UK-based Extend Robotics says it has raised £2.6 million in Pre-A funding to expand a service in which manufacturers pay for completed robotic work instead of buying and operating a robot themselves. The model still relies on people: remote operators control robots, while AI assists with routine parts of a task.
What Extend Robotics announced
In an announcement dated 28 September 2026, Extend Robotics said Skyworks Venture Capital Fund led its £2.6 million Pre-A round, with Neo Venture (Europe) and Zip Capital participating. The company said it will use the funding to scale its Result-as-a-Service offer across UK and European industry and develop a network of remote operators. Extend Robotics’ announcement did not disclose the round valuation, investor ownership, prices or contract terms.

The phrase “sell factory work instead of machines” describes Extend’s commercial positioning, not a sector-wide shift. Under the company’s account, customers pay for completed work rather than making an upfront robot purchase, while Extend takes on more responsibility for deployment and output. That does not establish that customers have no integration requirements, or that robotics hardware is never sold.
How the service is meant to work
Extend describes its AMAS platform as a way for operators without a robotics background to remotely control a robot arm or humanoid through an immersive 3D interface. AI assistance handles routine portions of tasks, while a person remains in the control loop. The company’s manufacturing materials also describe VR teleoperation, robot fleet monitoring and data collection. The available descriptions do not establish end-to-end autonomous operation.

The company pitches this approach for work that conventional automation may not readily absorb, including small-batch, high-mix production, rework, maintenance and hazardous operations. Its examples include pick-and-place, post-processing and machine tending. These are stated use cases, not independently verified results for every operation.
What deployments and scale claims are reported
Extend says its system is performing quality control on live produce at Adrian Scripps, a UK apple grower, on a working packing line. It also cites two applications at Leyland Trucks: teaching a robot to fit high-voltage Master Service Disconnect units, and a separate spray-painting deployment for custom components. These are company-reported examples; the announcement does not provide independently audited performance data.

The funding announcement also says Extend has 35 subscription customers across four sales regions and that revenue doubled year on year for three consecutive years. Those figures are company claims. The materials reviewed do not establish an audited revenue series, customer list, throughput, accuracy, intervention rate, uptime or unit economics.

How this differs from buying automation
The distinction is primarily commercial: a conventional automation purchase puts the equipment acquisition and operation with the manufacturer, while Extend says its service charges for completed work and takes on more of the deployment and output risk. The precise allocation of responsibilities depends on a contract, and no contract terms or prices were disclosed.

| Question | Conventional automation purchase | Extend’s stated service model |
|---|---|---|
| What is paid for? | Robot equipment, with operating and integration costs also relevant to the customer. | Completed work, according to Extend’s description; pricing terms are not stated in its announcement. |
| Who supplies or owns the equipment? | The manufacturer buys equipment, though suppliers and arrangements vary. | Extend describes a service rather than an upfront customer purchase; ownership terms are not stated. |
| Who carries deployment and output risk? | Responsibility depends on the purchase and integration contracts. | Extend says it carries more of this risk; the exact allocation is not stated. |
| How much human intervention remains? | Varies by system and task. | Remote human operation is part of the described model, with AI assistance for routine task portions. |
| What performance evidence is available? | Depends on vendor and deployment; no universal comparison is established here. | The cited sources do not state independently verified cycle time, accuracy or cost. |
Without comparable pricing and measured task results, there is not enough evidence to conclude that paying for output is cheaper or better than buying automation. Manufacturers assessing either approach would need to compare integration responsibilities, uptime commitments, task-success definitions, human intervention and the cost per acceptable unit of work.
What the funding does—and does not—signal
Extend says it was named an official Unitree Robotics integrator. Its announcement also cites selection for NVIDIA’s Robotics Startup Showcase at GTC 2026 and participation in the Google DeepMind Robotics Accelerator Demo Day. These details provide partnership and program context; they do not establish product compatibility, performance endorsement or availability of any particular robot or headset.

The £2.6 million round is separate from a prior £500,000 convertible loan note investment documented by Digital Catapult in 2024. Digital Catapult’s 16 May 2024 announcement describes that earlier investment, not the 2026 Pre-A round. Companies House lists Extend Robotics’ legal entity as active and incorporated in 2019. What manufacturers should ask before adopting the model
- Which party provides, owns, maintains and replaces the robot and any associated equipment?
- What counts as completed work, and how are rejected or defective outputs handled?
- Who pays for site integration, safety measures, operator training and changes to the production line?
- What uptime, throughput and response-time commitments are written into the contract?
- How often must a remote operator intervene, and what happens if connectivity or remote support is unavailable?
- Can the supplier provide task-specific evidence for accuracy, cycle time and cost per accepted output?
Those answers determine whether shifting payment from equipment to output also shifts meaningful operational risk—or simply changes how the bill is presented.
