It does not decide how an editor should own durable document state, coordinate framework lifecycle, implement undo and redo, or persist application-specific behavior. Those boundaries belong to the application—and diagnosing a particular failure requires details of that application, not just the headline.
What Fabric.js handles—and what it leaves to the application
Fabric.js describes itself as “an abstraction layer on top of the Canvas API.” Its Canvas and StaticCanvas provide object-based drawing and rendering, selection and interaction, stack ordering, viewport handling, serialization, and export. Built-in capabilities include selecting, dragging, scaling, rotating, skewing, and brushing; events can report pointer activity as well as higher-level object changes. Fabric.js’s “Why Fabric.js” documentation and API documentation describe this feature set.

That is more than a thin drawing wrapper, but it is not a complete editor architecture. The application still has to define how its durable document relates to Fabric objects, how UI state stays synchronized with the canvas, where commands and undo history live, and how instances and event subscriptions are created and disposed. There is no single correct arrangement established for every app.

Why is my Fabric.js canvas slow?
Start with the actual workload rather than the object count alone. Fabric.js can cache an object by painting it to an offscreen canvas and reusing that image on the main canvas. This can avoid redrawing complex content during transforms, but cache invalidation, cache dimensions, zoom, and repeated anti-aliasing affect performance and visual quality. The object-caching guide recommends evaluating the behavior in the workload that matters; large caches can take time to refresh, and cached output can look blurry during some transforms.

The guide gives one illustrative figure: 900 simple rectangles took around 4–5 ms to draw on a modern laptop. It presents this as a synthetic comparison, not a general benchmark; the publication year is not stated. Do not use it to predict production performance from object count.
Measure the work your users do
- Check which objects are expensive to redraw and whether caching helps those objects.
- Observe cache refreshes during edits and zoom changes, not only an initial render.
- Check visual quality at the zoom levels and transforms users actually use.
- Measure export separately from interactive rendering, since its quality requirements may differ.
When should you disable Fabric.js object caching?
Consider disabling caching for a high-quality PNG or JPEG export. Fabric.js’s caching guide says that exporting those formats for optimal print quality with caching active is generally a bad idea; it recommends disabling caching for the export and restoring it afterward. Treat that as an export-specific setting, not a blanket rule to disable caching in the interactive editor.

For other cases, decide from measured rendering speed and output quality. Caching can reduce redraw work, but it also introduces invalidation and memory-size tradeoffs. The right choice depends on the objects, transforms, zoom behavior, and export needs of the application.

Does Fabric.js save the whole editor state to JSON?
No. Fabric’s JSON serialization is intended to save and restore the canvas’s visual state. The documentation says application-defined controls and handlers are part of the codebase and are not included in that serialized state. The serialization documentation explains this boundary.

So a JSON canvas representation can be part of an editor’s document format without being the entire application state. An editor may have additional state or behavior that must be managed by its own code. What belongs there, and how it is restored, depends on the editor’s requirements; Fabric’s serialization feature alone does not determine that strategy.
Fabric also supports SVG export, but import and export are not perfectly symmetrical because Canvas and SVG differ, according to the official documentation. If SVG fidelity matters, validate the specific content and transformations your application uses rather than assuming that a round trip will be exact.

How should I manage Fabric.js state in React?
The available documentation does not establish a React-specific state pattern as the right answer for every application. The design question is how the framework’s lifecycle and state model relate to the Fabric canvas and its objects. Make that relationship explicit: decide which layer owns the durable document, how edits become application changes, how event subscriptions are cleaned up, and when canvas instances are created and disposed.
Likewise, undo and redo need semantics defined by the editor. The existence of Fabric objects, events, and serialization does not by itself say whether history should represent commands, snapshots, or another model. Choose based on the behavior the editor must preserve, and keep the model synchronized with the canvas deliberately.

What should you verify before changing architecture?
- State ownership: identify the authoritative durable document and distinguish it from transient selection or interaction state.
- Synchronization: trace how a user edit updates the document and how restored document data reaches the canvas.
- History and persistence: define what undo and redo restore and what data must survive a save-and-load cycle.
- Lifecycle: account for setup and disposal of canvas instances, event handlers, and framework subscriptions.
- Rendering and export: profile representative editing interactions and verify output fidelity independently.
These are diagnostic questions, not evidence that any particular application has a specific defect. Without an application’s code, failure symptoms, and change history, it is not possible to substantiate a claim that its architecture—not Fabric.js—caused an incident.
Which Fabric.js packages should new applications use?
The current repository guidance recommends @fabricjs/browser for new browser applications and @fabricjs/node for Node applications; the fabric package remains as a compatibility facade. It also advises using matching versions for fabric and @fabricjs/* packages, because mismatches can load separate runtimes. Check the Fabric.js repository for the current guidance before choosing packages. At the time covered by the project information here, the homepage displayed version 7.4.0 as the latest release; that release label can change.
