To make a 360-degree recording work as an ordinary social video, capture the full scene, then reframe it into a flat clip with the subject and viewing direction you want. Use a flat export when viewers should watch without panning; export a 360 video when the destination supports interactive panoramic playback and that experience is part of your plan.
What reframing changes
A 360 camera records a complete spherical view. Reframing is the editing step where you choose which direction, perspective, field of view, and moment the viewer sees in a conventional flat video. Instead of committing to one fixed camera angle while filming, you can steer the view afterward.

That flexibility is not a guarantee that every moment can be rescued: important action still needs to fall within the camera’s capture area, and the edit needs usable footage around the moment you want to show.
How to shoot footage that is easier to reframe
Record a 360 source
Use a compatible 360 camera and capture the complete scene rather than aiming only at one direction. Keep important action within the camera’s capture area, and leave some footage before and after key moments so there is room to set the view and its timing in the edit.

Aspect-ratio flexibility depends on the camera and recording mode. Insta360’s app support information says FreeFrame footage supports ratio changes for listed model-and-mode combinations, while Video and Loop Recording clips retain their original ratio on export. Check the exact device and mode before recording if you expect to change the crop later.
Choose a flat clip or an interactive 360 export
| Output | What the viewer sees | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Flat reframed video | A conventional rectangular frame with a selected direction and field of view. | The intended experience is ordinary social playback, without asking viewers to pan around the scene. |
| 360 video | A panoramic scene the viewer can look around, if the destination supports interactive playback. | The ability to explore the surroundings is part of the intended experience and the destination supports it. |
Insta360’s sharing guidance says the final display depends on platform support. Its ONE X2 tutorial uses Instagram as an example of a destination for a flat reframed export rather than the full sphere; treat that as maker guidance, not a guarantee of every platform’s current behavior. Check the current support and upload behavior for your destination before exporting.

A 360 file may look like a flat equirectangular projection in a phone’s ordinary photo viewer. That does not mean the file has stopped being panoramic; the local viewer may simply not provide interactive playback.

Mobile app
Insta360 documents reframing in its mobile app. The guide describes choosing views manually, using app tools, and using AI-assisted options. Automated reframing may help select a view, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of perfect subject tracking; check the result and adjust it where needed.

Desktop Studio project
Insta360 Studio offers a project workflow for supported footage, including project aspect-ratio selection, reorientation, and export presets. Its documented Studio project workflow requires version 5.6.1 or later; verify the current supported release and model compatibility before following the steps, since software changes over time.
The mobile and desktop approaches are documented options, not a tested speed or quality ranking. Choose based on where you prefer to edit and how much control you want over the project.

Set the frame and guide its movement
Choose a shape for the placement
Insta360’s guide offers these illustrative starting ratios: 9:16 vertical for TikTok or Instagram Stories, 16:9 horizontal for a standard YouTube player, and 1:1 square for Instagram or Facebook posts. Platform specifications and placements can change, so confirm the destination’s current requirements and intended crop before exporting.

A wider view keeps more of the surroundings in frame; a tighter view puts more emphasis on the subject while showing less of the captured sphere. There is no universal image-quality result established for different crops, so judge the framing on the footage and output you intend to publish.

Use keyframes to move the view
Keyframes let you set the viewing direction at different points in time, so the flat clip can follow action through a scene. In Studio’s Project page, choose a flat aspect ratio for keyframing. Insta360 says Project-page keyframes do not affect a 360 export: that output preserves the continuous panoramic view rather than applying the selected flat camera path.
Studio’s Reorient control is documented as letting you drag the view to adjust the horizontal angle and place the subject in the center. Set the view at the moments that matter, then review the transition between them so the movement feels intentional rather than abrupt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Export and check the result
- Choose the output experience. Select a flat reframed video for conventional playback, or a 360 export if interactive viewing is supported and wanted.
- Set the aspect ratio. Match the destination placement using its current specifications, rather than assuming an example ratio is an upload guarantee.
- Review the view over time. Check that keyframes keep important action visible and that the camera movement between them makes sense.
- Export and test the file in its intended destination. If a panoramic export appears flat in a local photo viewer, try a viewer or platform that supports interactive 360 playback.
Insta360’s Studio export guide includes platform-oriented presets, and its app sharing instructions describe YouTube and Facebook workflows with device and media-type caveats. Availability and platform behavior can change; check the current instructions for your model, file type, and destination before publishing.

Common problems to check
- You cannot change the crop on export: confirm the recording mode and model. Video and Loop Recording clips retain their original aspect ratio in the app workflow described by Insta360; FreeFrame ratio changes apply only to listed combinations.
- Keyframes do not change a 360 export: this is expected for Studio Project-page keyframes. Use a flat project aspect ratio when you want a keyframed conventional clip.
- A 360 file looks like a stretched panorama: the app or photo viewer may show the equirectangular projection instead of interactive playback. Check the file in a destination or viewer that supports 360 video.
- The social upload shows the wrong crop or experience: verify the destination’s current placement requirements and whether it supports panoramic playback; platform behavior is not guaranteed by an export preset.
