If you need a dependable backup, export the form, inspect the archive, and compare it with the live form before relying on it. A printout is only a static copy, while Sheets and CSV exports contain responses rather than a documented editable-form backup.
Choose the right kind of export
“Export a Google Form” can mean three different things. Pick the route based on whether you need the editable form, a readable paper copy, or respondents’ answers.

| Route | What you get | Images and branching | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google account data export | Forms content named in Google’s export inventory, including titles, descriptions, questions, validation and grading settings, responses, quiz scores, manual feedback, and draft responses. | Google names embedded images. Its inventory does not explicitly name branching or section-navigation metadata, so preservation is not guaranteed by that documentation. | Archiving form content for inspection or retention. |
| Print from the Forms editor | A static, printable representation of the form. | Printed pages cannot retain working conditional navigation. Google does not promise that every image prints exactly as displayed, so check the output. | Paper review or a non-interactive reference copy. |
| Download responses as CSV or link to Sheets | Respondents’ answer data. | This is not documented as an export of the editable form, its images, or branching configuration. | Analyzing or transferring response data. |
| Rebuild with Apps Script | A developer-created form or migration workflow using the Forms service. | Not a turnkey guarantee of full-fidelity export; rebuilt images, sections, and answer-based destinations need validation. | Scripted migration when manual work is unsuitable. |
Archive the form with Google’s account export
Google includes Forms content in its account data export. The documented inventory lists titles, descriptions, questions, validation and grading settings, embedded images, responses, quiz scores, manual feedback, and draft responses. It does not explicitly list branching rules, so do not assume that the archive preserves them just because images and questions are included. See Google’s export-your-data help for the available account download route and included data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Google’s export-your-data page and select the data you want included, making sure Forms is selected.
- Create and download the archive using the choices offered in your Google account.
- Open the downloaded files and inspect the form content, images, questions, and settings you need to retain.
- Compare the archived material with the live form’s question order, image placement, sections, and answer-based destinations before changing or deleting the original.
The final comparison is particularly important for branching: Google’s listed export contents do not explicitly confirm that the rules survive. Treat the archive as unverified for this part until you have examined its contents and checked the behavior you need.

Check what branching means in your form
Google Forms can route respondents to sections based on answers. Google documents this behavior for multiple-choice and dropdown items; section breaks define the destinations and subsequent navigation. Its help page describes the feature this way: “You can set up a survey so that people only see certain sections based on their answers.” Read Google’s instructions for showing questions based on answers and compare each configured destination with the live form.
Images may appear inside a question or answer, or as standalone image items. Google’s current editor help states limits of 300 content items and 75 sections. These are editor limits, not assurances about what a downloaded archive will preserve. See Google’s form-editing help.

Print a static copy
To make a readable paper or static reference, open the form in the editor, select More, then choose Print. Google lists this command in its Forms screen-reader documentation: Use Google Forms with a screen reader.

Review the resulting pages to make sure the questions and images are legible and present as expected.
Export responses separately
If you need answers rather than the editable form, open the form’s Responses tab and either link responses to Google Sheets or download them as a CSV file. Google documents both options in View and manage form responses. These routes export response data; they do not establish that the form design, embedded images, or branching rules are included.

Google Apps Script’s FormApp service can open an existing form or create one. That makes it a possible basis for a custom migration, not a ready-made guarantee that every form feature will transfer. See the FormApp reference.

A form owner or editor with access to the source form should validate any rebuilt version. Check the images, section structure, and every answer-based destination, then test each branch in the rebuilt form or a controlled copy before depending on it.
Validate before relying on the backup
- Compare the archived question order, wording, and settings with the live form.
- Check each embedded and standalone image in the downloaded content.
- Compare section layout and the destination set for each branching answer.
- Test each route by submitting representative answers in the live form or a controlled copy.
- Keep the original form until the copy or archive has passed the checks required for your use.
Google documents how to publish and share a form with responders in its publish-and-share help; use the live form or an appropriately controlled copy when checking routes. Do not infer that a static printout or response spreadsheet is a replacement for that interactive form.
