It is possible, but the earlier Jantar Mantar episode does not show that a repeat will force Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) says it will return to the protest site on October 10 if Kumar has not stepped down. The INDIA bloc has announced its own marches. As of October 3, 2026, the actions’ eventual scale and impact—and whether Kumar will resign or the Election Commission will change policy—remain unknown.
What would it mean to replicate the “Jantar Mantar effect”?
The phrase refers to a political sequence: CJP’s earlier Jantar Mantar protest over the NEET paper leak came before Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation on July 25. The timing gave the protest a symbolic association with a high-profile consequence. Timing alone, however, does not establish that the protest caused the resignation or that another protest can produce the same outcome.
The current campaign has a different grievance and target. CJP and other critics are challenging the Election Commission’s handling of electoral-roll revision and registration, and CJP is calling for Kumar to resign. The Commission disputes key characterisations of its process. The comparison is useful as a political analogy, not as evidence that the two episodes are equivalent.
How the two episodes differ
| Comparison | Earlier NEET episode | Current electoral-roll campaign |
|---|---|---|
| Grievance | Protest over the NEET paper leak. | Questions about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Form 6 registration, data centralisation, and routes for reviewing removed names. |
| Target and requested consequence | The protest preceded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. | CJP has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar; critics also seek answers about electoral-roll administration. |
| Evidence and official position | The available account establishes the sequence of protest and resignation, not a causal link. | Allegations about SIR and internal objections are contested. The Commission says the revision is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries while retaining eligible voters. |
| Mobilisation | The earlier CJP protest is the reference point for the “Jantar Mantar 2.0” slogan. | CJP has its own campaign and protest plans. The INDIA bloc has announced separate actions; the two programmes should not be treated as one organisation’s effort. |
| Outcome known as of October 3, 2026 | Pradhan’s resignation followed the protest, but that chronology does not prove the protest alone caused it. | No resignation or policy change is established. CJP’s October 10 return plan is conditional, and the announced actions are still unfolding. |
What CJP and other critics are challenging
CJP’s campaign, branded “Election Commission Thik Karo,” centres on the SIR and the transparency of electoral-roll decisions. The party has raised questions about how people can register through Form 6, how removed names can be reviewed, and how electoral-roll data is centralised. CJP has also asked that commissioners’ objection notes and the Commission’s responses be made public.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Claim about exclusions: The Indian Express reported that CJP cited more than 13 crore names excluded from draft rolls across 30 states and union territories. That is CJP’s attributed claim, not an independently audited total established by the reporting.
- Disputed account of commissioners’ objections: The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded objections on at least 14 occasions over ten months, concerning additions, deletions, Form 6 changes, and centralised roll data. The Election Commission disputed the characterisation: it said the notes formed part of decision-making and that decisions during the period were unanimous. The Associated Press also reported that the Commission disputed claims that the commissioners had submitted formal written objections.
- Possible regional changes: The Associated Press reported, citing Election Commission data, that voter lists in some regions could shrink by as much as 30%. That is not a confirmed national deletion figure. The Commission says SIR is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries while ensuring eligible voters remain registered; critics warn that requirements could exclude legitimate voters. The Commission and government deny wrongdoing.
CJP co-convenor Saurav Das told The Indian Express on September 24, 2026: “The Election Commission cannot ask citizens to trust a system while refusing to explain how major changes to voter registration, deletion and data access are being authorised.” That is the campaign’s argument, not a finding that the allegations are true.
Who is mobilising, and what has been announced?
The protest activity involves overlapping opposition and civil-society actions, but they are not all part of a single programme.

| Date or window | Organisers and announced action | Status as of October 3, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| October 2–8 | The INDIA bloc announced district-level “Save Democracy March” events. | The march window is under way. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said opposition MPs would march to the Election Commission on October 6. Hindustan Times reported his statement on September 30: “With unanimity, everyone vowed to fight together.” |
| October 2 | AISA, Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha, and lawyer Prashant Bhushan called for a Jantar Mantar protest over the Commission and SIR. CJP held a mobilisation in Mumbai. | Delhi Police refused permission for the Jantar Mantar demonstration, citing expected turnout and security concerns. The Indian Express reported extensive security deployment and barricades; the Associated Press reported that police prevented student and civil-society groups from gathering at the site and detained dozens. |
| Second week of October | INDIA bloc leaders plan to meet the President. | Announced, but the meeting has not yet taken place as of October 3. |
| October 10, conditionally | CJP announced a return to Jantar Mantar if Kumar has not resigned. | A stated future plan, not a completed protest. CJP national convener Abhijeet Dipke told The Indian Express on September 24: “If the CEC doesn’t resign, Jantar Mantar 2.0 will definitely happen”. |
What would show that the pressure is having an effect?
A resignation is only one possible measure of impact, and it is not the same as a change in electoral-roll policy. Readers can assess developments against distinct outcomes rather than treating any protest announcement as proof of success.
- A personnel consequence: Whether Kumar resigns is a clear, observable outcome, but no statistic in the available reporting establishes how likely protest pressure is to bring it about.
- Institutional answers: Whether the Commission publishes the objection notes and responses CJP requested, or provides further explanation of SIR and its review procedures, would address transparency demands without necessarily changing the CEC’s position.
- A policy or process change: Any announced change to registration, deletion, data access, or review would need to be assessed on its terms. It would not by itself establish that all allegations made by CJP were correct.
- Mobilisation beyond a single venue: The INDIA bloc’s district marches and parliamentary actions, CJP’s campaign, and other groups’ activity are separate strands. Their reach and continuity matter to the scale of pressure, but the October 2 permission denial shows that access to Jantar Mantar cannot be assumed.
Can they reproduce the earlier result?
They can reproduce the symbolism of a high-profile protest, and CJP has explicitly invoked “Jantar Mantar 2.0.” But a similar location and slogan do not make the current dispute equivalent to the NEET episode. The issue, institutional target, contested evidence, coalition structure, and protest logistics all differ. As of October 3, there is no basis for predicting that the INDIA bloc’s marches or CJP’s campaign will secure Kumar’s resignation or compel a change in Commission policy.

The most accurate answer is therefore conditional: organised pressure may keep SIR and electoral-roll transparency in public view, but whether it produces an official consequence is unresolved. October 6 and CJP’s conditional October 10 plan are upcoming tests of mobilisation, not evidence of an outcome already achieved.
