To share less on Facebook, start at Settings & privacy → Audience and visibility, then review future-post audiences, older posts, discoverability, tags, app access, activity controls, and ad preferences. These settings govern different things: narrowing an audience does not remove information already seen, copied, or retained under Meta’s policies. Menu labels and options can vary by profile, region, app version, and account.
Start with Audience and visibility
Open Settings & privacy → Audience and visibility and work through the controls available for your account. Facebook groups settings here for profile details, posts, stories, Pages, Reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. You can also use Privacy Checkup as a guided review of sharing choices. Exact categories and controls may differ by profile type. See Facebook’s Audience and visibility help page and Privacy Checkup.

Choose who can see future posts, stories, and Reels
Set the audience before publishing, and check each content type rather than assuming one choice controls everything. Facebook lists options such as Public, Friends, and Friends except. Public content may be visible to people who are not on Facebook as well as people who are. Reels have their own default audience for future Reels; review it separately from your post settings. Facebook explains post audiences and Reels audiences in its sharing controls guidance and Reels audience guidance.
A future-post default does not change the audience of older content. Review earlier posts separately if you want to limit who can see them; changing a default only affects what you share going forward.

Limit how people find you and see your friendships
Under How people find and contact you, review the available lookup and contact options, and check Who can see your friends list? Facebook says the Friends section is public by default. Choosing Only me hides your full friends list on your profile, but it cannot control what other people disclose on their own profiles. Mutual friends may still be visible. Control what happens when someone tags you
In Profile and tagging, look for “When you’re tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience of the post if they can’t already see it?” Facebook says the default is Friends. Review the audience you want added, if any. This setting does not replace the original poster’s audience: who can see tagged content depends on that audience as well as your tag-related setting, and the post may appear in places such as Feed or search. Remove app access you no longer trust
Review Apps and Websites and remove apps you no longer use or trust. Pay particular attention to permissions that allow an app to share or publish activity. Facebook says an app with sharing permission may publish to Feed, a timeline, a Page, or a group. Some apps may not show every permission, so not seeing a particular control does not establish that all app-related data flows have stopped. See Facebook’s Apps and Websites help page.
Review activity and advertising controls separately
Audience settings answer who may see Facebook content; they are not the same as controls for activity information and advertising. Review these areas independently:

- Activity Log: Use it to review activity associated with your Facebook account. It is an activity review tool, not a post-audience setting.
- Your activity off Meta technologies: Meta describes this control as a way to view or clear activity information from businesses and organizations you visit outside Meta. See Meta’s off-Meta activity guidance.
- Accounts Center and ad preferences: Accounts Center manages connected experiences and ad preferences across linked accounts. Meta’s United States Regional Privacy Notice, effective May 23, 2025, says partners can provide activity information and directs users to ad settings for partner activity. That notice is US-specific; available legal choices depend on where you live.
These controls address distinct uses of information. Adjusting them does not guarantee that no data is collected or that you will stop seeing ads. Meta’s documentation describes its controls and policies; it is not an independent audit of data practices.

- Open Settings & privacy → Audience and visibility, or use Privacy Checkup to guide a first pass.
- Set the audience you want for future posts, stories, and Reels, checking the Reels default separately.
- Review older posts if you want to narrow the audience for content already published.
- Under How people find and contact you, review discoverability and friends-list visibility.
- Under Profile and tagging, decide whether tagged posts should gain an additional audience.
- Open Apps and Websites and remove access for apps you no longer use or trust.
- Review Activity Log, Your activity off Meta technologies, and Accounts Center as separate activity and ad-control areas.
Facebook’s settings can move or change. Follow the labels currently shown in your account if a path differs.
