Choose an external USB DVD drive if you use discs occasionally, own a laptop, or want to move the drive between compatible computers. Choose an internal SATA DVD drive only if your desktop has a compatible optical-drive bay and the required connections, and you are prepared to install it. In either case, confirm the specific model reads or writes the disc formats you need and supports your operating system.
External vs. internal: the practical difference
An external DVD drive sits outside the computer and connects over USB. It avoids opening the computer and can be unplugged and used with another compatible system. HP specifies that its referenced external USB DVD drive works with laptops and desktops that have an open USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port; its package includes the drive and a USB Type-A cable. Check the HP model’s connection details before assuming its cable fits your computer without an adapter.

That portability is useful when an optical drive is an occasional tool rather than a permanent part of one computer. For example, a laptop owner might connect a drive when accessing a disc and put it away when finished. A household or workplace with more than one compatible computer might also move one drive between systems, although each computer still needs a suitable connection and operating-system support. “External” describes where the hardware is installed; it does not guarantee that every computer will recognize every model.

Internal fit is more than a question of whether the computer is a desktop. You need a bay that is present, accessible, and the right size, as well as compatible internal connections. A computer could be a desktop and still lack a usable optical-drive bay or the connections needed for the drive you are considering. Verify the exact computer model before shopping, not just its general category.
Which type should you choose?
Choose an external USB drive when
- You have a laptop or a desktop without a usable optical-drive bay.
- You need a drive for occasional access to music, video, archived files, or software on disc.
- You want to move the drive among computers, subject to each computer’s connection and operating-system compatibility.
- You do not want to install hardware inside the computer.
- You can confirm that an available USB port and the drive’s cable connection are compatible.
Before buying, distinguish “I have a USB port” from “this exact drive is supported by my computer.” HP’s cited model specifies an open USB 2.0 or 3.0 port and includes a USB Type-A cable. That is a useful model-specific example, not a universal promise for all external DVD drives or all USB connector types. Check the drive’s product listing and computer documentation, especially if you expect to use an adapter.
Choose an internal SATA drive when
- You have a desktop with an available, correctly sized optical-drive bay.
- The computer has compatible SATA data and power connections.
- You want the drive installed in that computer rather than carried between systems.
- You are comfortable checking compatibility and performing an internal installation.
The internal option makes sense only after both physical fit and connection support are confirmed. A product listing that says SATA does not establish that the computer has an appropriate bay or that the drive is compatible with its particular configuration. Consult the computer’s service documentation or manufacturer compatibility list. If you cannot confirm the bay and connections, do not buy an internal drive based on the assumption that desktops necessarily accept one.
There is no need to choose the same form factor for every use. If a computer has no confirmed internal fit but does have a compatible USB port, an external model is the more straightforward path. If a desktop has a verified bay and the user prefers a fixed installation, an internal model may fit that need. The right answer follows from the computer’s documented support and the way you plan to use the drive, not a blanket claim that one design is best.
Compare fit, installation, sharing, and function
| Factor | External USB DVD drive | Internal SATA DVD drive |
|---|---|---|
| Computer fit | Needs a compatible USB port. HP specifies USB 2.0 or 3.0 for its referenced model. HP model details | Needs a suitable internal bay and compatible SATA data and power connections. Confirm against the exact computer. |
| Installation | Connects outside the computer; no drive-bay installation is needed. HP lists a USB cable in the referenced package. HP model details | Must be installed inside a compatible computer. |
| Sharing | Can be disconnected and used with another compatible computer; verify the drive’s OS and connection requirements for each one. | Stays installed in the computer unless removed. |
| Read or write | Depends on the model. Check the supported disc formats and speeds. | Depends on the model. DVD-ROM is read-only; a DVD writer supports only the writing formats listed for that model. |
| Relative speed | Model-specific; available references do not establish a general speed advantage. | Model-specific; available references do not establish a general speed advantage. |
Use the table as a starting point, not a substitute for product specifications. A form factor tells you how the drive connects and where it sits; it does not tell you whether the device can write a particular disc, what read and write speeds it supports, or which operating systems its maker lists. Those are model-level details.
HP’s optical-drive reference distinguishes SATA DVD-ROM, SATA DVD writers, and external USB drives. It also says supported formats and speeds vary by product and that some writing formats require special software. Review HP’s optical-drive guidance, then use the specific model’s specifications for a buying decision.
Read-only access and DVD burning are different needs
The words “DVD drive” do not guarantee that the device can burn discs. A DVD-ROM drive reads discs but does not write them. If you need to create or erase discs, look for a DVD writer and verify that it supports the exact media you intend to use. The product name alone is not enough to settle this: check the manufacturer’s supported-format list for the exact model.

