical figure attributed to Futurism, which linked it to CNET; the original linked report was not independently reviewed for this account. It is not a current membership count.
Was there merchandise?
Futurism said the event description linked to official “Storm Area 51” merchandise. Its 2019 report does not establish whether that store still operates, whether any items currently offered are authorized, or whether a particular listing is genuine. A search for a “Storm Area 51 T-shirt” today should not be taken as proof of official status.
