Ethernet is usually the better choice for lower, steadier latency between your gaming device and home router. But it cannot guarantee a lower ping to a game server: the rest of the route, server location and other network conditions still matter. Wi-Fi can work well when its signal is strong and the local wireless environment is not congested. If your connection has ping spikes, packet loss or instability, testing Ethernet is a practical way to find out whether Wi-Fi is the weak link.
What Ethernet can—and cannot—change
Your game’s ping reflects the round trip between your device and the game server. Ethernet replaces only the local connection between your device and your router; it does not control the full path across your internet provider’s network to a remote server. A more consistent local link can help, but the game-server ping may stay much the same if the delay is elsewhere.

Think of the connection as a route with several sections. The device first connects to your home network, then traffic passes through your router and internet provider before reaching the game server. Ethernet changes the first, local section. It does not move the server closer, change the route your provider takes, or fix conditions at the game service. That is why the result depends on where the problem is occurring: replacing an unstable wireless link can help, but replacing a link that was already behaving well may make little visible difference to the server ping.
That distinction explains why there is no reliable universal figure for how many milliseconds a player will save by switching. A result depends on the particular Wi-Fi signal, home network, internet route and server. The reviewed sources do not establish a controlled, broadly applicable number for every gamer. Claims that switching always saves a fixed number of milliseconds overstate what can be predicted for an individual home.

RTINGS characterizes Ethernet as consistently lower-latency and more stable than Wi-Fi in its comparison. HP’s online gaming internet-speed guidance likewise says: “A wired Ethernet connection delivers lower, more consistent latency compared to Wi-Fi by avoiding wireless interference and network congestion.” These statements describe the general advantage of a wired local link, not a promise about every game or connection. The practical question is not only which technology tends to be more predictable, but whether the wireless segment is causing a problem in your setup.
Ethernet and Wi-Fi compared for gaming
| Factor | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Local latency consistency | Usually the more predictable option because the device-to-router link does not depend on a wireless signal. | Can be adequate, but results depend on signal conditions and activity on the wireless network. |
| Spikes and interference | A cable avoids wireless signal interference and shared-channel conditions on the local link. | Distance, obstructions, nearby access points, Bluetooth and other devices sharing the network or channel may contribute to instability. |
| Game-server ping | May improve if the local Wi-Fi link is causing delay or instability; does not guarantee a lower ping to the server. | May perform well when local wireless conditions are good. The server and the rest of the network route still affect ping. |
| Convenience | Requires a cable route and compatible Ethernet ports on the device and router or switch. | Avoids running a cable to the gaming device, but depends on where the router is and the conditions between it and the device. |
| Common wired cable types | Intel identifies Cat 5e and Cat 6 as common consumer Ethernet cable types. For a gigabit link, the router port must also support gigabit. | Not applicable. |
The table describes typical trade-offs, not a measured ping prediction for your home. HP says Wi-Fi is usually adequate for casual gaming, particularly with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E routers, but that does not remove the effects of signal quality or local conditions. A Wi-Fi standard or router feature is not a substitute for a good connection between the device and access point.
For a player choosing between the two, the main advantage of Ethernet is predictability: the local link does not depend on the wireless signal reaching the device. Wi-Fi’s main practical advantage is convenience, since it avoids routing a cable across a room or through a home. Neither choice determines every part of game performance. A strong, stable Wi-Fi connection can be perfectly adequate, while a wired connection can still show high server ping if the remaining route is responsible.
How to tell whether Wi-Fi is your problem
Look for a pattern rather than assuming that a high game ping is caused by Wi-Fi. If the connection becomes unstable when the device is farther from the router, behind obstructions, or while other devices are using the network, the wireless segment is a plausible factor. If possible, connect by Ethernet and compare the same game under similar conditions.
- Ping spikes or inconsistent play on Wi-Fi: Ethernet is a useful test because it removes wireless signal conditions from the device-to-router link.
- Stable play on Wi-Fi: There may be no practical reason to run a cable solely for gaming. A strong Wi-Fi setup can be adequate.
- No meaningful change on Ethernet: The issue may lie beyond Wi-Fi, such as with the router, the internet provider’s route or the game/server conditions.
- Good download speed but poor responsiveness: Do not treat headline download speed as proof of low or stable latency. Speed and ping describe different aspects of a connection.
When comparing, keep the game and server conditions as similar as you can. A different server or a changing network load can make a before-and-after comparison misleading; the available sources do not specify a universal test protocol or a guaranteed improvement.
Try to interpret the comparison in terms of consistency as well as the single ping number displayed by a game. If the number is similar but play seems less erratic over Ethernet, that may still be a useful change. Conversely, if the displayed number drops during one test, that alone does not prove the cable caused the difference; server choice and other network conditions can change too. The point of the test is to see whether removing Wi-Fi appears to address the symptoms you noticed, not to produce a guaranteed benchmark.

