A Self-Hosted Alternative to Google Photos, iCloud Photos, and Dropbox: What You Gain—and Manage

A Synology NAS running Synology Photos is one way to keep a photo library outside Google Photos, iCloud Photos, and Dropbox. Synology Photos itself is free, but it requires Synology hardware; you supply the storage, setup, backups, and ongoing care. That can be a better fit if control and avoiding a photo-storage subscription matter more to you than hands-off convenience. It is not automatically cheaper or safer.

What can you use instead of Google Photos, iCloud Photos, or Dropbox?

A self-hosted photo library stores your originals on hardware you manage rather than relying solely on a cloud-storage account. Synology Photos is a documented example: Synology says the service requires a Synology NAS and is free to use, with a one-off hardware investment rather than a subscription tier. See Synology Photos.

This is a practical alternative, not evidence that the author of the headline personally uses Synology or any other particular system. Whether it is “better” depends on what you value: ownership and control, predictable recurring costs, convenience, features, and how much responsibility you are willing to take on.

What Synology Photos offers

Synology’s specifications describe photo browsing and management, search, sharing, uploading, and album workflows. Some features are dependent on the NAS model; face and object recognition, for example, are supported only on certain models. Check the Synology Photos technical specifications for the current compatibility details before choosing hardware.

What you take on when you leave cloud storage

Hardware, costs, and upkeep

With Synology Photos, the software is free, but the required NAS and storage are not. The official material establishes that cost model, not that it will cost less than a cloud plan over time. Your total depends on hardware and storage capacity, electricity, replacement drives, any separate backup destination or service, and the time you spend setting up and maintaining the system. No universal savings or break-even period follows from “no subscription.”

You also become responsible for keeping the device working, managing available capacity, and ensuring that your photos are actually being uploaded. This arrangement suits someone willing to own those tasks; it is less attractive if you want storage to happen with almost no administration.

A NAS is not the same as a backup

Think of the NAS as the primary library unless you have made another independent copy. A failed device, accidental deletion, theft, or another problem affecting the NAS could put the library at risk. Synology describes backing up the NAS to other locations; use that capability to create a separate copy, rather than treating phone-to-NAS upload alone as a complete protection plan. The exact backup destination and schedule depend on your setup.

Will phone uploads work reliably?

Automatic mobile backup is affected by the phone’s operating system and background-app rules, so a self-hosted setup may need more attention than a cloud service that is already integrated into your device.

Synology Photos on iOS

Synology recommends enabling notifications and keeping the phone charging to improve backup efficiency. It also warns that when multiple iOS devices share iCloud storage, delayed syncing between those devices may mean some photos are not backed up to the NAS. These are practical reasons to check the library and upload status rather than assuming that every new image has arrived.

Immich on iOS

Immich is another self-hosted photo-library option, but it has its own mobile constraints. Its documentation says Background App Refresh must be enabled on iOS, and that iOS decides when background jobs run. It describes periodic background uploads and Wi-Fi defaults; those behaviors are not a guarantee of an immediate upload. Consult Immich’s mobile-backup documentation for the current settings and behavior.

How to decide whether self-hosting is a better fit

Consideration Self-hosted library, such as Synology Photos What to weigh against a cloud service
Cost Synology Photos is free, but requires a one-off Synology NAS hardware investment; total costs vary. Compare the subscription you would otherwise pay with hardware, power, storage replacement, backup, and upkeep for your particular setup.
Control You manage the storage device and the library’s backup destinations. More control comes with more responsibility for access, configuration, and recovery.
Backup Phone upload puts a copy on the NAS; a separate, independent copy still needs to be arranged. Check what is backed up, where the second copy lives, and whether recovery is practical.
Mobile uploads Background behavior depends on the app and operating system; Synology documents iOS caveats, and Immich requires iOS Background App Refresh. Consider how much you rely on unattended uploads and how willing you are to check status or troubleshoot delays.
Features and hardware Synology lists browsing, search, sharing, uploads, and albums; recognition depends on NAS model. Check the features you actually use and confirm compatibility before buying hardware.
Migration You need to move or copy existing photos into the new library and verify the result. Account for the time and organization involved in moving a large library; do not cancel an existing service until you have verified your copies.

A safe way to make the switch

  1. Check requirements first. Confirm that your chosen Synology NAS supports the Synology Photos features you want, especially recognition, using Synology’s technical specifications.
  2. Plan storage and a second copy. Decide where the primary library will live and what independent location will hold the backup. Include capacity and ongoing maintenance in your plan.
  3. Set up uploads and test them. Configure the mobile app, then take a test photo and confirm it appears in the library. On iOS, account for Synology’s guidance about notifications, charging, and shared iCloud syncing.
  4. Import existing photos and verify them. Check that the expected files and albums are present before relying on the new library as your sole copy.
  5. Test recovery before ending another service. Confirm that you can retrieve files from the separate backup, not just view them on the NAS. Keep the old service until the new library and backup have both been checked.

Who should choose this approach?

  • A good fit: people who want to manage their own photo storage, are comfortable maintaining hardware, and will keep an independent backup.
  • Probably not a good fit: people who want the least setup and maintenance, expect mobile uploads to happen without checking, or do not want responsibility for backup and recovery.
  • Before spending: compare the complete cost of your intended setup with the recurring service cost you would avoid, and verify that the required apps and hardware support your workflow.
