Ethernet connects devices to a local network over a cable; Wi-Fi connects them wirelessly using radio and the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. They are not competing versions of the same connection: a home router can provide Wi-Fi to phones while using Ethernet cables for a computer, television, or other network equipment.
What Ethernet and Wi-Fi mean
Ethernet is a family of wired local-network technologies associated with IEEE 802.3. A device uses a physical connection, typically a cable from its Ethernet port to a router or network switch. IEEE describes Ethernet as a wired LAN technology in its Ethernet overview.

Wi-Fi is wireless local-area networking based on IEEE 802.11 standards. Devices exchange data by radio within the coverage area of a wireless access point, commonly built into a home router. IEEE describes the 802.11 family in its Wi-Fi technology and standards overview and explains the radio-based nature of a wireless LAN in its Wireless LAN overview.
How they differ in everyday use
| Factor | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Connection medium | A physical cable connects the device to network equipment. | Radio connects the device to a wireless access point. |
| Mobility | The device is tethered to the cable while connected. | A device can move within usable wireless coverage. |
| Practical fit | Often convenient for a stationary device when a cable can be run. | Useful for phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices used in different locations. |
| What determines performance | Equipment capabilities, supported link rates, cable and network conditions. | Wi-Fi standard, equipment, distance, obstacles, interference, and other radio conditions. |
These are different ways to reach the local network, not separate kinds of internet service. The router may connect to the internet and then carry local traffic to wired and wireless devices alike.

Is Ethernet faster than Wi-Fi?
Not automatically. Ethernet specifications cover different media and link speeds; the IEEE 802.3-2022 standard covers operating speeds from 1 Mb/s to 400 Gb/s, a standards scope rather than a claim about consumer equipment or measured internet performance. See the IEEE 802.3-2022 standard. Wi-Fi capabilities also vary by standard and radio conditions. Neither the word “Ethernet” nor “Wi-Fi” alone tells you the speed or latency you will experience.
For a meaningful comparison, check the capabilities of the router or switch and the device, then measure performance on your own local network. Internet speed tests also depend on factors beyond the local link, including the service plan, network load, and the remote server. A cable by itself does not guarantee a faster internet connection.

When to use each connection
Choose Ethernet when a cable is practical
- Consider it for a stationary computer, game console, or television near the router or a switch.
- It provides a physical connection without relying on the Wi-Fi radio conditions at that device’s location.
- Before buying a cable, check that both endpoints have compatible Ethernet ports and that the cable length and category suit the equipment. A USB-to-Ethernet adapter may be an option for a device without a built-in port; compatibility and achievable speed depend on the computer, adapter, and network equipment.
Choose Wi-Fi when mobility matters
- It suits phones, tablets, and laptops that move around the home or lack an Ethernet port.
- Its usable coverage depends on the access point’s reach and radio conditions where the device is used.
- If a connection is unreliable, location and wireless conditions matter; the label “Wi-Fi” by itself does not guarantee consistent performance in every room.
Use both in one home
Ethernet and Wi-Fi are complementary. Ethernet Alliance describes wireless access as synergistic with Ethernet, and home networking equipment commonly combines Wi-Fi access with Ethernet connectivity. A practical arrangement is to keep portable devices on Wi-Fi and wire stationary devices where running a cable is convenient. See the Ethernet Alliance explanation of Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

What to check before comparing your setup
- Whether the device stays in one place or needs to move.
- Whether a cable can be routed conveniently between the device and router or switch.
- Which ports and link rates the device and network equipment support.
- How strong and reliable Wi-Fi is at the device’s actual location.
- Local-network speed and latency measured under the conditions that matter to you.
