The CH-53 is a family of helicopters, not one aircraft with interchangeable letter codes. The Marine Corps’ CH-53A, CH-53D, CH-53E and CH-53K are successive heavy-lift aircraft; the Navy’s MH-53E specializes in mine countermeasures and shipboard delivery; and the Air Force’s MH-53H/J/M Pave Low helicopters served in long-range rescue and special operations. Today, the Marine Corps is transitioning from the CH-53E to the CH-53K. The earlier Marine D model and the Air Force Pave Low series are historical.
What is the CH-53 used for?
At the family’s core is heavy vertical lift: carrying troops, equipment and supplies where fixed-wing aircraft or ground transport cannot do the job. For the Marine Corps, that means supporting amphibious assault, moving cargo from ship to shore, and sustaining forces ashore. Other CH-53-derived aircraft were adapted for different service needs, including Navy airborne mine countermeasures and Air Force long-range combat search and rescue.

The prefix helps identify the branch and mission, but it does not make the aircraft a simple version of the same configuration. The CH-53E and CH-53K are Marine assault-support transports; the Navy MH-53E is a Sea Dragon with a mine-warfare role; and the Air Force Pave Low aircraft were specialized for low-level, long-range operations.

Marine Corps Sea Stallions: CH-53A and CH-53D
CH-53A Sea Stallion
The CH-53A entered Marine Corps service in October 1964, becoming the first major Marine Sea Stallion version. It carried heavy battlefield loads, including vehicles and artillery, and helped resupply remote outposts during the Vietnam era, according to the National Naval Aviation Museum’s Navy history.

CH-53D Sea Stallion
The CH-53D improved performance in hot weather and at high altitude. Its folding main and tail rotors made it more practical to stow and operate aboard ships. The same Navy history gives a maximum troop-carrying figure of 55 for the D model, versus 38 in one CH-53A configuration; these are historical configuration figures, not recommended loads for every mission. NAVAIR announced the Marine Corps’ retirement of the D model in 2012.
CH-53E Super Stallion: Marine assault support
The CH-53E carries Marines, equipment and supplies in support of amphibious assault and operations ashore. It can move cargo from amphibious warfare ships to shore and support logistics and sustainment after a force has landed. NAVAIR’s fact sheet, last updated in 2021, states a capability of carrying 16 tons of cargo from an amphibious warfare ship and delivering it 50 miles away. That is the fact sheet’s stated capability, not a guarantee that the load and distance apply under every operating condition.

Fleet-size figures need a date attached. A U.S. Navy fact file updated September 23, 2021, reported 136 CH-53Es in operation. An undated NAVAIR product page gives an inventory of 133, but without a clear as-of date. Neither figure establishes the current operational count. NAVAIR described a rolling reset effort in 2019 intended to extend the fleet’s service life through 2032; that program statement was not a promise that every aircraft would remain operational until then.

The CH-53K is the Marine Corps’ new-build heavy-lift successor to the CH-53E. Its central job remains moving Marines, heavy equipment and supplies from ship to shore and supporting operations ashore. It is not simply an E model with a higher load figure: the K is a successor aircraft with its own program and performance specifications.

NAVAIR lists two distinct payload measures: an intended 27,000-pound payload at a 110-nautical-mile mission radius under Navy high/hot conditions, and a 36,000-pound maximum external lift capability. These are not interchangeable figures or a statement that the maximum lift can be carried at that radius and in those conditions.
The Marine Corps declared initial operational capability in April 2022. NAVAIR reported in November 2025 that the aircraft had entered full-rate production in November 2022. In the 2026 Marine Aviation Plan, the first CH-53K Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) detachment is expected to change operational control in FY26, preparing for its first operational deployment in FY27. That deployment is planned, not a completed event.

Navy MH-53E Sea Dragon: mine countermeasures and shipboard delivery
The Navy MH-53E has a different specialization from the Marine assault-support helicopters. NAVAIR identifies its primary missions as airborne mine countermeasures and Navy heavy lift, including vertical onboard delivery (VOD). VOD means delivering cargo to a ship by helicopter. The available mission descriptions establish those roles but do not provide a current fleet count.

Air Force MH-53 Pave Low: historical rescue and special operations
The Air Force Pave Low line grew from the HH-53, an aircraft related to the CH-53 family. The Air Force used the MH-53 for long-range combat search and rescue, then adapted it for special operations. Its low-level, long-range missions included infiltration, exfiltration and rescue.
MH-53H, MH-53J and MH-53M
The MH-53H evolved into the MH-53J and then the MH-53M. These designations mark the progression of the Air Force’s specialized Pave Low aircraft, rather than Marine heavy-lift models. The Pave Low series is historical, not a current U.S. service use.
How to distinguish the CH-53E, CH-53K and MH-53E
- CH-53E: Marine Corps heavy transport for amphibious assault, ship-to-shore movement and sustainment.
- CH-53K: Marine Corps successor intended for the same broad heavy-lift mission; its first MEU deployment is planned for FY27 under the 2026 Marine Aviation Plan.
- MH-53E: Navy aircraft whose primary missions are airborne mine countermeasures and vertical onboard delivery.
In short, the CH-53 family name points to related aircraft, not a single shared mission. The service prefix and variant designation matter: they distinguish Marine assault support from Navy mine warfare and the Air Force’s now-historical Pave Low rescue and special-operations role.
