Start by identifying which Wowza product you use: Wowza Video is a hosted cloud service, while Wowza Streaming Engine is a media server you install or run in a Docker setup. The video that helps you get your first stream running depends on that choice. For a straightforward OBS-to-Wowza Video stream, begin with Wowza’s newer RTMP quick start. For Streaming Engine, use the current trial guide to choose a source and deployment path.
Choose the right Wowza tutorial first
These are different workflows, not two names for the same setup. Wowza Video accepts a live source, processes it in the cloud, and can provide a hosted playback page. Streaming Engine is a media server: you install or deploy it, publish a source to an application, and configure a playback path.

| Question | Wowza Video | Wowza Streaming Engine |
|---|---|---|
| What are you setting up? | A hosted cloud stream and playback workflow. | A self-managed media-server workflow. |
| Where should you start? | RTMP live-stream quick start. | Streaming Engine trial options and the getting-started documentation index. |
| What happens to playback? | The workflow can include a Wowza-hosted playback page. | You test playback through a separately configured path. |
| What can provide the live source? | The basic path here uses OBS over RTMP. | Depending on the trial path, OBS, FFmpeg, a simulated stream, or webcam over WebRTC. |
This is a workflow comparison, not a performance test. If you are unsure which product your account includes, check its current interface or documentation before following a tutorial.
Best video path for a first Wowza Video stream
Use the 2025-02-24 RTMP quick start for the current documented OBS-to-Wowza Video sequence. Wowza’s separate getting-started guide is labeled Legacy and was updated 2024-02-08; it is useful for the overall flow and hosted playback page, but interface labels or hostnames may no longer match your account. If the screen differs, follow the current account interface and quick start rather than assuming an older screenshot is current.

- Sign in and create a live stream. In Wowza Video, create a live stream and choose the RTMP input workflow described in the quick-start guide.
- Copy the connection details Wowza generates. Keep the server address, stream name or key, and any source authentication credentials available. These are the values OBS needs; they are not interchangeable with your Wowza account password.
- Configure OBS as the encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose a custom streaming service, and enter the Wowza server and stream name/key supplied for that stream. Enter the source credentials as directed by Wowza. Do not publish stream keys or credentials in a recording or public post.
- Start the Wowza stream, then OBS. The Wowza guide’s sequence is to start the stream in Wowza before selecting Start Streaming in OBS. Starting the encoder first can leave you unsure whether Wowza is ready to receive its input.
- Check the incoming preview and playback page. Confirm that Wowza receives the source, then test the hosted playback page. A successful OBS connection alone does not prove that the viewing path is working.
- Stop the stream when finished. Stop the live stream in Wowza Video after the event. The Legacy guide warns that transcoding charges can accrue for started streams even when no input is active. Its statement that idle streams stop automatically after 20 minutes is from that 2024 guide; verify current billing and idle-stream behavior in your account documentation rather than relying on it as a current guarantee.
OBS is the source encoder, not the Wowza service. In a 2025-11-12 developer walkthrough, Wowza author Don Kianian calls OBS “a free and open-source video recording and live-streaming software.” The walkthrough, Setting Up Your First Live Stream with Wowza Streaming Engine, is aimed at Engine and a developer-oriented local setup, not a substitute for the hosted Video quick start.
Pick a first-stream route for Wowza Streaming Engine
Wowza’s Streaming Engine trial page offers several ways to supply a source. Choose one based on what you already have and whether you want a local developer setup.

- FFmpeg: Choose this if you have a media file or want an encoder-oriented command-line route; follow Wowza’s linked trial instructions rather than guessing a publish URL or options.
- Simulated stream: Choose this to test a stream path without setting up a camera or live production.
- Webcam over WebRTC: Choose this if you want to test with a webcam and browser-based source workflow.
The current trial route includes Docker Compose. Follow Wowza’s Docker Compose deployment instructions for the required deployment and source-specific steps. A local Docker proof of concept that combines Engine with Flowplayer is also covered in the 2025-11-12 developer walkthrough; it is a more specialized route than simply testing an incoming stream.

Install and connectivity checks
If you are installing Engine rather than using the Docker trial, use Wowza’s install and configure guide. It was updated 2026-07-24; system requirements and supported versions can change, so check the current requirements for your operating system before installing. That page notes that version 4.9.5 added support for ARM-based Linux executables.

It also supports stream pushing at least 4 addresses.
- Multiple Applications - Applicable not only for basic CCTV surveillance, NVR, recording system, but also for live broadcasting like IPTV, video conference, video game, telemedicine, remote teaching, major events, WeMedia etc. With HLS(H.264 Only), you can also view live video on your smartphone, iPad directly with picture in picture.

- Recording & Download - Pretty easy to record real-time videos if you'd like to save them into the inserted USB flash drive(128G) in MP4, just pressing the reset/record button for one second. Just press it again and it will stop recording. Easy to preview and download the recorded videos by accessing the encoder.
- Confirm the server meets the current operating-system and system requirements for the deployment you chose.
- Check that the firewall and network allow the ports required by the chosen publishing and playback protocols.
- Use the server address, application, stream name, and credentials specified for your Engine configuration; a wrong URL or name can prevent the source from appearing.
- For RTMP and RTSP sources, plan to provide source username and password. Wowza’s live-source connection documentation, updated 2026-09-17, says source authentication is enabled by default.
Verify the source and playback
- Publish from the selected source method using the application and stream details for your Engine setup.
- Open Engine Manager and confirm that the expected live source appears. Wowza’s live-source connection guide covers connecting a publisher; its Manager basics tutorial can help orient you, but it dates from 2020-02-06, so treat interface details as potentially old.
- Test playback using the playback method configured for your application. Engine receiving a source and a player successfully playing it are separate checks.
Troubleshoot the first connection
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not connect to Wowza Video. | Server address, stream name/key, source credentials, and whether the Wowza live stream is started. | Copy the generated connection details again, enter them in OBS’s custom server settings, and follow the quick-start order: start Wowza, then OBS. |
| Engine does not show an incoming source. | Server URL, application and stream name, network/firewall access, and source authentication. | Compare each value with the Engine setup and source guide. For RTMP or RTSP, supply the source username and password if prompted; authentication is enabled by default. |
| The source appears, but video does not play. | Whether the playback path is configured and whether you are testing the correct playback endpoint or page. | Test playback separately from source publishing, following the playback method for Wowza Video or the Engine application you configured. |
| A tutorial’s buttons or hostname do not match. | Whether the guide is the Legacy Wowza Video article or an older Engine Manager walkthrough. | Prefer the newer RTMP quick start for Wowza Video and current account UI; use current Engine docs for version- and deployment-specific steps. |
Optional gear: only if you choose the webcam route
A USB webcam for live streaming is relevant only if you select the webcam/WebRTC path for Streaming Engine. It is not required to follow every beginner route: the Docker trial also offers a simulated stream, and other documented options include OBS and FFmpeg. Check the chosen trial instructions for compatibility before buying hardware.

If your goal is specifically to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from Wowza: it loops uploaded recordings or playlists to YouTube, rather than taking a live camera feed. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. After that, the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
