Every Windows 11 Startup Folder Location (Current User and All Users)

Windows 11 has a Startup folder for the current user and a shared folder for all users. Open them with shell:startup and shell:common startup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 has two Startup folders: one for the signed-in user and one shared by everyone who uses the PC. Press Windows + R, enter shell:startup for the current user or shell:common startup for all users, then press Enter. These commands open the folders directly in File Explorer.

Which Windows 11 Startup folder should you open?

Choose based on who should be affected. A shortcut in the current-user folder applies to that user; one in the shared folder applies to all users of the device.

Folder Run command Location Applies to
Current user shell:startup %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup The signed-in user
All users shell:common startup %ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup All users of the device

Microsoft documents both locations and their commands in its Windows startup-app configuration guide. Using the command is usually simplest: Windows resolves the folder using the system’s configured paths.

How to open the current-user Startup folder

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type shell:startup.
  3. Press Enter. File Explorer opens the signed-in user’s Startup folder.

How to open the Startup folder for all users

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type shell:common startup.
  3. Press Enter. File Explorer opens the shared Startup folder.

How to add or remove an app using a Startup folder

Add a shortcut

Microsoft’s documented method is to open the Apps folder and the relevant Startup folder in separate File Explorer windows, then drag the app into the Startup folder:

  1. Press Windows + R, enter shell:appsfolder, and press Enter. Keep this File Explorer window open.
  2. Open another Run dialog with Windows + R, enter shell:startup or shell:common startup, and press Enter.
  3. Drag the desired app from the Apps folder window into the chosen Startup folder. This creates a shortcut there.

Remove a shortcut

Open the folder containing the startup shortcut and delete that link. This removes the folder-based startup entry.

Why an app may be missing from both folders

The folders show only startup entries stored there; an empty folder does not mean no apps will launch automatically. Windows also supports registered startup tasks and registry Run entries.

Check registered startup apps

  • In Settings, go to Apps > Startup and switch an app on to start it automatically at sign-in, or off to prevent that behavior.
  • Alternatively, open Task Manager and select its Startup apps tab. It also displays startup impact information.

Registry Run locations

Microsoft identifies these locations for startup entries:

  • All users: HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
  • All users, 32-bit application location: HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
  • Current user: HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

Registry editing is more advanced than managing a Startup-folder shortcut. Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences and advises backing up the registry before making changes.
