To use a Wi-Fi extender with a wired connection, the exact model and hardware revision must support Access Point (AP) mode with Ethernet as its uplink. Connect the extender to your router or upstream network by Ethernet, select AP mode in its setup interface, then configure Wi-Fi. An Ethernet jack alone does not guarantee this feature.
Check that your extender supports Ethernet-fed AP mode
In its usual repeater or range-extender mode, a device receives an existing Wi-Fi signal and rebroadcasts it. In AP mode, a supported extender instead connects to the existing network over Ethernet and provides Wi-Fi to nearby devices. The wired connection replaces the extender-to-router wireless link; it does not mean every device with an Ethernet port can use Ethernet as its uplink.

Before setup, check the label for the exact model and hardware revision, then confirm in the manufacturer’s specifications or manual that it supports both AP mode and an Ethernet uplink in that mode. Feature support can differ across models and revisions. NETGEAR’s instructions apply to listed extender families, TP-Link’s guidance is conditional on a supported device, and ASUS notes that features vary by model. NETGEAR’s AP setup instructions were updated July 7, 2025; TP-Link’s AP-mode guide was updated August 13, 2026; and ASUS’s range-extender instructions were updated July 22, 2024.
Connect the extender to your network
Choose a location where the Ethernet cable from the router or suitable upstream LAN can reach and where nearby devices need Wi-Fi. There is no universal placement formula in the cited setup guidance; the practical requirement is a usable wired connection to the existing network.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Connect Ethernet: Plug one end of the cable into a LAN port on the main router, or another suitable upstream network device. Connect the other end to the extender’s Ethernet port. NETGEAR specifically directs users to a router LAN port; TP-Link describes connecting to the router or another upstream device.
- Power on the extender: Wait for it to start, then open the setup interface using the method documented for that model. Depending on the device, this may mean connecting to its temporary Wi-Fi network, using a companion app, or opening a web interface.
- Select AP mode: If setup prompts you to choose an operating mode, select Access Point. If the extender is already configured, find the operation-mode setting and switch it to AP mode. Follow any prompts and allow the device to restart if requested.
- Set Wi-Fi details: Choose a Wi-Fi name and password if the setup process offers those options. The right naming approach depends on your home network and how you want to manage the added access point; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one choice as best for everyone.
- Reconnect and check: Connect a phone or laptop to the resulting Wi-Fi network and confirm that it can access your ordinary home network and the Internet.
Find the right setup controls for your model
Menus are model-specific, so use the manual for your exact hardware revision rather than assuming a path will match. Manufacturer examples include:
- NETGEAR: Its example uses the NETGEAR_EXT network and the installation assistant. Follow the prompts in the official instructions for a supported model.
- TP-Link: In the Tether app, the example path is More > Operation mode. In the web interface, it is Advanced > System Tools > Operation Mode. These paths are examples, not universal menus. The TP-Link AP-mode guide also covers optional Wi-Fi name and password changes. A TP-Link user guide for RE505X V1, RE603X V1, and RE605X V1 provides a model-specific example.
- ASUS: Use the setup procedure for the exact range-extender model; ASUS cautions that feature availability differs by model.
Understand what changes in AP mode
The main distinction is the uplink: AP mode uses Ethernet, while a wireless repeater uses Wi-Fi to reach the router. A wired uplink avoids depending on a wireless connection between the router and the added access point, but the cited manufacturer setup material does not establish a universal speed increase, coverage percentage, or guarantee of seamless roaming.

Changing modes can also change which network functions the device provides. ASUS says firewall, IP sharing, and NAT functions are disabled by default on the range extender covered by its AP-mode instructions. This is model-specific guidance, not a rule for every extender. TP-Link documents unavailable features in Deco AP mode, but Deco is a separate product category; those limitations should not be generalized to range extenders. See TP-Link’s Deco AP-mode FAQ for that product category.
If your extender does not support AP mode
If the manual does not explicitly document Ethernet-fed AP mode for your model and revision, do not assume its Ethernet port can serve as the network uplink. Consider one of these alternatives:

ASUS ROG’s router AP setup page says Ethernet RJ45 cables used to connect network devices “should not exceed 100 meters.” Treat that as the limit stated on that support page, not as a recommendation to run a cable the full distance in a home installation. See ASUS ROG’s AP setup instructions.
