An Expo over-the-air (OTA) update can change the JavaScript and assets that installed copies of your app run, without a new store binary. That is why it deserves release discipline. The delivery mechanism is not what makes it dangerous. What matters is how far an update can travel and whether it can run on the builds that receive it. Four controls set that blast radius: runtime versions decide which builds an update can reach, pre-publish testing decides what you verify, staged rollouts and error monitoring limit exposure, and rollback, recovery and code signing decide how you get out of trouble and whether clients trust what they download.
This guide reflects Expo’s EAS Update documentation as checked in early October 2026. Those pages carry no publication date, so re-check the linked pages before you change a production policy.

Where the risk actually sits
An update is only compatible with a build if the native code inside that build matches what the update expects. Expo uses runtimeVersion as the compatibility boundary between the native code embedded in a build and the swappable update layer on top of it. If your change requires new native code, such as a new native module or a changed native configuration, you need a new build, and that build must carry a runtime value that differs appropriately from the old one. Expo warns that a stale runtime value can make an incompatible update appear compatible, which is the most common route to a crash on launch. Choose a runtime version policy before your first build
The runtime value is baked into every build, so decide how it will track native changes before development starts. Expo documents two approaches, and they make different trade-offs.

The appVersion policy
With appVersion, the runtime value follows your app version. Incrementing the app version gives you a distinct runtime. The deployment guide uses this as its recommended policy in that guide. The weakness is human: the policy only works if the team bumps the version whenever native code changes. A forgotten bump means an update that needs new native code can be delivered to builds that cannot run it.
The fingerprint policy
With the fingerprint approach, the runtime value is derived from the native-impacting content of the project, so native changes are captured automatically rather than depending on someone remembering to bump a number. The cost is more frequent builds, because more changes produce a new runtime. Expo’s runtime-version guide describes this option. Check the current Expo documentation for its maturity and whether it suits your project before you adopt it.

Before you publish: test the exact update
Most OTA incidents are compatibility problems that a realistic test would have caught. Expo’s deployment guide recommends the following sequence, which you can adapt to your own pipeline.

- Build a preview or staging app that uses the same runtime version as the production build you intend to update.
- Keep staging and production environment variables aligned, along with your code-signing configuration. Expo’s deployment guide recommends this explicitly. A difference here means you tested something other than what you will ship.
- Exercise the update on a realistic device, not only a simulator with fresh data. Install an earlier version, create the stored state real users will have, then apply the update. Persistent data written by older versions is where incompatibilities often surface.
- Promote the update you actually tested when your workflow allows it, rather than rebuilding from the same source and hoping the result matches.
Roll out gradually and watch the numbers
Publishing to everyone at once is faster. A staged percentage rollout limits how many installations receive a defect before you can see it. Expo’s runtime guidance says to cancel a rollout when errors rise, and to roll back if the update is already fully rolled out.

What to monitor
The EAS Update introduction lists the metrics available in EAS Update Insights. Watch these together rather than one at a time:
- Crash rates for the updated version compared with the version it replaces
- Install and launch counts, to confirm the update is reaching devices
- Unique users, to judge how much of your audience a problem would affect
- Payload size, which affects how long devices take to download the update
- The split between OTA and embedded usage, so you know which builds are running the new code
Expo’s documentation does not give a failure-rate benchmark, so the threshold for “elevated errors” is yours to set. Define it before the rollout starts, not during an incident.

Rolling back without making data worse
Rollback is the main recovery tool, but it is not a clean undo. Expo documents two targets, and neither reverses changes that an update has already made to persistent data.

You can republish a previously published update. This restores known working JavaScript to clients that receive it, which makes it the usual first choice when the older code is still compatible with the data users now hold.
Instruct clients to use the embedded update
You can instead tell clients to run the update embedded in their installed build. That returns them to code packaged with the binary they already have. It is a sound target when that embedded code is the last version you know works, but it carries the same data constraint.

Before either rollback, check persistent data and any migrations. If reverting could break data compatibility, the safe move is a tested fix published forward. If an older update would be unsafe for the data your users now have, do not roll back to it.

With code signing, the client verifies an update’s signature before applying it. That helps protect against tampering in transit or at the hosting layer. Unsigned updates depend on the trust path of the configured update delivery. End-to-end signing adds a check against a certificate that the build carries, but it comes with real requirements, documented in the code signing guide:

- Plan eligibility: EAS Update Code Signing is limited to Production or Enterprise plans.
- Build embedding: the certificate is embedded in the build, so the certificate is part of what you ship.
- Changes need a new build: changing the signing certificate or key configuration requires a new runtime and build, not an update.
- Key custody: restrict access to private signing keys and decide who can use them before you need to.
- Rotation: have a rotation procedure ready, because rotation triggers the build requirement above.
Signing is worth the overhead when the threat model includes tampering with updates in transit or at the host. If your main risk is a faulty update rather than a malicious one, runtime discipline and rollout controls address more of it.

Overrides and anti-bricking safeguards
Expo’s override documentation describes a configuration that points a build at a different production URL or adds headers, with anti-bricking safeguards disabled. Expo says this setup can remove the embedded fallback and prevent automatic recovery after a crash. The documented feature is intended for preview builds. Keep it out of production builds, and treat any change that disables those safeguards as a release risk in its own right.
What error recovery does not protect
Expo’s EAS Update error-recovery documentation states the limit plainly: “It is not a full safety net that protects your end users from the results of errors; in many cases, users will still see a crash.” Recovery features reduce damage. They do not prevent a broken update from reaching users, which is why the earlier controls matter more than the fallback.
