Choose an external SSD for faster transfers, quiet operation, and frequent travel. Choose an external HDD when you want more storage for less money and do not need to access the files as often. Neither drive type is a dependable backup by itself: keep important files in another copy, and check that the drive’s interface works with your computer or other host device.
How external HDDs and SSDs work
An external HDD stores data magnetically on spinning platters and uses moving mechanical parts to read and write it. An external SSD stores data in NAND flash memory and has no moving parts. That difference shapes their main trade-offs: HDDs are typically the value-oriented choice for large stores of data, while SSDs are the performance-oriented choice.

How to choose between an external HDD and SSD
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| More capacity for less money | External HDD | Western Digital positions HDDs as a cost-effective option for massive storage, while SSDs carry a premium for performance. Actual prices and capacities vary by model and should be compared using current listings. Western Digital’s HDD-versus-SSD comparison |
| Frequent large transfers or active files | External SSD | SSDs offer higher performance and lower latency, though the drive, connection, and host device limit the speed you can reach. Kingston’s SSD-versus-HDD comparison Seagate’s SSD-versus-HDD overview |
| Travel or frequent handling | External SSD | With no moving parts, SSDs are more shock resistant than mechanical HDDs. That does not make them indestructible; check a model’s own drop or water-resistance rating if it matters. Kingston’s comparison |
| Quiet operation | External SSD | Mechanical HDDs can make noise as their moving parts operate. Kingston’s comparison |
| Another copy of important files | Either, plus a separate copy | Both types can fail. A second drive can provide another copy, but no single drive type guarantees against data loss. Kingston’s SSD FAQ |
Speed: SSDs are faster, but the connection matters
Kingston’s December 2023 comparison says the fastest commercially available HDDs offer speeds around 160 MB/s, while entry-level SSDs are typically more than three times faster. It also gives technology-level examples of SATA SSDs exceeding 500 MB/s and top NVMe SSDs reaching up to 7,000 MB/s. These are vendor-published figures, not guarantees for an external drive: its interface and the connected device can limit performance. Kingston’s comparison
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a portable external SSD, check the specific drive’s stated speed and the port on your computer. A fast storage technology cannot deliver its maximum through a slower connection, and different devices may support different interfaces. Seagate likewise notes that external-drive performance depends on both interface and storage technology. Seagate’s overview

Capacity, cost, portability, and noise
Choose an HDD for economical bulk storage
A portable external HDD is a practical starting point for a large photo or video archive, or files you do not access constantly. HDDs are positioned as a cost-effective way to store massive amounts of data. Compare the capacity and interface of each model, and make sure it is compatible with the device you plan to use. Western Digital’s comparison
Choose an SSD for speed and frequent travel
A portable external SSD is the better fit when you regularly move large files, work directly from stored files, or carry the drive between locations. Its lack of moving parts makes it more resistant to shocks than an HDD. Kingston notes that portable HDDs can be vulnerable to drops and jostling during transit or ordinary use; shock resistance is a relative advantage, not a promise that an SSD will survive every impact. - Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
SSDs also avoid the mechanical noise that can come with an HDD. For any portable drive, check the model’s own specifications rather than assuming it is waterproof or drop-proof.
Reliability and backup: neither drive is failure-proof
SSDs have finite write endurance, commonly expressed as TBW, or terabytes written. Wear-leveling and over-provisioning help manage flash wear, but they do not make a drive immune to failure. HDDs have mechanical failure modes. The available manufacturer information does not establish a universal lifespan or failure-rate winner between the two types, so do not choose on the assumption that one will always last longer. - Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
For files you cannot replace, keep another copy on a separate drive or storage device. An external HDD or SSD can be part of that plan, but storing the only copy on either leaves it vulnerable to device failure, loss, or damage.

Check compatibility before buying or reusing a drive
- Match the interface: Check the drive’s connection and the host device’s supported port. The interface affects compatibility and can limit transfer speed.
- Check any enclosure: If you are putting an internal SSD into an external enclosure, confirm that the enclosure supports the SSD’s interface.
- Check security settings: Kingston warns that an ATA password setting can make an SSD inaccessible when used through an external enclosure. Kingston’s SSD FAQ
- Check model-specific protection: Do not infer water or drop protection from the fact that a drive is an SSD; verify the particular model’s rating.
Quick decision
- Pick an external HDD if your main goal is high-capacity storage at a lower cost and you access the files less often.
- Pick an external SSD if speed, quiet operation, or carrying the drive frequently matters more.
- For important data, use either type as one part of a backup plan, not as the sole copy.
