For a typical four-pair unshielded Ethernet cable (UTP) in a completed, unloaded run, use a minimum bend radius of four times the cable’s outside diameter as a baseline. That is the radius—not the full width across the bend. A cable with a 6 mm outside diameter therefore needs about a 24 mm radius, or roughly 48 mm across the curve. The applicable value can differ for other cable constructions and installation conditions, so check the current standard and the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact cable.
What bend radius means
Bend radius is measured from the center of the curve to the cable’s centerline. It is not the distance across the whole curved section. For example, if a product’s data sheet lists a 6 mm outside diameter and its applicable multiplier is 4, calculate 6 mm × 4 = 24 mm minimum radius. The bend’s approximate diameter is 48 mm.

Use the cable’s actual outside diameter rather than assuming one from its category name. Cable designs vary, including within a category; the product data sheet is the right place to find its dimensions and bend guidance.

The often-cited four-times figure comes from an older TIA/EIA-568-B.1 excerpt and applies to four-pair UTP cable at rest, without pulling tension. It is a useful baseline, not a universal current rule for every Ethernet cable. That excerpt gives different guidance for other constructions and cable uses:

The figures above are from a historical edition of TIA/EIA-568-B.1, published approximately 25 years before the October 2026 date of this article. Check the current applicable standard and the cable maker’s data sheet before treating a value as a requirement for a particular installation.
How to work out the minimum for your cable
- Identify the cable. Check whether it is UTP or screened, whether it is horizontal cable or multipair backbone, and whether it is permanent cable or a patch cord.
- Find its outside diameter. Use the exact product’s data sheet, not a generic diameter for Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6A, or another category.
- Find the applicable multiplier. Use the manufacturer’s installation instructions or the current standard for that cable and condition. For four-pair UTP at rest, the older TIA excerpt gives a baseline multiplier of 4.
- Calculate and measure the radius. Multiply outside diameter by the applicable multiplier. Check the distance from the center of the bend to the cable centerline; double the radius only if you need the approximate width across the curve.
Why pulling, ties, and supports matter
Pulling tension changes the installation condition
A cable being pulled is under tensile load, unlike one resting in its completed route. Do not assume the at-rest bend radius is suitable during installation. Follow the cable maker’s pulling and installation instructions for the exact product rather than applying an unverified universal pulling multiplier.

Keep the cable round and unstressed
The cited TIA excerpt advises minimizing cable stress, including in suspended runs and tightly cinched bundles. Keep ties loose enough to slide around the bundle, and avoid deforming the cable sheath. A sharp fold, kink, crushed section, or tight tie is a reason to treat the cable as potentially damaged—not proof by itself that a link has failed.

A J-hook or other cable support can help maintain a broad turn, but it must be sized for the actual cable or bundle and route. nVent’s reference explains the calculation as outside diameter multiplied by a cable multiplier and discusses supports in this context; it is manufacturer guidance, not a replacement for the cable’s data sheet or applicable standard: nVent’s cable bend-radius reference.

What to do if a cable has been bent too tightly
- Inspect for a visible kink, sharp fold, crushing, or a tie that has flattened the sheath.
- Remove the cause of the deformation and reroute the cable with a gentler curve, following the product’s installation guidance.
- Do not assume that bending a kinked cable back restores its internal structure or performance.
- For a consequential permanent link or suspected cable damage, visual inspection alone does not certify performance. A qualified technician may need to test the installed link with appropriate field-certification equipment.
Where to check product-specific guidance
Manufacturer documentation is especially important for patch cords and unusual cable constructions. For a permanent installation, match the instructions to the precise cable model and the installation condition rather than relying on a category label or a general rule of thumb.
