Choose Express if your team works primarily in JavaScript or TypeScript and wants a flexible Node.js framework built around routes and middleware. Choose FastAPI if your team is Python-first and wants typed request models, integrated validation, and OpenAPI documentation—especially when the API sits alongside Python data-science or machine-learning work. Neither is the right choice for every project, and the available evidence does not establish a universal performance winner.
How to choose between Express and FastAPI
Start with the language your team can maintain, debug, and operate confidently. Express is a Node.js framework for JavaScript or TypeScript; FastAPI is a Python framework built around standard Python type hints. The surrounding codebase matters too: an API that needs to work closely with Python data or machine-learning libraries may fit naturally into a Python service, while an existing Node.js application may be easier to extend with Express.

| Decision | Express | FastAPI |
|---|---|---|
| Language ecosystem | Node.js with JavaScript or TypeScript | Python |
| Core style | Flexible routing and middleware | API framework organized around Python type hints |
| API validation and documentation | Choose and assemble the packages and conventions that fit the application | Request models, validation, and OpenAPI support are central features |
| Good first fit | A team or codebase already centered on JavaScript or TypeScript | A Python team or an API closely connected to Python data-science or machine-learning work |
Those differences are more useful decision criteria than a blanket claim that one framework is better. Express leaves more architectural choices to the application; FastAPI provides more API-specific conventions as part of its framework.

What Express and FastAPI provide
Express: routing and middleware with room to compose
Express is a Node.js web application framework whose familiar building blocks are routes and middleware. Its flexible approach means the application team chooses how to organize the service and which packages to use for concerns such as request validation and API documentation. That flexibility can suit an existing Node.js codebase, but it also means the team must make and maintain those choices.

For production applications, Express’s official guidance addresses both code and operating setup. It cautions that synchronous functions block the executing process and recommends using asynchronous alternatives in production. See the Express production performance and reliability guidance.
FastAPI: typed API models and built-in API conventions
FastAPI is a Python framework for building APIs using standard Python type hints. Its documentation describes compatibility with OpenAPI and JSON Schema, while its request-body tutorial shows how models support parsing and validation. For a team that wants those API concerns integrated rather than assembled from separate choices, this is a substantial distinction.

FastAPI’s own description calls it a “modern, fast (high-performance)” framework. That is the project’s characterization, not independent evidence that it outperforms Express in a particular workload. The project documentation also explains why comparisons should account for validation, serialization, and documentation, not just a minimal request handler. See FastAPI’s documentation and its benchmark discussion.
Is FastAPI faster than Express?
The evidence does not support a categorical answer. A benchmark result depends on what each system is asked to do and which layers are included. FastAPI’s maintainers distinguish Uvicorn, an ASGI server, from Starlette, a web microframework, and FastAPI, an API framework that adds validation and other features. Comparing components with different responsibilities—or comparing a minimal route against an endpoint that validates and serializes data—can produce a misleading ranking.

No controlled, directly comparable Express-versus-FastAPI result for a named workload, runtime version, hardware configuration, and deployment setup is established here. If throughput is important to your decision, benchmark representative endpoints from your own service. Keep the database, payloads, validation, serialization, server and process configuration, hardware, and concurrency consistent; examine latency percentiles and resource use as well as throughput. Those are testing recommendations, not results from a test of these frameworks.
How async behavior and errors affect the choice
Both frameworks support asynchronous programming, but asynchronous syntax does not make CPU-heavy work disappear. FastAPI’s documentation describes concurrency as useful for work that spends time waiting, and multiprocessing as an option for CPU-bound workloads, including machine-learning applications. For either framework, the workload and the behavior of its libraries matter alongside the handler syntax. See FastAPI’s async guidance.

Express 5 handles rejected async handlers differently from callbacks
In Express 5, a route handler or middleware that returns a rejected Promise—or throws inside an async function—is forwarded automatically to Express’s error flow through next. Callback-based APIs do not follow that returned-Promise path, so their errors still need to be forwarded appropriately. This behavior is version-sensitive: check the major version in the application and consult the Express error-handling guide and Express 5 migration guide.

Production deployment is part of the decision
A framework choice also commits the team to an operating model. Express publishes production guidance covering application code and environment choices, including synchronous work, reverse proxies, and clustering. FastAPI maintains separate deployment documentation; its users need to understand the Python runtime and the ASGI serving and deployment setup chosen for the target platform. Compare those operational needs with your team’s experience and hosting constraints, rather than treating framework syntax as the whole decision.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Which framework should you choose for a REST API?
- Choose Express when the team is strongest in JavaScript or TypeScript, the application already runs on Node.js, or you prefer to compose routes, middleware, and supporting packages around your own conventions.
- Choose FastAPI when the team is strongest in Python and wants typed request models, integrated validation, and OpenAPI-oriented documentation as core parts of API development.
- Give FastAPI extra consideration when the API belongs close to an existing Python data-science or machine-learning stack.
- For a performance-led decision, measure the actual service. Compare equivalent endpoint behavior and deployment conditions rather than relying on a framework-wide ranking.
