Campaign is the best starting point for most new players because it teaches the basic four-player cooperative journey. The other modes change the opponents, information available, objective, pace or ruleset.

The eight official Left 4 Dead 2 modes at a glance
| Mode | Players | Main objective | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Human co-op, with an AI option | Complete connected chapters and reach the safe room or finale | First-time players and cooperative PvE |
| Single Player | One human player with computer-controlled teammates | Complete a campaign | Learning maps and systems alone |
| Realism | Human co-op or solo with bots | Complete a campaign with fewer survivor aids and higher difficulty | Experienced PvE players seeking a harsher run |
| Versus | Two human teams | Outscore the opposing team through campaign rounds | Competitive mastery of both sides |
| Realism Versus | Two human teams | Play Versus with Realism restrictions | High-difficulty competitive groups |
| Scavenge | Two human teams | Recover and use the most gas cans | Short, objective-focused competition |
| Survival | Co-op | Hold one location for as long as possible | Compact challenge sessions and practice |
| Mutations | Varies by mutation | Follow the special rules of the selected mutation | Variety, experimentation and community-made rules |
Valve identifies these as eight official modes. Steam Workshop listings also commonly group related experiences under Co-op and Single Player labels, but those labels are categories rather than additional official modes.
Campaign: the standard cooperative journey
What you do
Campaign is the baseline Left 4 Dead 2 experience. A team of up to four Survivors moves through connected chapters, fights the Infected, manages limited resources and reaches the next safe room. Each campaign ends with a finale rather than simply stopping at an arbitrary checkpoint.

Why it is the recommended starting point
Campaign introduces the game’s central rhythm in the order you need it: move as a group, search for supplies, respond to threats, recover from mistakes and make it to the next safe room. You learn maps while still having the normal survivor information and recovery aids available. Valve specifically suggests that new players start with Campaign mode.
When to choose it
- Choose Campaign when nobody in the group knows the game well.
- Use it to learn a campaign’s route before entering a competitive mode.
- Return to it when you want a social PvE session rather than a score chase.
The mode is cooperative, but it still rewards coordination. Staying together, sharing resources and agreeing on when to move matter more than rushing ahead individually.
Single Player: Campaign with computer teammates
How it differs from Campaign
Single Player uses Campaign’s chapter structure and objective, but the other Survivors are controlled by the game. You still travel through the campaign and reach the safe room or finale; the difference is that you are not relying on human teammates for communication or decisions.
What it is good for
Single Player is useful for learning map layouts, item locations and the basic flow of a chapter without waiting for a group. It also gives you a low-pressure way to become familiar with the controls and the demands of moving as a team.
Its limitation
Computer teammates do not reproduce the communication and judgment of a coordinated human group. A run that feels manageable with bots can demand very different timing when other players are making independent choices. Treat Single Player as a map-and-systems tutorial, not a complete substitute for social co-op.
Realism: Campaign with fewer aids and higher pressure
The core change
Realism is a harder version of Campaign. Valve describes it as Campaign with some player aids removed and the difficulty heightened. The route and broad completion goal remain the same, but you receive less information and have less forgiving recovery during a mistake.

What the restrictions change
Because normal survivor aids are reduced, the team has to communicate more deliberately. Players must pay closer attention to one another’s position, make safer route decisions and avoid splitting up. Recovering from a downed or isolated teammate is more complicated, so a small error can become a failed chapter instead of a brief delay.
Who should play it
- Play Realism after you can consistently complete Campaign chapters.
- Choose it when your group wants PvE difficulty without another human team attacking you.
- Use it to practice communication, navigation and conservative resource management.
Realism is not a separate story or map set. It is a rules adjustment that makes the familiar Campaign structure less forgiving.
Versus: survivors against player-controlled Special Infected
The two sides
Versus is the main asymmetric competitive mode. One human team plays the Survivors while another human team controls the Special Infected. Teams switch sides, so a complete match tests both parts of the game: advancing through the route as a Survivor and creating well-timed attacks as the Infected.
How a round is evaluated
The Survivor side tries to execute the campaign route and make progress. The Infected side tries to interrupt that progress through coordinated attacks. After the sides change, each team gets a chance to perform both roles. The result is a comparison of how far and how effectively the teams progress rather than a single one-sided attack.

What makes it harder than Campaign
Human opponents are unpredictable. They can wait for a vulnerable moment, combine their abilities and punish a separated player. As an Infected player, you also have to learn timing: attacking alone usually gives the Survivor team an opportunity to recover, while a coordinated strike can force a costly mistake.
Versus is best approached after learning the maps in Campaign. New players can otherwise spend more time confused by routes and attack timing than improving their competitive decisions.

Realism Versus: competitive play with Realism restrictions
What it combines
Realism Versus combines Versus’s two human teams and side switching with the survivor-aid restrictions of Realism. You still compete through campaign rounds, but the Survivor side receives less information and has harsher recovery conditions.
Why the mode is demanding
The mode removes some of the safety net that helps a team respond to an Infected attack. Communication, positioning and timing therefore matter on both sides. Survivors must navigate and recover with less information; Infected players can exploit the uncertainty more effectively than in standard Versus.

