To limit who can see your Facebook posts and profile, open Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. Review post audiences, profile and contact details, friend-list visibility, how people can find you, profile tagging, and public-content settings. Then check older posts separately and preview your profile as a non-friend. Facebook’s labels and available options can vary by app version, region, and profile type.
Where are Facebook’s privacy settings?
Start at Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. Facebook groups controls for posts, profile details, discoverability, profile and tagging, and public content in this area. See Facebook’s privacy settings overview. If the exact route or wording differs in your app, look for the closest matching category; menus may vary by platform, version, region, or profile type.

Who can see my Facebook posts?
Choose an audience for future posts
Before sharing, use the audience selector on the post. You can also review the default audience under Audience and visibility > Posts. Options may include Public, Friends, selected people, or Only me, depending on the content and account. A smaller audience limits who can see that post; check the selector on sensitive posts rather than assuming all posts use the same audience.

The default for future posts and the audience of an existing post are separate matters. Changing the default does not, by itself, change every post you have already shared.
Review posts and media you already shared
Open Activity Log and use Manage Activity, where available, to find and manage some posts, photos, and videos you have shared. Review items individually and use the available audience or management controls. Facebook’s guidance on privacy settings covers these controls.

How do I hide my Facebook friends list?
Go to Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you > Who can see your friends list? Facebook says the Friends section is public by default. Choose a narrower audience if you do not want everyone to see the list on your profile. See Facebook’s friends-list visibility guidance.

Who can see my profile details and contact information?
Review Basic information and each contact field separately. Facebook lets you choose an audience for profile information and contact details, so do not assume one profile-wide switch hides every field. Check the audience selector beside each item you want to restrict. Facebook explains how to control who can see information on your profile.
How can I make my profile harder to find?
Under Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you, review who can send you friend requests, whether Facebook can suggest your profile based on your email address or phone number, and whether search engines outside Facebook can link to your profile. These settings affect different routes by which people may find you; choose the narrowest options that fit how you use Facebook. Turning off external search linking does not immediately remove results already indexed or cached. Search engines control when their own results and caches update or disappear.

What happens when someone tags me in a post?
In Audience and visibility > Profile and tagging, find the control for adding people to a post’s audience when you are tagged and they cannot already see it. Facebook lists choices such as Friends, selected friends, or not adding anyone; its guidance says the default is Friends. See Facebook’s tagged-post audience guidance.

This setting controls whether you expand the audience by adding people. It does not replace the original poster’s audience choice: the original post remains subject to the audience selected by the person who shared it.
Can I limit reactions and comments on public profile content?
Review Followers and public content under Audience and visibility. Facebook identifies profile photos and videos, cover photos, featured photos, and basic-information change updates as public profile information. The Followers and public content settings include controls for the audience that can like or comment on public profile information. Set these according to how much public interaction you want.
Are my profile picture and cover photo public?
Facebook says, “Your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so they can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook.” Restricting other profile fields does not make the current versions private. Use View As, where available, to preview your profile from the perspective of someone who is not your friend. This can help you spot details or posts visible to a broader audience. A post or photo hidden from your timeline may still appear elsewhere on Facebook to the audience it was originally shared with, so the preview is not a substitute for reviewing the item’s audience.
Finish with a guided privacy review
After checking individual controls, open Privacy Checkup from Facebook’s privacy tools and follow the prompts to review audiences and sharing choices. Facebook recommends it as a guided review; use Activity Log and individual audience selectors as well when you need to inspect older content.
