If your Facebook account may have been hacked, start at facebook.com/hacked on a device you have used to log in before. That is Facebook Help Center’s recommended route for a hacked account. Avoid starting from links in unsolicited emails, texts, or social messages.
Start with Facebook’s hacked-account recovery route
Open facebook.com/hacked directly, preferably on a phone, tablet, or computer you have previously used to access Facebook. Facebook’s Help Center gives this specific instruction: “If someone hacked your account, visit www.facebook.com/hacked on a device you’ve used to log into Facebook before.” The recovery page will guide you through the available steps; the exact prompts can vary.

Do not assume that a message claiming to help you recover the account is genuine. Navigate to Facebook yourself rather than following an unsolicited recovery link.

Facebook’s guidance distinguishes these situations, but does not establish that either route will guarantee access. Follow the options shown in Facebook’s official recovery flow.
Allow for a security check and possible wait
Facebook may require a security check during recovery. Its Help Center says that after completing such a check, you may have to wait 24 hours before logging in. This is a possible check-related delay, not a standard recovery time for every account. During the wait, the account may still be visible to friends.

After you regain access, secure the account
Once you can sign in, review Facebook’s security settings and add protections to reduce the risk of another unauthorized login.

Facebook describes options including an authenticator-app code, an SMS code, or a security key. Choose an option you can reliably use.
- Enable login alerts. Alerts can help you notice sign-ins Facebook considers unfamiliar.
- Check the account’s recovery contacts. Make sure the email address and phone number associated with the account are ones you can access.
- Stay alert to phishing. Facebook’s security guidance advises against clicking links or opening attachments unless you can verify both the sender and the content. Treat unexpected messages cautiously, especially while recovering access.
Consider a security key for future sign-ins
A security key is an optional two-factor method, not a way to recover an account that is already compromised. Facebook says the key must be a third-party U2F or FIDO2 key and recommends checking that it works with your browser and device before buying. Facebook also describes authenticator-app and SMS codes; its guidance does not establish one option as universally best.
