To access an external hard drive on an iPhone, connect it to the charging port with a compatible cable or adapter, unlock the phone, then open Files > Browse and select the drive under Locations. The drive must use a supported format and have one data partition; some drives also need external power.
Check the drive and iPhone connection first
Start by identifying the iPhone’s charging connector and the drive’s cable. Apple says iPhone 15 and later use USB-C and can connect to external storage. For a Lightning iPhone, Apple lists the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter and Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter as possible connections. A compatible plug alone does not guarantee that a drive will work. Apple requires one data partition and supports these formats:

Apple says you can change a drive’s format using a Mac, PC, or Files. Reformatting can erase data, so back up the drive before changing its format and confirm the correct drive is selected.

Connect the drive and open it in Files
- Connect the drive. Use a cable or adapter that matches the iPhone’s port and the drive’s connector.
- Unlock the iPhone. Storage accessories require the iPhone to be unlocked before use. If you connected the drive while the phone was locked, disconnect it and reconnect it after unlocking. Apple explains accessory access in Allow USB and other accessories to connect to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Files. Tap Browse, then choose the drive’s name under Locations. If you do not see Locations, tap Browse again.
If the drive does not appear
Unlock and reconnect
Make sure the iPhone is unlocked, unplug the drive, and reconnect it. If you changed the Wired Accessories setting, check it under Settings > Privacy & Security > Wired Accessories; the available behavior can depend on the iPhone and its settings.
Check power
A hard drive may draw more power than the iPhone can provide through a direct connection. Apple says external hard drives often require external power. With a USB-C iPhone, Apple suggests a powered USB hub. With a Lightning iPhone, it suggests the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter connected to a USB power adapter. Check that any hub or adapter supports data as well as power and that the drive’s own power needs are met.

Verify the partition and format
If the drive powers on but remains absent from Files, confirm that it has one data partition and uses one of Apple’s supported formats listed above. Formatting or repartitioning may resolve an incompatibility, but it can erase existing files; back up the data first.

What compatibility does—and does not—mean
Apple’s guidance describes supported file systems, partition layout, connection options, and power arrangements. It does not establish that every hard drive, capacity, adapter, or power draw will work with every iPhone. If your drive still is not recognized after checking those factors, consult the drive maker’s specifications for its power and connection requirements, then confirm that your adapter or hub meets them.
