Its 2.0-rc1 beta listing also describes an optional Material You color theme, but that option is not guaranteed to be available in every stable release or on every device. Check the version shown for F-Droid on your own device before looking for it.
What is changing in F-Droid 2.0?
F-Droid’s official announcement calls 2.0 a complete redesign intended to fit current Android patterns while retaining familiar interactions. The announcement says: “The user experience was redesigned to integrate smoothly with current Android patterns, like Material Design, while keeping familiar F-Droid interactions in place.” That describes the project’s goal; it is not an independent usability test or evidence that every user will prefer the new look. The official listing identifies version 2.0-rc1 as a beta added on August 23, 2026, and says the interface was rewritten in Kotlin Compose. The listing also names changes beyond appearance: search includes descriptions and translations, app discovery and filtering are improved, installation approval happens before download, and multiple downloads or updates can run concurrently. These are beta-version details; do not assume they describe the stable client installed on your device. Check the official F-Droid client listing.

Look for the Material You color option in 2.0-rc1
The 2.0-rc1 beta listing describes an optional Material You color theme. If your installed client is the 2.0-rc1 beta, check its settings for a color-theme option. The listing does not establish that the setting appears in every build or device, so its absence does not necessarily mean something is wrong.

Do not expect a complete theme editor
The listing documents a color option, not arbitrary theme packs or controls for replacing icons, layouts, or typography. Changing color may make the interface feel more at home on your device, but it is not a user-controlled redesign of every visual element. The official materials do not establish that Android system settings can change all of F-Droid’s in-app styling.
How to check which version you have
- Open the F-Droid client listing on your device. Find the version label for the installed client and compare it with the official F-Droid listing.
- Check whether your listing identifies a 2.0 build. The documented 2.0-rc1 release is a beta. Availability is not established for every device or region, so rely on the version shown to you rather than assuming the redesign has rolled out to all users.
- If you are using 2.0-rc1, inspect the client’s settings. Look for the optional Material You color theme. If you are on another version and cannot find it, the beta listing does not promise that your build includes it.

Is the launcher icon setting a theme fix?
No. F-Droid’s FAQ describes a calculator launcher-icon setting for client 1.x. It changes the app’s launcher identity; it does not restyle the interface inside F-Droid. See the F-Droid client FAQ.

Why some users call F-Droid ugly
A 2016 F-Droid forum discussion includes requests for a more modern interface and complaints about banner, logo, and icon quality. That is evidence that appearance was discussed in the community at the time, not a measure of current opinion or a basis for saying users broadly dislike the client. The 2.0 redesign gives people who want a different visual treatment something concrete to check, but whether it looks better is a matter of personal preference. Read the 2016 forum discussion.