Make one change at a time where practical. If you switch to Ethernet and also move the router, stop other household network use and join a different server, you will not know which change coincided with any improvement. A like-for-like comparison is more informative: use the same device and game, and keep the connection and server conditions as similar as you reasonably can. This is a practical comparison, not a formal test with a universal duration or required measurement method.

- Check for Ethernet ports. Confirm that the gaming device and router—or a switch connected to the router—have compatible Ethernet ports.
- Use a suitable cable. Cat 5e and Cat 6 are common consumer choices identified by Intel. If you want a gigabit link, confirm that the router port supports gigabit as well; a cable alone cannot make an unsupported port operate at that speed.
- Connect the device to the router or switch. Use a cable long enough for a safe, practical route. Avoid assuming that a more expensive cable or a higher category will, by itself, reduce game-server ping.
- Play under comparable conditions. Check whether the spikes or instability you noticed on Wi-Fi persist after switching to Ethernet. Focus on consistency as well as the displayed ping.
- Use the result to choose the next step. If Ethernet helps, the local wireless link was likely contributing. If the problem remains, investigate the router, internet-provider route or game/server conditions rather than buying a different cable category or assuming a gaming router will fix it.
These steps do not require buying the newest equipment. A suitable Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable is the direct way to test a wired link if the device and router have Ethernet ports and you can route the cable. Choose a length that reaches comfortably without creating an impractical route. The useful purchase is the cable that fits the setup; premium branding or a higher category is not evidence that the game-server ping will be lower.
Check the port requirement rather than judging the link by the cable name alone. Intel notes that the router port must support gigabit for a gigabit connection. The device and other network equipment also need compatible Ethernet ports for the intended connection. If a port does not support the target link speed, swapping to a more expensive cable does not change that limitation.
After connecting, consider what the result actually tells you. A steadier connection suggests that the local wireless environment was part of the problem. If both ping and play remain essentially unchanged, that points away from Wi-Fi as the main cause, though it does not identify exactly which other part of the route is responsible. In that case, the next investigation is the router, internet-provider route or game/server conditions—not an automatic upgrade to a higher cable category.
If you keep gaming on Wi-Fi
Check the parts of the wireless setup that can affect the device-to-router link. Nexon identifies signal strength, distance, obstructions, nearby access points, Bluetooth and the number of devices using the same network or channel as possible interference or shared-use concerns. Intel recommends reducing the number of devices using the network while gaming to give the connection more available resources.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Try to improve the signal between the gaming device and router by considering distance and obstructions.
- Notice whether nearby access points, Bluetooth devices or other active devices coincide with connection problems.
- Reduce competing network use during play where practical, then see whether stability changes.
- Do not assume a new router is the answer. RTINGS cautions that buying the newest gaming router alone is unlikely to fix ping.
These checks target possible local wireless issues; they cannot guarantee a lower ping if the delay is elsewhere in the route to the game server. If Wi-Fi is stable in the place where you play, you may not need to change it. If the signal or shared-use conditions appear to coincide with problems, adjust one factor at a time and see whether that specific change makes play more consistent.

Signal strength and network use are related but distinct considerations. Distance and obstructions affect the wireless path between the device and router. Other active devices and nearby wireless sources may add shared-use or interference concerns. A strong signal indicator by itself does not establish that every source of latency is absent, just as a fast download result does not establish that game latency is stable. Use the symptoms and a wired comparison, if available, rather than treating any single indicator as a complete diagnosis.
Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E may be part of a suitable home setup, and HP notes that Wi-Fi is usually adequate for casual gaming, especially with these routers. That is not a promise that every room, device, game or household network will behave identically. The deciding issue for a particular player remains the quality and consistency of the local link and the rest of the route to the server.
When a cable is impractical
HP lists powerline and MoCA adapters as alternatives that may provide a more stable connection than standard Wi-Fi when routing Ethernet directly is impractical. They are setup-dependent options, not guaranteed upgrades: whether they help depends on the home wiring and equipment. If you try one, compare its gaming stability with your existing Wi-Fi rather than assuming that an adapter will improve it.
These options are worth considering only as alternatives for a difficult cable route, not as guaranteed substitutes that work better in every home. Their suitability depends on the wiring and equipment in that home. The same diagnostic principle applies: test the resulting connection and judge whether the spikes or instability improve. If an adapter does not make the connection more consistent, it has not solved the issue simply by replacing the Wi-Fi link.
Where possible, consider the direct Ethernet test first because it clearly removes wireless conditions from the device-to-router segment. If that is impractical, powerline or MoCA may be a way to explore a more stable local connection, but the outcome is home-specific. Do not buy either on the assumption that the product name or category guarantees lower game-server ping.
What not to infer from speed tests or equipment upgrades
A high download-speed result does not establish that your connection has stable latency during a game. If the problem is responsiveness, look for latency spikes and instability rather than using download speed alone as the deciding measure.

