When GitHub OAuth in an Expo app fails, first check which callback URL belongs in which service: GitHub sends users to Supabase, and Supabase then redirects them back to your app. Next verify the app’s URL scheme and Supabase redirect allowlist, then ensure the app turns the returned callback into a Supabase session. These are three useful troubleshooting checkpoints—not a verified account of three specific incidents.
Which callback URL goes in GitHub, and which goes in Supabase?
There are two separate redirects in this flow, and mixing them up is a common source of configuration errors:

- GitHub to Supabase: In GitHub’s OAuth App settings, set the Authorization callback URL to the callback URL shown in your Supabase project’s GitHub provider settings. Enter your GitHub client ID and secret in Supabase Auth. For local Supabase CLI auth, Supabase documents a different callback:
http://localhost:54321/auth/v1/callback. Use the callback for the environment you are testing, not the hosted URL by assumption. See Supabase’s GitHub provider guide. - Supabase to Expo: Register a URL scheme for your native app, then add the app’s redirect URI to Supabase Auth’s redirect allowlist. The
redirectTovalue passed in your code must match an allowed redirect, including its scheme and path. Supabase’s example allowlist pattern iscom.supabase://**; use a scheme and path suitable for your app. See Supabase’s native mobile deep-link guide.
Keep the two URLs distinct: GitHub’s callback ends at Supabase Auth; the app redirect is the later return trip from Supabase to your Expo app.

In a native flow, the browser handoff and the app’s deep link both need to work. Supabase’s documented pattern is to request an OAuth URL without letting the client redirect the browser automatically, open that URL in an Expo auth browser session, and then process the URL delivered back to the app.

- Register a stable custom scheme in Expo app configuration for the development or standalone build you are testing.
- Generate the matching redirect URI with Expo linking or auth-session utilities, and allow that exact URI in Supabase Auth’s URL Configuration.
- Request the provider URL from Supabase and open it in the browser session:
const { data, error } = await supabase.auth.signInWithOAuth({
provider: 'github',
options: {
redirectTo,
skipBrowserRedirect: true,
},
})
if (error) throw error
// Open data.url using the Expo auth browser session,
// then process the callback URL returned to the app.
This is a flow outline, not a complete drop-in implementation: use the Expo browser API and callback handling appropriate to your Expo SDK and configured OAuth response flow. If the browser finishes but the app does not open, verify that the installed native build includes the scheme you registered. Test on the actual development or standalone build and platform; do not assume Expo Go, iOS, and Android handle schemes identically.
Custom scheme or universal link?
| Approach | Setup and experience | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Custom URL scheme | Supabase documents custom schemes as an option. They are a direct way to route a callback to a native app. | Register the scheme in the app build and allow the matching redirect URI in Supabase. |
| Universal or app link | Supabase recommends universal links for the best user experience and says they require a more elaborate setup. | Follow current platform and Expo configuration guidance for your domain and build. They are not a universal requirement for every integration. |
For development, staging, and production, separate schemes or redirect registrations can make it easier to identify which environment is being tested. Supabase supports multiple allowed redirects, but does not prescribe one Expo project structure; treat environment separation as a practical choice.

Why does the callback open the app but leave me signed out?
Opening the app proves only that the deep link reached it. It does not prove that Supabase established a session. Inspect the full callback URL, handle any returned error, and complete the session exchange or session setup that matches the response your configured flow returns.
- Parse callback parameters and surface error information instead of treating every app-open event as success. Supabase notes that auth failures can return error details in URL fragments.
- Use the session handling appropriate to the actual flow. Supabase’s native example sets a session from access and refresh tokens when those are the callback response values; do not apply that token-based example if your flow instead requires a code exchange.
- Update signed-in UI only after Supabase confirms a session.
- Handle both a callback delivered while the app is already running and one that launches the app from a closed state.
For React Native, Supabase’s quickstart configures native persistence and refresh with AsyncStorage, persistSession: true, autoRefreshToken: true, and detectSessionInUrl: false. It also starts or stops token refresh as the app moves between foreground and background. Configure the URL polyfill and app-state handling as shown in the Supabase React Native quickstart. Use a publishable client key in the app; never expose a service-role secret there.

Check failures in this order
- GitHub reports a callback mismatch: Compare GitHub’s Authorization callback URL with the exact project callback displayed in Supabase’s provider settings. If testing with the local CLI, use its documented local callback in the GitHub app for that environment.
- Supabase rejects the redirect or sends it somewhere unexpected: Compare the runtime
redirectToURI against Supabase Auth’s redirect allowlist, including scheme and path. Confirm you are checking the app return URI, not GitHub’s callback to Supabase. - The browser completes but the app does not open: Check scheme registration, rebuild and install the app with that scheme, and verify the installed build is the one currently being tested.
- The app opens but the user is signed out: Inspect callback parameters and errors, finish the flow-appropriate code exchange or session setup, then confirm Supabase reports a session.
- The session disappears or refresh fails later: Verify native AsyncStorage persistence and that token refresh starts while the app is active.
