Whether you can recover an Ethereum wallet depends on who controls it and what recovery credentials you still have. A self-custody wallet may be restored in a compatible app with its recovery phrase; if both the phrase and private keys are gone, there is no Ethereum authority that can reset access. For an exchange account, contact the exchange. Never give a recovery phrase or private key to someone claiming they can help.
First, identify what kind of access you lost
“Wallet recovery” can mean different things. Losing a phone or forgetting an app password is not the same as losing the credentials that control a self-custody wallet. An exchange account is different again: the exchange controls access to its platform account.

How to restore a self-custody wallet with a phrase
- Confirm which wallet app and account type you used. A phrase may restore accounts according to that wallet’s own derivation and restore behavior.
- Open the wallet provider’s official restore instructions and follow its steps in the app. Do not enter the phrase into a website or form reached through a message or search ad.
- Check whether every account you used has been restored. Some wallets handle imported accounts or hardware-wallet accounts separately; a phrase may not be a backup for those keys. Use the documentation for the exact wallet and account type rather than assuming that every app restores accounts in the same way.
What if the phrase or private keys are gone?
For a self-custody wallet, the phrase or private key is what enables control. If both have been lost, ethereum.org says there is no recovery service or central authority that can reset access: “Without your seed phrase or private keys, your funds cannot be recovered.” ethereum.org FAQ

A lost device or forgotten app password may still be solvable if you have the wallet’s recovery credentials or a valid backup. A lost phrase with no separate key backup is a fundamentally different problem. A hardware wallet keeps keys offline, but it does not recreate a missing recovery phrase.
Can friends or guardians recover a wallet?
Not by default. “Guardian” or “social recovery” features depend on the specific smart-contract account and wallet implementation; they are not a universal Ethereum-network reset mechanism.

What ERC-7093 proposes
ERC-7093 is a draft proposal for an interface for social recovery of smart-contract accounts. It describes configurable recovery policies and guardian types, with identity and policy verification separated from the recovery process. A draft standard does not establish that a particular wallet supports it. Check the documentation for the exact account and wallet before relying on guardians. ERC-7093
Vendor-specific guardian behavior

How to protect a recovery backup
- Keep the phrase private. Anyone who gets it can access the accounts and assets it controls. ethereum.org warns: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” ethereum.org security guide
- Reject requests for credentials or fees. Do not give a phrase or key to a support agent, recovery service, website, or person who contacts you. ethereum.org says it will not contact users and warns against impersonators seeking credentials, ETH, or recovery fees. ethereum.org community guidance
- Do not photograph or screenshot the phrase. Images may sync to a cloud provider, creating another place from which the phrase could be exposed. ethereum.org security guide
- Understand what a hardware wallet does. Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets as a way to keep private keys offline and names Ledger and Trezor as examples. - Make sure the backup matches the account. Imported accounts and keys associated with hardware wallets may require separate backup steps, depending on the wallet.
Is there an Ethereum support team that can reset a wallet?
No central Ethereum support desk can reset a self-custody wallet. ethereum.org is a community-run educational resource, not a custodian or an account-recovery help desk. For a self-custody wallet, follow the wallet provider’s documented restore process; for an exchange account, use the exchange’s official support channel.
