Mapped.earth’s interactive lighthouse map turns charted light characteristics into a browsable, animated view of coastlines and offshore lights. Popular Science reported on October 2, 2026, that the atlas covers nearly 76,000 lights across 29 coastal regions; its own project page currently describes a map of charted lights along New England.

What the lighthouse atlas shows

The online map, called “Lighthouses of the World” in Popular Science’s report, presents individual lights with details such as beacon height, light color, visibility distance, building height and rotational speed. Its animations are intended to represent each light’s reported pattern, using rotation or colored flashes.

Mapped.earth describes the project as “Every coastal light, on its real cycle.” Its site says charted New England lights sweep or flash at “the rhythm printed on the chart,” against night relief that shows the beams. These descriptions explain how the map is presented; they do not establish that every record is complete or accurate.

How many lights and regions are included?

Popular Science reported nearly 76,000 lights and 29 coastal regions on October 2, 2026. The publication says the atlas draws on open-source data collections from organizations including NOAA and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). It does not identify the datasets, their versions or update dates. NOAA and NGA should not be understood as creators, endorsers or maintainers of the Mapped.earth atlas.

The Mapped.earth project page confirms a live map of charted lights along New England, but does not confirm the worldwide total or the number of regions. Coverage may change as more coasts are charted.

What an individual light looks like on the map

As an example, Popular Science reports that Muskegon South Breakwater Lighthouse in Michigan has a visibility of eight nautical miles and flashes at six-second intervals rather than rotating. Those specifications are the publication’s example; the official project page does not independently confirm them.

Where to explore it

Visit Mapped.earth and open its “Lighthouses, live” project. The map is an online interactive experience, not a printed atlas. The project page invites visitors to explore its charted New England lights, while the broader global coverage figures are those reported by Popular Science.
