The most useful everyday internet tricks are simple habits: use unique passwords, turn on multifactor authentication, install updates, and pause before trusting messages or links. These steps help protect your accounts and devices without requiring specialist tools.
Secure your accounts first
Use a different, hard-to-guess password for every account
Choose long, random passwords and avoid reusing them. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends at least 16 characters in its 2024 online-safety tip sheet. A password manager can generate and store unique passwords, so you do not have to memorize each one.

Enable multifactor authentication
Multifactor authentication (MFA) asks for another form of verification in addition to your password. In each account’s security settings, look for MFA, two-step verification, or a similarly named option. Start with email and financial accounts, then enable it anywhere else it is offered. Options vary by service and may include an app-generated code, a text or email code, or biometrics. CISA’s advice is direct: “Use MFA on any site that offers it.” See CISA’s Secure Our World guidance for more information.

Turn on automatic updates for your operating system, browser, phone, and security software where available. Updates can address software flaws and security threats; CISA and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) both include them among their basic online-safety recommendations. If an update requires a restart, complete it rather than leaving it pending indefinitely. The FTC’s online protection checklist also recommends backing up important information on computers and phones, so it can be recovered if something goes wrong.

Pause before responding to suspicious messages
An unexpected message that creates urgency, asks for sensitive information, includes a suspicious attachment, or offers something unusually attractive may be phishing. Do not click its links, open its attachments, or reply with account details. Instead, contact the organization using a phone number or website you already know is genuine. Report suspected phishing through the channel available in your email or messaging service, then delete the message. Use public Wi-Fi with sensible checks
Public Wi-Fi is not automatically unsafe. The FTC says it is usually safe because encryption is widespread. Before entering information, check that the site uses HTTPS, and keep your device and accounts protected with the practices above. HTTPS encrypts the connection to a website; it does not prove that the website itself is honest. Scammers can operate encrypted fake sites, so inspect the web address before signing in or paying. Check your home router’s security setting
Open your router’s settings and find its Wi-Fi security or encryption option. The FTC recommends WPA3 Personal when available, or WPA2 Personal. If the router offers only older WPA or WEP, check whether a manufacturer software update adds WPA2 or WPA3. Consider replacing it only if an update cannot provide either supported option.
