Petri Alanko says moving CONTROL Resonant beyond The Oldest House gave him a fresh musical starting point: warped Manhattan’s scale could make Dylan Faden feel small and fragile, while the score could trace his path toward becoming irreplaceable. Alanko also said he deliberately avoided redoing Inception, which he felt would be tacky and would diminish Remedy’s own concept.
Why did CONTROL Resonant leave The Oldest House?
For composer Petri Alanko, the shift to the sequel’s nightmarish, Manhattan-like setting was a creative relief, not simply a change of scenery. In remarks reported by TechRadar on October 7, 2026, he said: “It was a great relief that we exited The Oldest House and used the nightmarish Manhattan-like surroundings for the game setting.”

Remedy describes CONTROL Resonant as an action-adventure RPG starring Dylan Faden in a warped Manhattan. The first game centered on Jesse Faden and the strange confines of The Oldest House; the sequel’s broader urban environment gave Alanko a different scale and emotional problem to address. The available comments explain his approach to the sequel’s score, but do not offer a detailed comparison with the first game’s soundtrack.

Did CONTROL Resonant copy Inception?
No. Alanko explicitly said he tried not to recreate the film’s approach. As quoted by TechRadar, he said: “I tried not to re-do Inception. That would’ve been a tad tacky and would have reduced Remedy’s concept to something less worthwhile. I don’t personally believe in replicating or redoing, although in some rare cases an homage is fitting, actually, but such cases are indeed very few.”
#1 Best Overall
That is Alanko’s stated creative position, not evidence that the game is an adaptation of or officially based on Inception. The comparison is useful as context for the setting’s surreal, urban scale; his point was that the music should serve Remedy’s own idea rather than imitate another work.
How does the score make Dylan feel vulnerable?
Alanko said Manhattan’s grandeur helped him frame Dylan’s position within it. “It’s beautiful, epic, majestic even,” he told TechRadar. “There’s so much more to the scenery than just the buildings; it’s about the scale and the feeling, feeling small and replaceable… how would you represent Dylan there so that one felt he’d be irreplaceable? That was the source of the backbone of Dylan-related pieces in the game.”
The tension is central to his description: Dylan begins as someone who can seem insignificant against an immense setting, yet the music needs to suggest that he could become impossible to replace. Alanko said that “accentuating Dylan’s starting point was an origin point for conceptualizing the music and among the first things I did.”
“Tabula Rasa” as an introduction
Alanko described Dylan as “a blank slate, a tabula rasa,” who has “to recover and become first a human, then something else.” He connected that idea to “the descending nature of the harmony of ‘Tabula Rasa’ and the clangorous percussion,” calling the piece “an introduction to Dylan and Hedron, in simple terms, a little like a concert overture.”

He also said the noisy, wavering sounds near the end could suggest breathing again after a coma, for both protagonist and antagonist. In his explanation, that sound world was meant to express Dylan’s fragility: how brittle he was at the beginning, and the distance between that starting point and where he ended up. These are Alanko’s descriptions as published by TechRadar; they are not independently verified against an audio recording or transcript.
