Only players with a physical microSD slot support this. Personal photos, videos, and music are a separate job, handled through a USB drive or a media server on your local network, and a microSD card does not do that job.
Start by checking whether your exact Roku has a microSD slot
Roku’s support article on expanding memory describes the feature this way: “Some older Roku streaming devices allow you to expand internal memory with a micro SD card, so you can install more apps from the Roku Streaming Store.” The phrase “some older” matters. The feature is not standard across the Roku lineup, and the support article does not provide a current model-by-model list.

Roku has also published a historical product comparison chart that shows microSD and USB ports varying from model to model. That chart is dated, so use it only to understand how ports differed, not to confirm what your player supports today. To check your device:

- Find the model number on the bottom or back of the player, or in the device’s settings under the system information screens.
- Compare that model against Roku’s current product and support information.
- Look at the player itself. If there is no microSD slot, a card cannot provide this form of expansion, no matter what card you buy.
Confirm this before buying anything. A card bought for a model without a slot is wasted money.

Choose the right microSD card
Roku’s stated recommendation is: “For best results, we recommend a Class 2 or greater micro SD card with a minimum of 2GB storage.” In practice, that means a card rated Class 2 or higher with at least 2 GB of capacity. Roku’s support article does not give a maximum capacity, so do not assume that larger cards work on your model unless the manufacturer or Roku’s current documentation for that model says so.
When shopping, search for terms such as “microSD card with at least 2 GB” and check the speed class printed on the card or in its listing. Confirm the card matches the minimum before checkout.

Install a microSD card, step by step
- Confirm that your player has a microSD slot (see the section above).
- Choose a card of Class 2 or higher with at least 2 GB of capacity.
- If the HDMI cable blocks access to the slot, unplug or move it. Insert the card into the slot until it clicks, then reconnect HDMI if you removed it.
- On screen, select Format when prompted, then select Continue. Wait for formatting to finish, then select OK. Formatting erases everything already on the card, so copy anything you need from it before you start.
- New app and channel installations now use the microSD storage. Installing the card is optional; the player works without it.
What happens when a card is removed or moved
Removing the card does not permanently delete your purchased or installed apps. However, any app that was stored on the card must be downloaded again before you can open it. Think of the card as a place where those apps live, not a permanent home for your account’s purchases.

Play personal photos, videos, and music
microSD expansion is for apps only. For personal media, Roku’s Media Player is the route, and it works in two ways.
Use a USB drive
Roku Media Player can play local photos, audio, and video from a USB drive on a Roku device that has a USB port. Roku’s Media Player article lists these USB file systems as supported: FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, exFAT, and HFS+. It also says that different partitions on a drive can be accessed.

- 32GB STORAGE CAPACITY: Provides convenient additional storage for documents, music, photos, and other everyday files on compatible USB-enabled devices.
- USB 3.0 CONNECTIVITY: The USB-A interface supports fast file transfers between compatible computers, notebooks, car stereos, and other devices.
- LOW-PROFILE PLUG-IN DESIGN: The compact, snag-free Nano drive is small enough to remain connected to a notebook or car stereo without getting in the way.
- BROAD SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY: Works with compatible Windows, macOS, and Linux systems for flexible file storage and sharing.
- COMPACT AND RELIABLE: The dime-sized design can be removed easily when needed for file sharing and is backed by a Verbatim Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Roku’s separate USB troubleshooting article lists a narrower set of file systems and notes that exFAT may not be supported in that context. Because the two pages differ, check the current guidance for your model before formatting a drive. If you need to reformat it, back up its contents first, because reformatting erases them.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Use a network media server
Roku Media Player can also access a media server on your local network, so your files can stay on a computer or network storage device rather than moving onto a drive that plugs into the player. Confirm that the server and your Roku are on the same network and that the media formats you use are supported.
If a USB drive is not recognized
- Check the file system. Make sure the drive uses one of the formats listed in Roku’s Media Player article, and be aware that the troubleshooting article lists fewer.
- Check the power. Some drives need more power than the Roku’s USB port supplies. If the drive came with a power adapter, connect it.
- Use a powered USB hub. If the drive has no adapter and still fails to work, Roku recommends a powered USB hub for drives that need more power.
Fix an “insufficient memory” message before buying storage
Messages such as “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app,” and “Insufficient memory” do not automatically mean your player needs more storage. Roku says these errors can reflect low storage or a problem with the internet connection. Work through these checks in order:
- Restart the player.
- Remove apps you no longer use. Highlight an app on the Home screen, press the Options button on your remote, and choose the removal option.
- Check that your internet connection is working and stable.
A microSD card helps with this error only if your player has a slot for one. On a player without a slot, removing unused apps and fixing the connection are the available options.

Quick Recap
Which storage path fits your goal
| Your goal | Device requirement | Storage path | What it does | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Install more Roku apps and channels | Roku player with a microSD slot (model-specific) | microSD card, Class 2 or greater, at least 2 GB | Expands the memory used for new app and channel installations | Formatting erases the card; not for personal media; no maximum capacity stated by Roku |
| Play personal photos, videos, and music | Roku device with a USB port, or a supported media server on the local network | USB drive or network media server, played through Roku Media Player | Plays local personal media; does not add app-install memory | File-system, media-format, and power compatibility vary; Roku’s pages list different file systems |
| Clear a low-memory or app error | Any Roku reporting the error | Restart, remove unused apps, check the network | Addresses low-storage and some connection causes | The error can have more than one cause; a microSD card helps only if the player has a slot |