Scavenge: a gas-can scoring contest
The objective
Scavenge is a round-based competitive mode built around gas cans. The Survivor team recovers cans and uses them, while the opposing human Infected team tries to stop that work. The score is based on how many cans the team recovers.
How it feels different from Versus
Versus asks teams to contest progress through campaign routes. Scavenge concentrates the contest on a clear collection objective and short rounds. Survivors must decide how to move between cans, protect the player carrying one and keep enough team strength to finish the interaction. Infected players focus on interrupting those moments and forcing the Survivors to lose time or control.
When Scavenge is a good choice
- Pick Scavenge when your group wants a measurable objective instead of a full campaign run.
- Use it to practice defending a task under pressure.
- Choose it for sessions where several short competitive rounds are preferable to a longer route.
Do not judge Scavenge by campaign completion. Its win condition is the gas-can total, not reaching a finale.

Survival: hold one location for as long as possible
The format
Survival is cooperative, but it does not send the team through a connected series of chapters. Players defend one location against an unending attack and try to survive as long as possible.
The skills it tests
Positioning, crowd control and timing matter more than route knowledge. The team must select defensible positions, decide when to spend useful resources and keep its formation intact as pressure increases. There is no safe-room journey to reset the situation; the challenge is maintaining control of the same area for the duration of the attempt.
Who should choose it
Survival works well for a short challenge session, for practicing how a team handles escalating pressure, or for players who want a clear endurance target rather than a multi-chapter story. It is also a useful change of pace after several Campaign runs.
Mutations: special rule sets, not one single mode
How to understand the label
Mutations are variations built from the other modes. Each mutation can alter weapons, enemies, team rules or win conditions, so “Mutations” describes a family of rule sets rather than one fixed experience.
Official and community variations
Official mutations and community-created Workshop content can present very different challenges. One may change what equipment is available; another may alter enemy behavior or redefine how a round is won. Read the selected mutation’s rules before starting instead of assuming that it follows standard Campaign, Versus or Survival expectations.
When to play one
Choose a mutation when your group already understands the base mode and wants a deliberate twist. Mutations are excellent for variety, but they are less suitable for teaching the fundamentals because the special rules can hide which skills transfer to ordinary play.
Best Value
The four differences that explain every mode
1. Who is playing
Campaign, Realism and Survival are cooperative experiences, with Single Player offering the same Campaign structure alongside bots. Versus, Realism Versus and Scavenge put two human teams against each other. Mutations can use either structure depending on the selected rules.
Recommended Free Tools
2. What counts as success
Campaign, Single Player and Realism ask you to finish a campaign. Versus and Realism Versus compare team performance through campaign rounds. Scavenge measures recovered gas cans. Survival measures how long the team can hold its location. A mutation may replace any of these goals with its own condition.
3. How much information and recovery help you receive
Standard Campaign rules provide the normal survivor aids. Realism removes some of them and raises the difficulty; Realism Versus applies the same restriction inside competitive play. This is why those modes require more communication even when the map objective appears familiar.
4. How long the pressure lasts
Campaign-style modes use route progression through chapters. Survival compresses the pressure into one location and an unending attack. Scavenge uses short, score-based rounds. Versus combines route progression with repeated side switches, while Mutations can change the pace entirely.
Which mode should a beginner choose?
- Start with Campaign. Play with friends if possible; otherwise use Single Player to learn the controls and map flow.
- Complete enough chapters to understand the basic loop. Learn how your group moves, shares resources and reaches a safe room before adding harsher rules.
- Try Survival for a compact practice session. It isolates positioning and crowd-control decisions without requiring a full campaign.
- Move to Realism when normal Campaign feels predictable. Expect to communicate more and accept that recovery is less forgiving.
- Enter Versus after learning the maps. You will need both route knowledge and an understanding of how human-controlled Infected can disrupt a team.
- Try Scavenge for objective-focused competition. Its gas-can goal is easier to understand than a full competitive campaign.
- Leave Realism Versus and unusual Mutations for later. They are most rewarding when the underlying mode is already familiar.
Common mistakes when selecting a mode
- Choosing Realism as a first tutorial: the reduced aids can make basic navigation and recovery unnecessarily confusing.
- Assuming Versus is simply harder Campaign: the opposing team is human, and you must learn both Survivor execution and Infected timing.
- Expecting Scavenge to reward map completion: its score is tied to recovered gas cans.
- Expecting Survival to teach campaign routes: it is a fixed-location endurance test, so its main lessons are positioning and timing.
- Treating every Mutation as interchangeable: the rules can change substantially from one mutation to another.
- Using Workshop labels as population statistics: Co-op and Single Player are practical categories, not authoritative counts of active players or queue sizes.
A practical mode-selection checklist
Before starting a lobby, answer four questions:
- Do we want cooperation or competition? Choose Campaign, Realism, Survival or a cooperative Mutation for teamwork; choose Versus, Realism Versus or Scavenge for two-team competition.
- Do we want to travel or hold? Pick a Campaign-based mode to reach an endpoint, or Survival to defend one location.
- Do we want a normal information level? Use Campaign or Versus for the standard aids; use Realism or Realism Versus when the group wants reduced assistance.
- Do we want a fixed objective or experimentation? Scavenge gives you gas cans and a clear score; Mutations give you a variable ruleset that must be read before play.
Those answers identify the mode without relying on popularity assumptions. Valve has published the eight-mode structure, but there is no authoritative current figure for population, queue size or popularity by mode, so mode choice should be based on the experience your group wants rather than an unverified ranking.
How the modes fit into Left 4 Dead 2’s larger structure
Left 4 Dead 2 launched with five expansive campaigns in 2009. The modes are different ways to use that campaign foundation: Campaign and Single Player teach the route, Realism changes the assistance level, Versus and Realism Versus turn the route into a two-team contest, Scavenge extracts a gas-can objective, and Survival removes route completion in favor of endurance. Mutations and Workshop content then build additional rule variations on top of those foundations.