Please verify your device type before purchasing
- For reading: confirm that the drive supports the CD or DVD format you have. Do not assume that support for one disc type means support for every CD or DVD variation.
- For burning: confirm that it writes the specific formats and layers you plan to use, including dual-layer media if needed. A drive may be a writer while still not supporting every format or layer you have.
- For speed: compare the model’s stated read and write speeds for the formats that matter to you. Do not assume an external or internal design is inherently faster.
- For software: check what application is needed for your writing task. HP notes that some formats require special software and that its referenced drive does not include one.
It helps to start with the disc task rather than the shopping category. If your goal is to open or read existing discs, look for read support for those formats. If you want to create or erase discs, seek a writer and check both its write-format support and the software requirement. If a disc is dual-layer, include that detail in your compatibility check rather than treating it as an ordinary single-layer disc.
A drive’s hardware capability and the computer’s available software are separate considerations. The drive may list support for writing a particular type of media, but HP’s guidance notes that some writing formats require a special application. The referenced HP drive does not include one. Verify what software is required and whether it is available for your operating system before assuming that buying a writer completes the setup.
Check compatibility before buying
- Identify the computer. Record its exact model, operating system, and whether it is a laptop or desktop. Compatibility depends on the computer and the drive, not just on the connector’s name. If more than one computer will use the drive, check each one.
- For an external drive, check USB. Confirm that the computer has a compatible, available USB port and that the included cable fits. HP specifies USB 2.0 or 3.0 for the cited external model. If your computer has a different port, check whether the drive maker supports using an adapter rather than assuming it will work. Also confirm the product’s operating-system requirements for every computer where you intend to use it.
- For an internal drive, check the bay and connections. Confirm that there is an accessible optical-drive bay of the right size and compatible SATA data and power connections. Use the computer’s service documentation or manufacturer compatibility information; HPE’s documented internal examples are SATA, including 9.5 mm drives. Do not infer that a 9.5 mm drive fits a particular computer just because that dimension appears in a product specification.
- Match the drive to the job. Decide whether you only need to read discs or also need to burn them. Verify formats, layers, and model-specific speeds before purchase. If the drive will be shared, make sure it can handle the media you need on all the intended systems.
- Verify operating-system support. Check the exact drive’s specifications for your OS. ASUS directs buyers to each model’s specifications for operating-system compatibility, and its support guidance includes external and internal models under Windows 11 compatibility. Check ASUS’s Windows 11 guidance and the individual product page rather than treating a category-level statement as a guarantee.
- Confirm task software. If you plan to burn discs, make sure you have compatible software for the media and operating system. A drive’s ability to write a format does not by itself establish that your computer has the application you need.
- Check for a specific boot requirement. If you need to start the computer from a DVD, confirm that the computer’s firmware supports booting from the selected drive and connection. The product references do not establish universal boot-from-disc behavior, so do not assume that a drive usable after startup will also be usable as a boot device.
This order can prevent common buying mistakes. First find the computer’s exact model and available connections. Next rule out a form factor that the system cannot accommodate. Then match read/write capabilities to the disc task, and finally confirm operating-system and software support. Reversing that order—for example, picking a drive because its title says “DVD writer” before checking the computer—can leave you with hardware that does not fit or does not perform the job you need.
Performance, price, noise, and booting: what the comparison can establish
There is no supported universal claim that internal DVD drives are faster than external ones, or vice versa. Manufacturer references provide model-specific specifications rather than a controlled category-wide comparison. Compare the read and write ratings for the exact models and formats you plan to use. A speed listed for one format should not be generalized to every format the drive supports.
The available product information also does not establish a general winner for price, noise, longevity, or boot-from-disc behavior. Those questions require checking the exact drive and computer. The sources do not provide a reliable category-wide price comparison, so avoid assuming an external model always costs more or less than an internal one. Likewise, there is no basis here for promising that one form factor will be quieter or last longer.
For booting, compatibility involves the computer as well as the drive. If you need to boot from a DVD, verify that the computer’s firmware supports booting from the selected drive and connection. Do not infer boot support simply because the operating system can use the drive after startup. If that requirement is essential, check the computer manufacturer’s system documentation rather than relying on a product category description.
These limits matter because a feature can be true for an individual model without being true of its whole category. The reviewed specifications offer examples of formats, connections, and speeds for particular products; they do not supply an independent external-versus-internal test. Use those specifications to compare the two models actually under consideration, not to make a general claim about all USB and SATA drives.

