Before installing a new hard drive in a NAS, run its SMART extended (long) self-test and review the result in the drive’s self-test log. Western Digital describes the extended test as longer and more thorough than the short test. A pass is a useful incoming screen—not a guarantee of future reliability or a prediction of the drive’s lifespan.
Run the SMART extended self-test
Use the drive maker’s utility or your NAS’s storage-management interface to start the drive’s extended or long SMART self-test. The exact menu names and available options depend on the drive and NAS. Let the test finish, then check the self-test log for its result. Western Digital’s SMART guidance calls the extended test “a longer and more thorough version of the short test.” Western Digital’s SMART guidance

The test is a screening check, not a certification. The manufacturer documentation cited here does not establish a universally required burn-in duration or show that a particular sequence of stress tests predicts long-term reliability. Do not treat a pass as proof that the disk cannot fail.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Interpret SMART results in the drive’s context
SMART is not one universal scoring system. Drive makers define attributes and thresholds, and raw values may be processed using vendor-specific logic. Consult the manufacturer’s explanation for the exact drive instead of assuming a raw count has the same meaning across brands or models. Western Digital’s SMART guidance

- If the extended test passes: keep the log result as a baseline and continue with the compatibility checks below.
- If the test reports an error or SMART indicates failure risk: protect any data on the disk and investigate replacement; do not treat the drive as cleared for service. Western Digital advises backing up and replacing a drive when a failure is reported.
Check the drive against your NAS and workload
A successful self-test says nothing about whether a drive is the right model for your system. Before installation, verify these details for the exact drive and NAS combination:
- Compatibility: check the NAS maker’s current compatibility list or recommendations. Western Digital specifically directs customers to consult the NAS vendor. Western Digital’s WD Red guidance
- Recording method: determine whether the drive uses CMR or SMR if your file system and workload make that distinction important. WD identifies Red Plus and Red Pro as CMR and recommends those models for ZFS systems; this is guidance for those WD product families, not a blanket verdict on every SMR drive or file system. Western Digital’s WD Red guidance
- Workload rating: compare your expected annual host reads, writes and verification activity with the rating for that exact model. In the cited Seagate NAS HDD manual, the covered family is rated below 180 TB per year; the manual warns that exceeding the rating may affect reliability. That figure is not a universal NAS-drive limit. Seagate NAS +SRS HDD Product Manual, revision K
- Warranty and support: confirm coverage for the model and serial number in the market where it was purchased. Seagate’s warranty lookup, for example, asks for the serial number, model or part number, and country of purchase. Warranty terms are not interchangeable across models or markets.
What manufacturer qualification claims do—and don’t—tell you
Some manufacturers describe testing performed on a product line, but those descriptions are not test results for an individual retail unit. Western Digital says its Red Pro drives are shipped with extended thermal-cycle burn-in testing. That process statement does not make an incoming SMART check unnecessary or guarantee that a particular drive will remain reliable. Western Digital’s WD Red guidance

Synology says its Plus Series undergoes more than 500,000 cumulative hours of stress testing. Its product page also lists 3.5-inch SATA models from 2 TB through 20 TB, CMR recording, 24/7 positioning, compatibility and stress testing, and a three-year limited warranty. These are Synology’s series-level statements, not findings about an individual drive; check the current model and NAS compatibility details before buying. The page says the warranty period begins on the purchase date shown on the receipt and cautions that MTBF is a statistical measure, not an estimate of a product’s actual life. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the test as one part of qualification
The practical sequence is straightforward: verify that the exact model suits your NAS and workload, run its SMART extended self-test, and review the log before relying on it. If the test reports a problem, protect data and pursue replacement rather than installing the disk as though it had passed. Keep the self-test result as a baseline, but plan for monitoring and backups: no pre-installation test can remove the risk of later failure.
