To judge whether a game fits your child, check the rating and content details for the exact title and regional release, then consider online features, purchases, platform controls and your family’s rules. A label is useful guidance, not a guarantee that a game will suit every child.
How ESRB and PEGI differ
The systems use different age categories and are applied in different markets. A game can receive different ratings for different regional releases, so comparing the printed numbers as if they were equivalent can mislead.

| System | Where it is used | Age categories | What else to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESRB | United States and Canada | E (Everyone), E10+ (Everyone 10+), T (Teen), M (Mature 17+), AO (Adults Only 18+) | Content descriptors and, where applicable, Interactive Elements |
| PEGI | Europe | PEGI 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18 | Content descriptors and additional consumer information on the game page |
PEGI’s age labels indicate age suitability, not how difficult a game is or what skills it requires. ESRB categories are accompanied by content descriptors that identify elements such as violence or language. Consult the official entry for the exact game rather than relying on a category name alone.
What the descriptors and notices tell you
ESRB content descriptors
Content descriptors explain the kinds of material that contributed to a game’s rating. Read them alongside the age category: the category gives a broad age-based signal, while descriptors help you identify particular content that matters to your family.

ESRB Interactive Elements
Interactive Elements flag online or interactive features that may be relevant to parents, including communication and purchases. They are separate from content descriptors and do not determine the rating category. ESRB puts it this way: “Interactive Elements highlight interactive or online features that may be of interest or concern but do not influence the rating assignment of a product.”
PEGI descriptors and purchase information
PEGI descriptors explain why an age category was assigned. A PEGI game page may also provide additional consumer information about purchases. Check the individual listing for details rather than assuming that every store page presents the same information.

How games receive ratings
The organizations describe different procedures, and digital storefront ratings may use a separate route from physical releases.

- ESRB digital games: ESRB describes ratings based on questionnaires through the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC).
- PEGI: Publishers complete a content questionnaire to receive a provisional rating, followed by administrative review. IARC supports ratings for digital storefronts.
These process descriptions help explain how a label is assigned; they do not establish that one system is universally stricter than the other. There is no reliable general conversion between their categories or a basis here for declaring one system more restrictive based only on its printed numerals.

A practical check before a child plays
- Identify the market and system. Look at the game packaging or storefront to see whether the displayed rating is ESRB or PEGI. A different regional release may carry a different rating.
- Read the age category and every descriptor. Use the category as a starting point, then check the details behind it. Do not treat an ESRB number as the equivalent of a PEGI number.
- Check communication and purchases. Review ESRB Interactive Elements or the additional consumer information available on the PEGI game page, especially if chat or spending matters for your child.
- Find the exact listing if anything is unclear. Search the official ESRB or PEGI rating database for the game title and platform; do not assume a listing for another release is identical.
- Set the platform rules that fit your family. Consider limits for game access, online interaction, spending, browsing and play time, then make the decision in light of the child’s maturity and your household rules.
Use parental controls alongside ratings
Ratings describe a game; platform controls can help manage how and when a child uses it. PEGI describes controls for access by age rating, online interaction, spending, browsing and time. ESRB also offers parent tools. The available settings and their names depend on the platform, so check its current parental-control menus and set the limits that address your concerns.

ESRB reported assigning more than 6,500 ratings in 2025 to physical and console-downloadable games. Of those ratings, 52% were E, 15% E10+, 23% T and 10% M. ESRB also framed 90% as appropriate for a 13-year-old; that is the organization’s characterization of its ratings, not a recommendation for every individual child.
On its parent-tools page, ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console-downloadable games in 2024 were E or E10+. These figures describe ESRB-rated releases in the stated scope and years; they should not be read as estimates of all games, all platforms or what all families consider appropriate.
