Install PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or Microsoft’s GitHub releases, then enable only the utilities that solve recurring tasks. Before downloading, confirm that your PC runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1, build 19041) or newer and has a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor.
Check whether your PC meets PowerToys’ requirements
Microsoft’s current installation guidance lists three requirements: Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1/build 19041) or newer, a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor, and the latest stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. The installer bootstrapper installs WebView2 during setup. See Microsoft’s PowerToys installation guide for current requirements and methods.

Check your Windows version and device architecture before choosing a GitHub installer. On Windows, open Settings > System > About to see Windows specifications and system type.
How do I install PowerToys?
Microsoft recommends installing through the Microsoft Store or GitHub releases. If you already use a package manager, WinGet is also a straightforward option. Microsoft describes PowerToys as a set of free, open-source utilities for power users and developers; its repository overview lists more than 30 utilities, a catalog that can change over time.

For GitHub installers, choose the installation scope that matches who will use the app. A per-user installation is available to the current Windows user; a machine-wide installation is available to other users on the computer. Per-user is a reasonable default for most x64 and ARM64 devices. Choose machine-wide when multiple accounts need PowerToys and device policy permits it. Do not rely on a release filename copied from an old guide; select the matching asset on the current release page.
Microsoft also documents Chocolatey and Scoop as community-driven alternatives. They may suit people who already use those package managers, but Microsoft’s recommended routes are the Store and GitHub.

What happens after setup
PowerToys opens an introductory overview after installation. Its Home page in Settings provides controls for individual utilities and their shortcuts. Modules are optional: you do not need to enable the entire collection. If automatic update checking is enabled, PowerToys checks for updates while running; you can also check manually in Settings. The installation documentation describes setup and update options.
Which PowerToys utilities should you use?
Choose utilities by the friction you encounter repeatedly, not by the size of the catalog. Start with one or two, learn their shortcuts or workflows, and add another only when a real task calls for it. You can switch utilities off individually in Settings.

Launcher choice: PowerToys Run or Command Palette
Command Palette is keyboard-first and runs in the background when enabled. Its default activation shortcut is Win+Alt+Space; you can change it in Command Palette settings. Its supported actions include apps, commands, file search, web browsing, and Windows tools. See Microsoft’s Command Palette overview. PowerToys Run is the other launcher option; choose the one whose workflow suits you rather than enabling both by default.
Workspaces: useful, but not a perfect desktop snapshot
Workspaces can launch a saved project arrangement, but it does not guarantee that every app will reopen as a separate, perfectly snapped window. Launching may visibly open apps and then move them; a single-instance app may be repositioned instead of duplicated. Microsoft’s documentation also says Workspaces positioning support does not include Windows snapping capabilities. These details matter if you expect a saved workspace to recreate an exact layout. What to check if a utility does not work in an elevated app
If a feature fails only in an app running as administrator, the target app’s elevation may be the reason. Microsoft documents that PowerToys may also need to run elevated for some operations, including moving elevated windows with FancyZones and certain Keyboard Manager remaps.

- Check whether the target application is running as administrator.
- If PowerToys shows an elevated-process notice, use it to restart PowerToys as administrator for the task that needs it.
- When finished, return to normal use rather than keeping apps elevated without a need.
Microsoft cautions against always running apps elevated because of security risks. See its administrator-mode guidance for elevated-app interactions.
Where to find settings, updates, and diagnostics
General settings include version and update checks, startup and appearance behavior, diagnostic controls, and report generation. Diagnostic data collection can be enabled or disabled there. For current controls, consult Microsoft’s General settings documentation.
