Choose the recovery route that fits your situation
Start with the issue you’re actually seeing. A forgotten password, a suspected takeover, and losing access to your recovery email or phone are different cases; using the wrong route can send you in circles.

| You cannot access the linked email or phone | Follow Meta’s recovery instructions for an inaccessible email address or phone number and the options shown for your account. |
| Facebook shows a security-check notice that says to wait | Complete the check and follow the notice. Meta says a 24-hour wait may apply after certain security checks; this is not a standard recovery time for every account. |
If you can receive the password-reset code
Open Facebook’s recovery page, identify your account as prompted, and choose an available email or phone contact to receive a reset code. Use the code in the flow and set a new password. Keep the code private; do not share it with anyone who contacts you claiming to help recover the account.
If no code arrives, check your email spam or junk folder, confirm your phone has signal or internet connectivity, and wait a few minutes before requesting another code. Check that you selected a contact method you can still use. If the reset flow does not recognize the account or the available contact details are no longer reachable, switch to the relevant route in the table rather than repeatedly requesting codes.

If you think your account was hacked
Use facebook.com/hacked rather than treating a suspected takeover as an ordinary forgotten-password case. Meta recommends starting on a device you have used to log into Facebook before. Follow the account-specific prompts; the available steps can depend on what has changed and what Facebook can verify.
Once you regain access, check whether the account’s email address, phone number, password, or other security settings were changed without your permission. Remove unfamiliar changes where Facebook allows, and use a password that you do not reuse on other sites.

If you can’t use the email or phone linked to Facebook
This is a separate recovery situation from a routine password reset. Start with Meta’s official instructions for recovering an account when you cannot access its linked email or phone, then follow the options Facebook presents for your account.

If Facebook tells you to wait after a security check
Meta says a 24-hour wait can apply after completing certain security checks. This applies when Facebook presents that security-check notice; it is not a promise that all account recoveries take 24 hours, nor does it mean every login problem requires a wait. Follow the on-screen instructions and try again when the stated period has passed.

- Login alerts: Review or enable alerts so you can be notified about logins Facebook considers unfamiliar.
- Two-factor authentication: Add a second verification step at login. Keep recovery options current so you can still access the account if you change or lose a device.
- Security key: Facebook lists security-key login as an option. It is an optional physical security method, not an account-recovery tool; check that your devices and Facebook’s current login flow support the key before relying on one.
Also use a unique password and review the account’s contact details and logged-in sessions. If you see an unfamiliar session, use Facebook’s current security controls to end it.
