What the F-35 co-bot does
It helps attach the CNI module’s front housing
The reported job is specific: installing bolts to attach the front housing area of the CNI module, an avionics unit used on the F-35. Northrop Grumman manufacturing manager Lavell Catlin said the co-bot “assists technicians to precisely install bolts” for that assembly. The reporting does not describe the robot building the whole module or taking over the full assembly process.

The reported time saving is for this task
Northrop Grumman reports that bolt installation which previously took hours now takes a few minutes. The reports do not give an exact before-and-after cycle time, explain how the task time was measured, or state how many modules are completed in a shift. The claim therefore describes a substantial reduction in the time for this particular operation, not a quantified change in total F-35 build time.

The co-bot is presented as a tool used alongside technicians, not a lights-out system operating without an assembly team. Northrop Grumman says employees were shifted to other key manufacturing efforts after the task was automated. That indicates a reassignment of work, but the company’s reports do not quantify how many employees changed roles or describe any net workforce change.

How this fits into the wider F-35 factory
The bolt-installation system is one targeted improvement within a larger human-and-machine production setup. Lockheed Martin describes its advanced manufacturing approach as combining robotics, artificial intelligence and augmented reality to improve production speed and quality. Those are broad program-level aims; they are not published performance measurements for this specific co-bot.

The Fastems figures concern forward-fuselage work, not the CNI-module bolt operation. They should not be combined with Northrop Grumman’s hours-to-minutes claim as if they measured the same task or line. Fastems also quotes forward-fuselage lead specialist Brian Sykes describing the team as working “hand in hand with the automation system” to reduce time, increase accuracy and improve safety.

Production context
The U.S. Government Accountability Office says the F-35 program achieved full-rate production in March 2024. The CNI co-bot is therefore best understood as a targeted manufacturing improvement within an established production program, rather than evidence that the aircraft’s overall production system has become fully automated.
What has not been disclosed
The public reports do not identify the Northrop Grumman plant where the co-bot is installed or the robot’s manufacturer and model. They also do not report its purchase price, monthly production gain, change in defect rates, reduction in safety incidents or formal return on investment. Without those details, the reported time saving cannot be converted into a reliable estimate of cost savings or added aircraft output.
