Yes, many smart TVs can still be useful without internet: you can often watch antenna or cable channels and use devices connected by HDMI. Streaming apps and most internet-dependent features won’t work offline, and whether you can skip internet during setup depends on the TV. Check the support instructions for your exact model before disconnecting it.
What can you watch on a smart TV without internet?
Offline viewing depends on an available signal or a device connected directly to the TV. The two most practical sources are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Live TV: An antenna can receive over-the-air broadcasts if reception is available where you live and your TV supports the required tuner. Some TVs also accept a cable or satellite signal; the provider’s box may need its own connection or service.
- HDMI devices: A game console, disc player, cable or satellite box, or other HDMI source can display content without the TV itself being online. The connected device may have separate connectivity requirements.
Roku lists antenna or cable live TV and HDMI devices as offline options, while TCL lists cable, satellite, a TV tuner, an antenna, and external inputs. Those lists describe supported input paths, not a guarantee of reception, channel availability, or access to every feature on every model. Roku’s TV overview is not the relevant support source; see its unlinked-mode instructions and Roku TV guide, and TCL’s Basic TV Mode instructions.

What stops working when the TV is offline?
Built-in streaming apps need internet access, as do most services that fetch content or information online. Depending on the platform and setup, offline use may also limit or remove:

- App downloads and app-store access
- Voice search or voice-assistant controls
- Phone or tablet casting
- Account-linked platform features
- Software and security updates
An external streaming device can bring streaming apps to a TV whose own network connection is disabled, but it is not an offline workaround: the streaming device still needs internet and has its own account, privacy settings, and data practices.
Can you set up a TV without internet?
There is no universal answer. Setup rules differ by brand, model, and software version, and some TVs that cannot skip online activation may still work offline after initial setup.

| TV platform or mode | Initial setup | Offline sources and limits |
|---|---|---|
| TCL Google TV Basic TV Mode | TCL says this mode can be used without internet or a Google account. | Supports live TV through cable, satellite, TV tuner, or antenna, plus HDMI and other inputs. Google account sign-in, Google Play library, app installation, Google Assistant search/control, phone or tablet casting, and software/security updates are unavailable in this mode without internet. See TCL’s instructions. |
| Some Roku TV systems in unlinked mode | Some systems offer “Connect to the Internet Later”; Roku says this option is not available on all systems. | Antenna or cable live TV and HDMI sources remain usable, but Roku streaming services are unavailable while unlinked. See Roku’s unlinked-mode instructions. |
| Roku-branded TVs | Roku says an internet connection is required to complete initial setup. | After setup, Roku says the TV can be disconnected and used for antenna live TV or HDMI playback. This is distinct from skipping online setup. See Roku’s TV guide. |
| Other platforms, including LG webOS, Samsung Tizen, Vizio, and Amazon Fire TV | Requirements vary by model and firmware; consult the manufacturer’s instructions. | Available offline inputs and disabled features vary. RTINGS provides examples across platforms, but notes that interfaces differ by model and firmware: How to use a smart TV offline. |
Menu wording and setup flows can change. Before declining an account prompt or resetting a TV, check the current support page for the exact model and software. If you have already completed setup, disconnecting the network may be enough to use local inputs; it does not turn streaming apps into offline services.

- Confirm the setup rule. Find the TV’s model number and read its manufacturer support instructions. Check whether initial setup requires internet or an account, and whether an offline or unlinked mode is available.
- Choose a source. Connect an antenna for over-the-air channels, or attach a compatible HDMI source such as a console or disc player. For an antenna, check local reception conditions and tuner compatibility; an indoor antenna is not suitable for every location.
- Complete any required activation. If the manufacturer requires internet for initial setup, you may need to connect temporarily before using the TV offline. Roku says this is required for Roku-branded TVs, while its unlinked option is available only on some systems.
- Disconnect the TV from the network. Use the TV’s network settings to disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet. Exact menu names vary, so follow the TV’s support instructions rather than assuming a universal path.
- Select the input or live-TV source. Use the remote’s Input/Source control for HDMI, or open the TV/live-channel screen for antenna or cable. Scan for channels if the TV prompts you and your signal source requires it.
What does offline mode mean for privacy and updates?
A TV with no internet route cannot send data to its manufacturer over that route while it is disconnected. That is narrower than saying offline setup erases stored information or that the TV collects nothing. RTINGS notes uncertainty about what may be stored locally and what can happen when a TV reconnects. Its offline-use guide discusses those limitations.

Roku documents viewing-data collection through Smart TV Experience, including automatic content recognition (ACR) from TV inputs when the feature is enabled, and says streaming-channel usage may also be collected or shared. Review the available controls in Roku’s Smart TV Experience information. If you connect a streaming box, that device is another online platform with separate privacy controls.
There is also a maintenance tradeoff: TCL says Basic TV Mode does not receive software or security updates without internet. If you periodically reconnect the TV to update it, review its privacy settings and account choices rather than assuming an offline period removed previously stored data.

Offline mode is not the same as local-network access
“Offline” can mean no internet connection, no Wi-Fi at all, or simply that a service is operating during an internet outage. Those are different situations. Tablo’s outage mode, for example, requires power and a working local Wi-Fi network for access through network-connected apps. It can restore some antenna viewing and playback of completed recordings, while certain functions remain unavailable. See Tablo’s outage-mode instructions and its internet requirements.
