Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Lock Profile is missing from Facebook, first check the three-dot menu on your profile. If it is not there, review the privacy controls under Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility. Facebook’s available controls can vary by profile type, and the sources available do not establish a definitive current list of eligible countries or a complete eligibility checklist. If your account does not offer the lock, use the individual privacy settings Facebook makes available rather than relying on an unsupported workaround.
Where to look for Lock Profile
- Open your Facebook profile.
- Open the three-dot menu near the profile controls and look for Lock Profile.
- If the option appears, follow Facebook’s on-screen prompts to enable it.
Meta’s 2022 digital-safety guide shows this route through the profile’s three-dot menu and Profile Settings. The labels and placement in that guide are examples, not a guarantee of how the current app or website will look. Meta’s digital-safety guide describes the lock as limiting non-friends’ access to timeline posts and other photos; Facebook’s confirmation message says, “Only your friends can see the photos and posts on your timeline.”

Why the option may be missing
Availability varies
Profile Lock is not available to every account in every location. The sources do not provide a definitive, current country list, so an old list or a third-party eligibility checklist is not a reliable way to determine whether your account should have it.

Profile type and settings can differ
Facebook notes that available privacy settings may vary by profile type. Professional Mode has been mentioned in secondary troubleshooting coverage as a possible factor, but Facebook’s available Help Center information does not establish it as a universal eligibility rule. If you use Professional Mode, you can inspect its current controls in Facebook; turning it off is not a confirmed fix for a missing lock option.

A different interface is not proof of eligibility
App versions and Facebook interfaces can place controls differently. Checking another current Facebook interface or updating the app may help you find a control that has moved, but it cannot be relied on to enable a feature unavailable to your account or region.
Review the privacy controls you can use
Go to Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility. Facebook’s privacy guidance lists separate areas for profile details, how people find and contact you, posts, stories, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. Names or available options may differ depending on profile type. Facebook’s privacy settings guidance explains where to review these controls.
Rank #2
- Set the audience for posts and stories to the group you intend, such as Friends, where that choice is available.
- Review the audience for profile details and followers or public content.
- Check profile and tagging controls, including who can post on your profile and how tagged content is handled.
- Review how people can find and contact you, and use blocking where needed.
These are separate settings, not a guaranteed replica of Profile Lock. Review them individually and check your profile’s public view to see what people who are not your friends can access. Facebook says current profile and cover photos are public, so consider their visibility separately from other photos and profile details. Facebook’s profile and cover photo guidance covers this point.

A locked profile should not be treated as invisible. A 2024 USENIX SOUPS research poster, based on interviews with 21 Bangladeshi Facebook users and not a representative global survey, notes that a locked user can still be found in Facebook search and can still receive messages and friend requests. The feature also does not establish protection against account compromise. The USENIX SOUPS 2024 poster describes these limits.

If search engines still show old information
Changing a Facebook audience setting does not guarantee that an external search engine will remove an already indexed result immediately. Facebook’s troubleshooting guidance says cached search results may remain until the search engine updates or removes them. Facebook’s search-engine troubleshooting guidance explains why results can persist.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Know when people have seen your messages.
- Forward messages or photos to people who weren't in the conversation.
- Search for people and groups to quickly get back to them.
- Turn on location to let people know when you're nearby.
- See who's available on Messenger and who's active on Facebook.
What not to rely on
- Do not assume a VPN, location change, device switch, or account-detail change will make Lock Profile available. These are not established fixes.
- Do not assume updating the app will change regional or account eligibility; it may only help reveal a control that has moved.
- Do not treat manual privacy settings as identical to Profile Lock. They are individual controls and need to be checked separately.
