Peter Molyneux says the 2023 reveal trailer for Playground Games’ Fable reboot initially left him “a little bit worried” that it looked too fairytale-like. Later gameplay footage changed his impression: he said he was “very encouraged” by what he saw and is now eager to play the game as a gamer.
What worried Molyneux about the first trailer?
In a PCGamesN interview reported by GamesRadar+ on 6 October 2026, Molyneux described his reaction to the first proper trailer, shown at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase and featuring Richard Ayoade. He said he was “a little bit worried about it, it seemed a little too fairytale-ish.” The concern he described was about the trailer’s tone; he did not say that he rejected the reboot.

Molyneux is the creator of Fable and the former founder and CEO of Lionhead Studios. He said he felt proud that a game he loved being involved with was continuing, and that he had enjoyed watching the new team’s game evolve. Why did later footage encourage him?
GamesRadar+ reports that subsequent gameplay footage from Playground Games left Molyneux “very encouraged.” He said, “They’re keeping a lot of what made Fable different and special.” That is a more specific reason for his improved reaction than simply seeing more of the game: he believes the footage retains qualities that distinguish Fable.

He also said he remained curious about “the alignment system, and how that visually affects the world,” and promised he would be “first in the line to play it.” His comments describe a reaction to footage, not a verdict on the finished game.
Why does he say this will be his first Fable as a gamer?
Molyneux said, “In one way, this version of Fable will be the first Fable I’ve really played as a gamer.” He followed that with: “And that’s going to be absolutely fascinating to play. I can’t wait.” The remark frames his anticipation as personal: he expects to experience this version from a player’s perspective rather than primarily through his involvement in making earlier Fable games.

Molyneux is not identified as part of Playground Games’ development team. The reboot is being developed by Playground Games, with Xbox Game Studios as publisher, according to Xbox’s official US listing.
When is the reboot due, and where will it be available?
Xbox’s US listing gives Fable a release date of 23 February 2027 and says it will be available on day one with Game Pass. It lists Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, along with play options for Xbox PC, supported handhelds and Xbox cloud gaming.
