The detailed Linux Foundation ExamUI guide reviewed here applies to the Istio Certified Associate (ICA): it describes an exam console and remote desktop workstation. The Linux Foundation’s displayed interface mapping lists ICA but not JSNAD or JSNSD, so candidates should not assume the ICA walkthrough or its resource rules apply to either OpenJS exam.
Which exams does the documented ExamUI guide cover?
The Linux Foundation’s performance-based ExamUI guidance describes the environment for ICA. Its overview of exam interfaces maps ICA to the performance-based ExamUI group; JSNAD and JSNSD do not appear in that displayed mapping. That establishes what the page lists, not which software or interface JSNAD and JSNSD currently use. Check the instructions supplied for your own exam before test day.

What to expect in the ICA ExamUI
The documented ICA setup has two parts: exam-console functions and a remote-desktop virtual machine. The desktop includes a Linux terminal, Firefox for permitted resources, a virtual keyboard, and VSCodium, a graphical code editor. A ReadMe tab is displayed by default; review it for exam-specific instructions before beginning tasks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTour, timer, and alerts
The tour starts when the exam is first released. The timer starts after you complete or hide the tour. The guide says the interface displays alerts when 30, 15, and 5 minutes remain.

Whether you're reviewing at home, in transit, or right before the test, this cheat sheet will be your reliable companion.
Breaks and disconnects do not stop the clock. Requesting a break does not pause the timer. The guide also states: “The exam timer will not pause, and there is no way to ADD time back to the timer in the event of a system disconnect during your exam.” Plan on the documented timer continuing during either situation, and review the latest candidate instructions for your sitting.
Terminal, editor, and keyboard shortcuts
- Linux terminal: use Ctrl+Shift+C to copy and Ctrl+Shift+V to paste.
- Other desktop applications: use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V.
- VSCodium: its integrated terminal may be used, but installing extensions is disabled and prohibited.
- Special characters: use the virtual keyboard if your physical keyboard does not enter them reliably.
Browser and desktop controls
The Firefox browser includes Ctrl+F find-in-page and a translation extension. The guide also describes a Reset Desktop control for technical issues loading the desktop, a resizable content panel, and display settings to fit or reset the desktop. These are documented interface features, not a guarantee that a candidate can recover from every delivery or connection problem.
ICA permitted resources—and the boundary
For ICA, the Linux Foundation lists Istio Documentation, Istio Blog, Kubernetes Documentation, and task-specific material in the Quick Reference box as permitted resources, subject to the exam’s conditions. They are for independent work, not third-party assistance or research, and browsing is limited to materials accessible from within the exam VM. The guide allows documentation search functions but prohibits opening external search results. See the ExamUI guidance and the ICA exam page for the applicable instructions.

Do not carry this list over to JSNAD or JSNSD. The available OpenJS overview does not establish their current detailed desktop software, interface walkthrough, or permitted-resource list.

A Linux Foundation article published in 2020 describes both as online, remotely proctored, performance-based exams lasting two hours. Treat that as background information rather than a current exam handbook; confirm duration and delivery details in your current exam instructions.
| Exam | Focus described by Linux Foundation | Interface evidence |
|---|---|---|
| ICA | Istio certification; the reviewed ExamUI guide describes its performance-based workstation. | Listed in the performance-based ExamUI mapping; detailed guide available. |
| JSNAD | Node.js application development, with emphasis on Node.js core APIs. | Not listed in the reviewed interface mapping; current interface details are not established by the 2020 overview. |
| JSNSD | RESTful Node.js servers and services or microservices, with emphasis on security practices. | Not listed in the reviewed interface mapping; current interface details are not established by the 2020 overview. |
The 2020 article described a JSNAD preparation course offered in English at that time; it does not establish whether the course is currently available.
Quick Recap
What to verify before your exam
- Confirm the exam-specific interface and permitted resources in your current candidate instructions; do not infer them from another certification’s ExamUI page.
- For ICA, read the default ReadMe tab and permitted-resource rules before starting tasks.
- Allow for the timer to continue during breaks and system disconnects, as stated in the ICA ExamUI guidance.