Examples of products and model-specific checks
Manufacturer product categories illustrate the distinction, but their listings are not substitutes for compatibility checks. HPE documents internal SATA DVD-ROM and DVD-RW products as well as a mobile USB DVD-RW drive. HPE QuickSpecs identify the documented form factors, including 9.5 mm internal models. The examples confirm that internal and external products exist; they do not confirm that a given HPE drive is appropriate for a different computer.
ASUS likewise lists external and internal DVD-drive lines, including the ZenDrive U9M (SDRW-08U9M-U) and DRW-24D5MT. Its category page says, “Our drives are compatible with almost any desktop or notebook computer.” Treat that as broad category language, not a promise that every model works with every computer: confirm the exact connection and OS specifications. See ASUS’s optical-drive categories.
These examples can help you understand which product type to search for: “external USB DVD drive” for a portable USB-connected model, or “internal SATA DVD drive” for a desktop installation. They are not endorsements of a particular model for your system. Before ordering, open the exact product specifications and match its connection, supported media, read/write functions, speeds, and OS support against the computer and the job.
A quick decision checklist
- Pick external if USB compatibility is confirmed and convenience, laptop use, or sharing the drive matters most.
- Pick internal if the exact desktop documentation confirms a compatible bay, SATA data connection, and power connection, and you want a fixed installation.
- Pick a writer, not just a DVD-ROM drive, if you need to burn discs.
- Check the exact formats, layers, speeds, software, and OS support against your intended task rather than relying on the product category name.
- Check model and system documentation for special requirements such as a particular cable, adapter, or boot-from-disc support.

Does every DVD drive burn discs?
No. DVD-ROM is read-only. A DVD writer can write only the media formats listed for its specific model. Check for support for the disc types and layers you intend to use, including dual-layer media if relevant. Also check whether your task requires writing software that is not included with the drive.
Will the same external DVD drive work on more than one computer?
An external drive can be disconnected and moved, but each computer must have a compatible connection and the drive must support its operating system. Verify those requirements for every computer you plan to use. Portability does not mean universal compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes a DVD drive work with Windows 11?
Do not rely on the phrase “DVD drive” alone. ASUS’s Windows 11 guidance lists external and internal DVD-drive models and recommends checking the operating-system specifications for each product. Confirm support on the exact model’s page and for your computer configuration.
Can I boot my computer from an external DVD drive?
The product references do not establish universal boot-from-disc support. If this is a requirement, verify that the computer’s firmware supports booting from the selected drive and connection. A drive working once the operating system has started does not by itself prove that the computer can boot from it.
Are internal DVD drives always cheaper, quieter, or longer-lasting?
The reviewed research does not support a category-wide answer for price, noise, or longevity. Those are model-specific questions; compare the exact products and check their specifications or documentation rather than assuming a form factor guarantees an advantage.
