Proton VPN and NordVPN each document ad filtering as part of a VPN product, but the features differ in platform coverage, plan requirements, and how they handle blocked content. A VPN connection alone does not block ads: the provider must include a filtering feature. The available official documentation does not establish a consistent independent test of blocking effectiveness, so there is no evidence-based performance winner here.
What a VPN ad blocker does—and does not do
A VPN does not automatically block advertisements. Ad filtering is a separate feature that checks network requests against lists of domains associated with ads, trackers, or harmful content. Coverage depends on the provider’s feature and settings; domain filtering should not be taken as a promise to remove every ad.

For example, Proton VPN says NetShield checks DNS requests against databases of domains associated with malware, ads, and trackers, then blocks matching resources. That approach filters at the domain-request level rather than guaranteeing that every advertising element on every page will disappear. Proton’s NetShield documentation also describes limits and settings that vary by platform.
Compare the documented built-in ad-blocking options

What to know about each provider
Proton VPN: NetShield settings and limitations
NetShield offers a malware-only setting and a setting that also filters ads and trackers. Proton says the feature has included subdomains as well as root domains since early 2026. Its support page also states that NetShield does not work with Tor over VPN: in that configuration, Tor nodes handle DNS queries rather than Proton’s DNS service.
Proton’s February 2026 documentation says NetShield is “six times more powerful” at blocking ad, malware, and tracker domains. This is Proton’s own claim about its update, not an independently verified result or a comparison with the other service in this article. Confirm current plan eligibility and the controls available in your version of the app before subscribing.

NordVPN: documented setup is for Windows
NordVPN describes its Ad blocker as blocking ads, third-party trackers, and malicious ads. Its support instructions specifically require an active Plus or Ultimate subscription and the Windows application. Do not assume those instructions establish the same feature controls on mobile, browser extensions, or other operating systems; the cited documentation does not confirm that broader coverage.

How to choose based on your devices and needs
- Choose by the device you actually use. NordVPN’s cited activation guide is specifically for Windows. Proton says NetShield settings vary by platform, so check the controls in your own app.
- Check the required subscription before paying. Proton’s ad-and-tracker filtering requires Plus or Unlimited according to its blog. NordVPN’s documented setup requires Plus or Ultimate.
- Consider what you want filtered. The documented features include different combinations of ads, trackers, malware, and malicious ads. They are domain-based protections, not guarantees that every ad or harmful page element will be removed.
- Look for a recovery option if a site misbehaves. Proton says to turn NetShield off if a resource is blocked in error. NordVPN documents a domain-specific ad allowance.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—establish
The providers’ own documentation is useful for understanding feature behavior, supported platforms, and plan requirements. It does not provide a consistent independent test comparing how many ads or trackers each service blocks under the same conditions. Proton’s “six times more powerful” statement describes Proton’s own update and is not a cross-provider test. No service can be ranked here as the most effective blocker on that evidence alone.
Because feature availability and plan terms can change, check the linked provider documentation and your app’s current settings before choosing. A filtering feature may also block a resource a site needs; use the provider’s documented exception or disable control when that happens.
