Face ID works in landscape on iPhone 13 models and later running iOS 16 or later. Earlier Face ID iPhones support it only in portrait. There is one important exception: Face ID with a Mask works only in portrait on iPhone, even on supported models. Face ID on iPad Pro works in any orientation. Apple’s Face ID compatibility guidance spells out these limits.
If your iPhone meets the requirements, check the Face ID setting for the feature you’re using, clear the TrueDepth camera area, and make sure your face is visible and positioned in front of the camera. Then work through the ten checks below, from simple settings to reset and service.

1. Confirm your iPhone supports Face ID in landscape
Landscape Face ID is available on iPhone 13 models and later when they run iOS 16 or later. Earlier iPhones with Face ID need to be held in portrait for authentication. Apple puts it plainly: “Face ID works in portrait and landscape orientation on iPhone 13 models and later using iOS 16 and later.”

If your iPhone is an earlier model, no setting or reset will add landscape Face ID. Turn the phone upright to use Face ID.

2. Turn off Face ID with a Mask for landscape use
On iPhone, Face ID with a Mask is limited to portrait orientation. If you have it enabled and want to authenticate while the phone is sideways, use portrait instead. Alternatively, turn off the mask option and try again with your face unobstructed; the available Face ID options are in Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
3. Check that Face ID is configured and enabled for the task
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode, enter your passcode if asked, and check that Face ID is set up. Confirm the relevant feature is enabled—for example, the option associated with unlocking the phone or another feature that is failing. An enabled setting for one task does not necessarily mean it is enabled for every task.

4. Clear the TrueDepth camera area
Wipe away smudges around the front camera area and check that a case or screen protector is not covering the TrueDepth camera. Remove an accessory temporarily if you cannot tell whether it is blocking the camera. Apple advises checking for obstructions and smudges; it does not require a particular cleaning product.

Keep your eyes, nose, and mouth visible to the camera. Move anything blocking your face, and avoid placing a mask so high that it covers the area around your eyes. If Face ID works without an obstruction, that obstruction—not landscape orientation—was preventing a clear view.

6. Face the camera from a workable distance
Look toward the TrueDepth camera and hold the phone at a natural selfie or FaceTime distance. Apple recommends holding the device an arm’s length or closer, approximately 10–20 inches from your face. If you are too close, too far away, or not facing the camera, adjust your position and try again.
7. Check rotation lock if the screen will not turn
If the display itself stays upright when you rotate the phone, check the orientation control in Control Center and unlock screen rotation if it is locked. Rotation lock controls whether the screen rotates; it does not make Face ID work in landscape on an unsupported iPhone. See Apple’s instructions for rotating the iPhone screen.

8. Install available iOS updates
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update. For landscape Face ID, your iPhone must be an iPhone 13 model or later and have iOS 16 or later; updating an older model does not remove its portrait-only limitation. Apple also recommends using the latest available iOS when troubleshooting Face ID.
9. Restart the iPhone and enter your passcode
Restart the device, then unlock it once with your passcode before testing Face ID again. Apple recommends restarting as part of its troubleshooting guidance. If Face ID still fails, move to the setup reset rather than repeatedly changing your position or orientation.

10. Reset Face ID, then seek service if setup still fails
Reset and set up Face ID again
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode.
- Tap Reset Face ID.
- Choose the option to set up Face ID and follow the on-screen instructions, keeping your face visible to the camera.
When to contact Apple for service
If the camera is not working or you cannot complete Face ID setup, the device may need service. Apple says the TrueDepth camera should be serviced only by a trained technician. Follow Apple’s Face ID troubleshooting guidance for next steps.
Optional: check attention settings
Face ID is attention-aware. If authentication behaves unexpectedly in more than just landscape, review Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention. Apple documents those controls in its Face ID and attention settings guide; this is a general troubleshooting check, not a landscape-specific fix.
