There is no one best encoding preset for every live stream. Start with the destination’s current ingest requirements, then choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your upload connection and encoder can sustain reliably. For YouTube, a practical H.264 starting point is 12 Mbps for 1080p60 or 10 Mbps for 1080p30; Twitch’s cited 1080p60 example is 6,000 kbps. These are platform-specific recommendations, not interchangeable presets.
Recommended starting settings for YouTube and Twitch
Use the target platform’s current encoder guidance for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec you plan to send. The figures below are the examples in official guidance checked on October 3, 2026; they are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or computer will sustain the stream.

Do not apply Twitch’s figures to YouTube: at 1080p60, the cited YouTube H.264 recommendation is 12 Mbps while Twitch’s example is 6,000 kbps. YouTube’s table has different entries for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs, so match the row to the actual ingest format rather than extrapolating from 1080p.

How to choose a bitrate and quality target
1. Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
Check your outbound upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total bitrate; if you send primary and backup streams, include both in that total. A speed result alone does not guarantee stability when the connection is shared or fluctuates. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

2. Match resolution and frame rate to what you can sustain
Higher resolutions require more bitrate, and higher frame rates require more encoding work. If the upload or computer cannot hold the target steadily, lower resolution or frame rate rather than forcing a high-quality setting that causes network limits or dropped frames. Twitch’s guidance explicitly prioritizes stream stability over pushing quality past what the connection can handle.
3. Choose the encoder for your computer
x264 uses the CPU and can place substantial load on it. GPU encoding such as NVENC uses a dedicated GPU encoder, which may suit a system whose CPU is already busy. Twitch suggests beginning with x264 “veryfast” when using x264, then adjusting to the computer’s capacity; this is a starting point, not a universal best setting. Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines

4. Test with realistic content
Before a scheduled stream, test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast. Check the preview and monitor stream health and platform messages during the test and the event. YouTube recommends testing and watching stream health rather than assuming that a preset works simply because it matches a published table. YouTube live encoder settings

Which settings matter in an encoder?
- Destination and ingest protocol: Set the destination’s specified ingest method. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; verify the current documentation for any other service.
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for its live ingest guidance. The Twitch examples here are H.264-oriented. Codec support and required settings vary by destination.
- Rate control: CBR is part of the cited YouTube and Twitch recommendations.
- Keyframe interval: Two seconds is the recommendation in both sources; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Select a combination in the destination’s current table, then check that your upload and encoder can sustain it.
- Bitrate: Use the table entry for that exact platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not assume the same bitrate applies to different platforms.
Troubleshooting unstable or poor-quality streams
- Stream drops or network warnings: Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, and check whether other devices or applications are using the connection. Recheck outbound capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over total stream bitrate.
- Dropped frames while the connection is otherwise stable: The encoder or computer may be overloaded. Reduce the encoding workload or output target; if using x264, test whether the CPU is the limiting resource, or consider a supported GPU encoder if available.
- Choppy or unexpectedly soft video: Confirm that the selected bitrate matches the destination’s recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec. Test with movement similar to the live content; a static test image is not representative of fast motion.
- Platform reports a configuration problem: Recheck codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and the selected ingest row against the destination’s current documentation. The settings are platform-specific and may change.
- Preview looks fine but the live event struggles: Repeat testing under representative conditions and monitor stream health and platform messages during the actual event. Shared or fluctuating upload can behave differently from a short test.