Likewise, a new gaming router is not a guaranteed fix, and a premium cable or higher cable category does not automatically improve the route to a remote server. Start with the local connection: test Ethernet if you suspect Wi-Fi, check that the relevant ports support the link speed you need, and use the result to decide whether the problem is likely local or farther along the connection.

It is also important not to turn a general comparison into a personal guarantee. RTINGS describes Ethernet as consistently lower and more stable in its comparison, but that does not mean every player will see the same displayed ping change or that Ethernet can correct a distant server or provider-route issue. The sources do not provide a single controlled number that can responsibly be applied to every household. Be wary of advice that promises a fixed millisecond reduction without accounting for the local signal, route and server.
Equipment changes are most useful when they address a diagnosed limitation. A cable is relevant if the wireless local link is contributing and the ports and cable route make Ethernet feasible. A router upgrade on its own is not a reliable cure for ping, and neither a pricier cable nor an adapter can guarantee that the remaining route to a remote game server will improve. First determine whether the problem changes when the local connection changes.

Which is better for online gaming, Ethernet or Wi-Fi?
Ethernet is usually the more predictable choice for the local connection between your device and router because it avoids wireless signal conditions and shared-channel interference. Wi-Fi can still be adequate when the signal and local conditions are good. Which is better for you depends on whether Wi-Fi is contributing to spikes or instability in your setup.
Can Wi-Fi give me lower ping than Ethernet?
It can show a lower ping in a particular comparison, since game-server ping depends on the whole route, server location and changing network conditions—not only the local link. Ethernet is generally the more consistent local connection, but it does not guarantee a lower server ping in every test.
How many milliseconds will Ethernet save?
There is no broadly applicable number that can be promised to every gamer. The difference depends on the Wi-Fi signal, home network, internet-provider route and game server. Compare your own connection under similar conditions instead of relying on a universal millisecond estimate.

Is Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E good enough for gaming?
HP says Wi-Fi is usually adequate for casual gaming, especially with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E routers. A router standard does not guarantee a particular result, however; signal strength, obstructions, shared use and the route to the game server still matter.
Will a faster internet plan or download speed lower my ping?
A high download-speed result does not prove that latency is low or stable. Download speed and ping describe different aspects of a connection. If the issue is responsiveness, focus on latency spikes and stability rather than using headline speed as the sole test.
Which Ethernet cable should I buy for gaming?
Intel identifies Cat 5e and Cat 6 as common consumer Ethernet cable types. Choose a practical length and check that the device and router or switch have compatible ports. For a gigabit link, the router port also needs gigabit capability. A premium brand or higher category does not automatically lower game-server ping.

Not necessarily. RTINGS cautions that buying the newest gaming router alone is unlikely to fix ping. First test whether the local Wi-Fi link is the problem; if the issue persists on Ethernet, the router, provider route or game/server conditions may need attention.
What can I use if I cannot run Ethernet to my gaming device?
HP lists powerline and MoCA adapters as possible alternatives that may provide a more stable connection than standard Wi-Fi. Their results depend on the home wiring and equipment, so they are not guaranteed improvements. Compare the resulting stability with your existing Wi-Fi.
What should I check if Ethernet does not improve my gaming ping?
If the problem persists on a direct wired connection, do not assume another cable category will solve it. Investigate the router, internet-provider route or game/server conditions. Ethernet removes Wi-Fi from the local device-to-router segment, but it cannot control the rest of the route.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Ethernet is usually the steadier local connection for online gaming, especially if Wi-Fi is producing spikes or instability. It cannot guarantee lower ping to a remote server, and Wi-Fi can be adequate when the signal and local conditions are good. If you can, test a compatible Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable under comparable conditions before spending on new networking equipment; if the problem remains on Ethernet, look beyond Wi-Fi.
