Extraction Shooter Cheating: What Players Need to Know

Extraction shooters make cheating feel costly because a compromised fight can put a run, its loot, and persistent gear at risk. Developer ban counts do not prove the genre has more cheaters.

Cheating can feel especially destructive in an extraction shooter because one compromised fight may cost more than a match: it can take a run, its loot, and progress tied to persistent gear. That does not prove extraction games have more cheaters than other multiplayer genres. The available developer accounts explain the distinctive stakes and describe countermeasures in Hunt: Showdown and Bungie’s Marathon, but do not establish a genre-wide cheating rate.

Why cheating can hit an extraction run harder

Extraction games make information and survival part of the wager. Players enter a run, gather or carry valuable items, and try to leave with them. If an opponent gains an unfair advantage, the loss may reach beyond the immediate fight to the gear or loot attached to that run.

Bungie describes Marathon as a game where players should have a fair chance to exfiltrate with loot, and says acquired gear is an investment worth protecting. Its security discussion connects cheating risks to combat, inventory, player-location information, and the game economy. Those examples help explain why cheating can feel unusually consequential; they do not show that cheating is more prevalent across the genre.

Information can be as valuable as aim

A wall hack, ESP tool, or loot revealer can undermine the uncertainty that gives an extraction run its tension. Bungie says Marathon uses server-side Fog of War to limit what a client knows about player positions, map regions, and loot. The goal is to make information cheats less useful by withholding information the player should not yet have.

Persistent gear raises the stakes

Cheating can also threaten inventory integrity. Bungie says its servers are authoritative over actions and inventory, and that its security work includes protecting progress from item duplication and other economic cheats. That is a specific design approach for Marathon, not a rule shared by every extraction shooter.

Why “a haven for cheaters” is hard to prove

The sources available here do not compare cheating prevalence across extraction shooters and other multiplayer genres. Developer ban totals cannot fill that gap: they count enforcement actions over a stated period, not the share of players who cheat.

Those totals can change with detection tools, enforcement windows, the types of behavior counted, and the active player population. Crytek cautions that more bans do not automatically mean the situation is better or worse. A larger total may reflect the detection of a pattern that was already widespread; a smaller one may reflect different circumstances. Community reports can convey how a problem feels, but they are not representative prevalence measurements.

How developers try to detect and deter cheating

Anti-cheat is layered: software detection, game-side analysis, player reports, manual review, and protections that reduce what cheats can exploit all play different roles. The examples below are developer descriptions of their own systems, not independent measurements of how effective those systems are.

Hunt: Showdown combines automated detection with review

Crytek said an upgrade to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) for Hunt: Showdown Update 2.0 led to more than 2,300 bans after catching cheaters who had previously escaped detection. The company also said it was developing game-specific behavioral analysis for suspicious patterns EAC might miss, while keeping details of detection methods confidential.

In a separate Fair Play Task Force update, Crytek described working alongside EAC, reviewing community reports through its support team, and using manual review to decide whether a ban is warranted. It also described Anybrain input analysis, including efforts to detect mouse-and-keyboard use in controller environments. Crytek said its PC rollout was still being refined to avoid false positives and described a formal appeal route.

Selective cheating can take longer to confirm

In a May 2, 2025 update, Crytek reported 4,929 cheater bans in Hunt: Showdown since January. It distinguished overt “rage cheaters” from selective “togglers,” who may use a cheat only at key moments and otherwise appear to play normally. Crytek said confirming the latter can require collecting more data over time. This is Crytek’s explanation of its own detection challenge, not a universal classification for all games.

Marathon emphasizes server authority and limited information

In its February 23, 2026 post, “Marathon: Networking and Security,” Bungie said dedicated servers are authoritative over movement, shooting, actions, and inventory. It also described server-side Fog of War, telemetry analysis for anomalies, and protections aimed at item duplication and other economic cheats. Bungie said players found cheating would be permanently banned and that an appeal system would be available. These are Bungie’s stated design and policies, not independently verified effectiveness claims.

How to read the ban numbers

Crytek’s May 2025 figure and its later roadmap figures describe different reporting windows and categories, so they should not be added together or treated as a trend in cheating prevalence.

Hunt: Showdown figure What Crytek reported What it does not tell you
More than 2,300 bans Crytek said its Update 2.0 EAC upgrade had generated this many bans since Update 2.0’s release. Crytek’s anti-cheat strategy update. It is not a cheating rate or a directly comparable count for another period.
4,929 cheater bans Crytek reported this total since January in its May 2, 2025 update. Crytek’s May 2, 2025 update. It does not reveal what share of the player base cheated.
3,515 cheating bans; 428 mouse-and-keyboard-on-console bans; 269 in-game-reason bans Crytek reported these totals since its preceding update. The opened roadmap page did not display a publication year. Crytek’s roadmap update. The categories and interval differ; the figures cannot be combined with the other totals to estimate prevalence.

Crytek explicitly warns that a higher ban count is not automatically evidence of a worsening problem. Enforcement totals can reflect which behaviors are detectable and what period is being counted, as well as how the developer categorizes bans.

What these examples can—and cannot—show

The examples show why extraction-game cheating can feel costly and what two developers say they are doing about it. Bungie’s account focuses on server authority, limiting exposed information, telemetry, and economic security. Crytek’s accounts describe EAC, behavioral analysis, player reports, manual review, input analysis, and appeals.

Those descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison of anti-cheat effectiveness, and they cannot establish which game or genre has the most cheaters. As Bungie’s Marathon Dev Team put it in its February 23, 2026 security post: “No network or security model can guarantee perfection, but we are committed to protecting the Marathon competitive experience and ensuring everyone has their fair chance at exfiltrating with a backpack full of sweet loot.”
